Once again Ash we see you demonstrating that locksport isn't just picking. I'm sure this presentation will energize a lot of people and, hopefully, encourage more people to get into the sport. Nice job as always.
Very Nice! I have tried everything but the 3-D printing, casting, and the lock-centric jewelry. What I love about this hobby, is that all it really takes is a small vice, some readily available hand tools, and a desk sized workspace with good light. Oh, and a couple of old chests of drawers to to store all the stuff you are going to wind up collecting over the next year.
My Favourite Mod: Purchase some 1/4 ID Thick Walled Brass Tubing from a hobby shop. This is done with full or part picks. Gently tap the length of the pipe to begin crushing it into an oval until you can slip a pick handle into the tubing. Hold the pick in place while you continue gently deforming the tubing with a hammer. When the tubing has grabbed onto the pick you can begin smashing the hell out of it. Once you have good shape you can start the sanding and polishing. Looks fantastic! The down sides are a heavy handle with somewhat muted feedback and you have to chuck the handle when you break the pick. Still, the look is incredible once you buff to a full shine. I used a set of Sparrows Euro hooks as they are quite strong and thick. You can also use cheap Chinese picks with plastic handles. Heat the pick and the plastic handle will slide off when it starts melting. Do not overheat the metal, like red hot, or you will change the metal characteristics and probably end up with Martensite picks. Crumbly!
Amen! I made a few of my own lockpicks with windshield whipper blades and a drimel tool. Made a city rake, snake rake and single hook. Your imagination is limitless! Love the vid
as you mentioned "Tool Modification" especially of tools that were never intended to be used on locks ... I had to think of my last tool ... I took a 40mm stainless steel spatula (I bought actually another one, after having that Idea) and glued a printed shape of the sparrows mini jim on it ... it was a hard time for the grinder, but now I have a Jim with a pretty nice handle :)
Ive figured it out. He isn’t a lock picker. He’s a genius. Plain and simple. 😅 idc what anyof you say. His memory. His skill. His creativeness this dude is dead ass a genius.
Well done ash my friend. You covered a lot of the other amazing aspects of locksport. It's not all just picking locks if you want you can do loads more as you show. And congratulations on getting a video in Defcon 👏👏👏👏 stay safe mate cheers 👍🤟🖖🍻
the first broken pick (and the only one so far after six months ) was a peterson snakerake with blue handle I then turned into a keyring :) this is exactly why lock picking is so fun and relaxing and offers so much because there is so much more to do related to it than just picking a lock . you can make art out of broken lockpicks and locks and you can do so many nice creative things in it self it would take a lifetime. many good ideas offered here , great video :)
Thanks for a great video. This really highlights some of the great spin-off aspects of this great sport. I appreciate how you show it doesn't take a huge budget to get excellent results. Love it! Cheers!
Thanks for this one, Ash. 🙂👍 Many people likely discover different aspects of the hobby either accidentally, or through necessity. I made my first proper single purpose pick recently, by modifying a cheap Chinese dimple lock too because the pick I wanted wasn't easily available without buying a full set of picks. It does the job nicely. And as people say, you can never have too many levers.
I cannot afford things as I'm a stay at home dad with multiple sclerosis (nervous system disease) so unfortunately mm ah yes SCRATCH THAT .. FORTUNATELY I have watched your channel and now know how to make not only excellent lock picks and tools but also ones that mean allot to me, things my mom gave me long ago or even recently, I have turned into tools for lock picking and I love it. THANKS FOR THE KITCHEN KNIFE TIPS!!! It never crossed my mind and the handles are already made!
best material i've found for picks and tension wrenches is lawn mower return springs available at any hardware store in different widths and thicknesses.
I've been following other lock picker's channels for years now and only stumbled across this channel very recently. I gotta say i really enjoy your content! You put a whole different view on the hobby in a lot of ways. Explain things in a down to earth easy to follow manner. Happily subscribed, and thank you for all your videos!
Great video man. We are much alike. My dremal is my best friend haha I have dabbled in every single thing you have mentioned. Sure feels good to complete a working tool!
Awesome video mate, if this comprehensive video doesn’t inspire you to explore all the other directions in locksport….. nothing will! Great video well put together, cheers.
I've been thinking of making a key for a lever padlock that I got with no key. I have very few tools and I'm thinking I could use a CD case as the start of the key blank. It won't be the best, but you've encouraged me to give it a go. Thanks!
A perfect example of making your own lock picks is what LPL refers to as "The Pick That BosnianBill & I Made" I made my first pick by taping a bent bobby pin onto a broken file. I call it the BobbyFile.
There is one thing that I would add. Make new friends. Seriously, I'm involved in quite a few other hobbies, and *none* have been as welcoming as locksport.
Wonderful and inspiring video! Some of the things I've done but, there's lot's of things I'm planning on trying, thanks to this video! I've always liked watching your videos and you've moved up in my world to the level of Bosnia Bill and Lock Picking Lawyer!
Have got in to lock sport properly past few months nd loving all aspects of it nd agree making ur own things is great all ive done so far is tension wrenches challenge locks with grub screws at top, Shims nd today made a rack/stand to hold my picks nd wrenches so easy to see nd choose nd makes me picking table more space nd tidier lol Picks will be nxt as ive just broken my 1st pick bit gutted but then I thought make another so that's me nxt project so this is a great video t watch love ur videos have learnt alot from you so keep up the good work cheers
Yet another fantastic video. If I ask enough times, do you think I could eventually wear you down and talk you into sending me something you made? Lol. Keep these great videos coming brother.
I was always fascinated with lockpicking, but picks were never really accesible in my country. Now they are through webshops, but I'm a cheap bastards, so I made my first usable pick from a part of my wives stethoscope. Don't know what sort of steel it is, but it is flexible, yet not easily bendable, and sturdy enough to pick. I can't begin to describe how happy I am with myself and my pick
Very good video's covering all aspects of lock sport, This one one of many i found to be helpful the tips on damaging locks or rather how to avoid Damaging locks, I found Locksport Very Expensive but i have had many years and made a lot of tools myself, I agree i get a lot of satisfaction Not just the Money side, Mostly the money side, But i have had an obsession with Locks & Keys since i was 6--7 yrs old I picked my grandads lock on his Motorbike many times he eventually Caught me I used to undo the lock and put the chain round the wheel a few times and lock it and waited till he was off to work, He'd look at it as if to say "I didn't do that did I ?? . I did it one time and didn't see him sneaking up behind me and he CLAPPED his hands together so hard i jumped nearly knocking his Motorbike over he laughed about it but wasn't best pleased He bought one of them Combination Chunky Chains for Motorbikes and I got that open in a couple of minute's Figured out how to change Combination and he gave up.
Hi There, I have a Dremel and a few toys on order to give several of these activities a go in the near future, the only hold up at the moment Dremel Tools are unavailable in Australia at the moment hopefully at least the importer tells me they should be back in stock in the next 2 or 3 weeks, I can’t, wait most of these activities have fired my imagination and being recently retired I have the time available to indulge myself and keep busy. 🥴
As an electrician (retired) working in industrial jobs as well as commercial and residential, throughout the years I have made, modified, and invented many different tools to make my life easier. I have naturally adopted those skills to locksporting. And I have to pass on a.couple old cliches.... Nessecity is the mother of invention. You are only limited by your own imagination. But I have a request. Could you please make a video dedicated to finding sources for tools, part, and materials related to locksporting, such as a list of companies that sell picks, locksmith tools and other equipment like vices and key blanks, and raw materials. I myself have a fairly large group of "bookmarks" to sites where I can find what I want, but it took me years to accumulate this group, and when I started lock picking, I didn't have a clue where to find the stuff I needed.
Awesome video! I really found myself wishing for another video for EACH point, going into more detail and showing us better those things you made and mod. I do realize some of those parts are in your old videos. Would you be able to link any videos you have related to each part of this video?
Where would you say is a good way to find key in knob cylinders? a simple google showed everything to be rather expensive :( Edit: Amazing ideas, my word so many of my odd skills can merge and apply here, im dadgum excited for the future
Wow! Not only a skilled locksmith but a skilled craftsman and skilled artist as well! One of the best channels I have subscribed to.
Thank you 😊 happy picking

Great presentation Noob. That's awesome you got asked to do something for defcon. A real honor.
You gave me some ideas for my tool making.
Any time!

As a precision engineer this sport brings along so many subjects close to my heart. It’s like a closure.
that cross pendant made from a key @18:50 is REALLY cool.
Thank you!!
Fantastic Ash. Its all good for the soul. 👍
Thanks! 👍😊
Windshield Wiper Inserts, Street Sweeper Brush Tines, and Black Pallet Banding all make excellent tension and pick material.
Ok, the Celtics cross is seriously cool! But the rake ring really needs to be used as a secret membership perk for the lock tribe...

Perhaps covered under challenge locks, but I think lock design is a fascinating hobby for those of us with an engineering mindset.
I think you could call it a separate thing to a challenge lock depending on your POV :-)
