About 15 years ago I threw out an old IBM PS/2, along with what I now know was a model M keyboard. I just put it in a skip... Regret!

Oh no! I remember when I got my first Windows 95 machine and it had a rubber dome keyboard and I thought how great it was that it wasn't so clicky as all the other keyboards I was used to. Now I am back to using a bolt modded Model M from 1990. I've come full circle. lol

I worked for IBM starting in 1968 and have never owned any keyboard but the IBM Model M. I have typed on the new keyboards but dislike them a lot! Fortunately, I bought 5 of the Model M boards and have kept all 5 very clean and all still work great. I have tried the new mechanical boards that my three grandsons use for their gaming but they aren't like the old IBM boards.

I used to have a Model M keyboard..... it was stolen along with my 486 computer back in the early 90s. I really miss the actual spring click. I was more pissed, even back then, about my keyboard than anything else I lost on that computer.
Just got a Cherry MX Red and it turns out I think the Blue would have been closer to what I wanted.... Unfortunately as you have said there's nothing that compares to a Model M.

I've got my unicomp and love it. I think the closest you can get today are brown switches I guess. I do enjoy blues...but by comparison, they are just too rattley for me. No matter the price or the quality, blues feel like they rattle too much when pressing. I'd rather have a chunkier press that's a little more tight, and that's the part that I guess brown has the most similar with buckling spring.

I used the both and yeah the original IBM model M (in my memory) was very satisfaying but the Cherry mx blues switches are pleasant too. I think the cherry switches are smoother and it is easier to customize.
I would like to see this technology (from the model m) on a modern keyboard like the filco keyboard majestouch 2 for example.

Its not actually the key cap that makes the noise, rather its the bump in the click mechanism in the cherry mx body. I doubt the key material contributes much to the sound. It *might* contribute to the tactile sensation though.

Being that I have 7 IBM Model M keyboards, I have a little experience with them dating back to when I was in college back in the late 90s. I think that there is nothing like the experience of typing on an IBM Model M keyboard. In my opinion, It is the gold standard of the clicky keyboards. I have also had several Cherry MX blue keyboards and Cherry MX Brown keyboards from the early 90s. To me, I type a little faster on the cherry mx boards, but I prefer the sound, look, and feel of the IBM model M over the other mechanical keyboards.
btw I have heard that cherry mx green is a lot like the ibm model m keyboard. One day I hope to build a keyboard with them and see if I like them as much as I like the model m keys.

It can occur due to many reasons, with more than 20 years of age many things could go wrong. Try disassemble the board until you see the main PCB and see whats wrong.

    • @jimtaylor201
      @jimtaylor201 7 лет назад

It's possible that some of the traces may have gone bad - there are electrical traces silk screened onto a on a plastic film - it's likely that one of the traces on this plastic may have cracked. Getting to the trace film can be a bit of an issue as you would need to essentially knock out out the plastic stud/rivets that attach the barrel plate to the plastic barrel array.
Once you're in you should be able to inspect the trace film - if you have a continuity tester check to see if the traces are intact if they are not then you can get a trace pen and then just draw over the effected spot then check the continuity before closing up.
Now when getting to the trace film you had to destroy the plastic rivets - to put the board back together you will need to get bolts to re-assemble the board.
Here's a site with a tutorial on how to remove and replace the rivets.

Model M identical to the Compaq PS/2 keyboard I have .. except bubble dome switches on Compaq. Gaming MoBo's still support PS/2 which is nice. I have a Razor BWU 2016 which has bad Space key switch and broken LED .. these switches are comparable to Cherry MX Blues? .. if anyone knows. Think I would get MX Green and drink less. Would break less keyboards ..

Model M are over eBay, and Unicomp makes new Model M keyboards, so they are not rare. I have 3 Model M keyboards, all in complete, working condition. They are very durable, and easy to clean. Most keys have removable keycaps, so you an gently pry off the caps and throw them in a soapy bucket of water to remove the grime. It only takes about 2hrs to do a complee tear down, clean up and reassembly of an M. You do need a special 5.5mm (7/32") hex socket to remove the 4 cover screws, as 3 are in deep narrow recessed holes. I do recommend removing the cover, as lots of crumbs, hair, and cruft hides under areas you cannot reach with the top cover on. My first M was put into service in 1988, and it still works flawlessly. I've head good and bad reviews on the new Unicomp keyboards. I'm considering buying both an M and a keyboard with MX Blue keys for a head-to-head comparison.

From the same place that you mentioned, schools and government places.. once they are old, those places auction them out as old electronic trash. Surprisingly, keyboard community here is doing really well in recent years; price of these Model M have gone up 3x - 4x from when i record this video.

The XT Model F feels much lighter than the AT Model F. Sample size of 1 each, though. The XT Model F is a pleasure to type on besides the layout and the fact that it's only compatible with my IBM XT. The AT Model F requires too much force, in my opinion, similar to the blue logo (Lexmark era) Model M. Gray logo Model M is somewhere in between the XT Model F and AT Model F.

The Model-M can be used for games - though the noise may be an issue if you do a lot of voice chatting. One thing you need to be aware of is needing to let the switch reset before pressing again which can be a bit of an issue if you are doing any double tapping within the game.

  • @jacobhotaling8959

cherry mx blue is the worst sounding click i think the IBM model f and model m have a way better click. when i think of a blue switch i think of alps SKCM blue and when i think of clicky tactile i think of IBM BTW IBM buckling springs have the most accurate click as they don't use a click bar or leaf its the sound of the switch actuating iv had cherry where you will hear it but it is not registered yet the IBM registers on the click. BS you cant find it in nice condition you can spend alot and get a NOS full size for 250 an average m can be easily cleaned up, hell i got a NOS model m SSK for 60$ and that is cheap but also you got a later Lexmark with permanently attached cable the original 190131 and the average 1391401 has a detachable SDL cable and ALL ssk's iv encountered have SDL but if you want a tenkeyless and are not patent like me witing over 6 months for the right deal you can expect to pay upwords of 250$ used NOS gets ALOT more

The Model M is so much better than any MX switch. Alps switches are a close second, but Cherry are rubbish.

Cherry have the highest quality, not to mention keyboards with those switches come with rgb, wrist rest, dedicated macro and media keys and look sexy as hell

Model m is not mechanical; it uses a membrane

It’s more or less a hybrid of both

You're saying it's not mechanical just because it uses a membrane mat to register key presses?
