- Making a Holocaust clown movie is hard. Let’s talk about how difficult it was to make The Day The Clown Cried, from a producer not paying the cast and crew, to Jerry Lewis choosing to never release the film. But surprise! Ian told Clint and Rae the episode would be about the original The Nutty Professor...

FUCK SAKES!!!! Its gone for New Zealand viewers
And it's gone again! Shame...
@ItWasAShtShow was driving home with your latest episode playing and you mentioned the pinned comment. I was like "Christmas miracle".
I guess I've been grinched
@@ItWasAShtShow Merry Kirihimete and happy holidays Rae, Ian and Clint!
I still cannot believe they parodied that film on Animaniacs due to Spielberg being, like, one of the three people who have seen it.
This is like making a comedy about the Vietnam War and calling it “Agent Orange goes to Funky Town”
what about the Producers?
Dick Van Dyke performed all of Mary Poppins completely drunk, so you never know.
Always so excited when a new episode drops. You guys have quickly become my favorite podcast and a huge inspiration for my own upcoming podcast series. You guys are awesome!!
I just want to see more Star Trek content! There are SO many sh*t shows in there! 🖖
I started on a Star Trek episode but want Clint to finish it! He's the trekkie.
Oh man.. yeah a trek episode would be awesome
Just found this podcast/video series over thanksgiving. I’ve binged it. Thanks for the fun content. Oh by the way…Clint.
An unusually balanced look at this infamous film. For the grace of gods go all of our fellow filmmakers. Thanks for not taking the usual cheap shots. Stay classy and keep up the good work.
"The Day the Clown Cried" is a mythic-level $#!t show.
I saw Jerry Lewis speak at a graduation ceremony at Chapman, I was really and truly tempted to ask him about this film during the social hour afterwards, regrettably, I did not. Bonus, his graduation speech was hysterical.
Oh boy this move, this movie is definitely worthy of being called a shitshow.
Very well researched, and extremely awesome presentation! Truly appreciate the work everyone puts into each episode. I'm amazed at how you all weave gravitas with humor. There are so many tangents that it truly felt like the infomercial trope of "but wait, there's more!"
The way this episode unfolds is so great! I love listening to you guys!
Came to the channel to re-listen to an old episode, was delighted to see a new episode had just dropped! Just finished it, already miss listening to you three crack wise, can't wait for the next episode.
remember that episode of Yes, Dear! when they went to a (fictional) Kevin Smith movie about a Clown that was put in a Vietnamese POW camp and had to be a clown ,to keep morale up
i'm kind of curious if that particular scene was in reference to this entire movie
I did not stop watching this from the beginning, but the moment you guys started watching the video and describing it i suddenly felt like the ghost of Jerry Lewis was going to strike again, so i had to finish in one go lol. The summary at the beginning floored me, i honestly think it works just fine as a short story or film rather than a long film. The reading with those guys in '97 sounds fucking insane to have seen. It was also pretty funny to hear the reactions when you mentioned about the library of cong. bits contrasted to the scorn in their voice upon having been Nutty Professor'd, i chuckled at their gasps. But the fact that Ian not only fully researched this and also watched and time stamped a version of the film, all while getting Rae and Klant to go off in another direction, makes surprised he didnt burst at the seams suddenly. well done Ian (how could you let him get away with this Rae).
Glad you found it entertaining! I was really worried about this one.
i was hemming and hawing with Rea and Clant in the beginning and was thrown of by the title and thought it was a mistake, then i was sucked in hard dude lol.@@ItWasAShtShow
Jerry Lewis was so good in King of Comedy.
Awesome show y’all! Super glad I got to listen to this episode before the files are trashed by Jerry’s ghost 😂
Any day now!
Hell yeah this podcast is the best, just ran out of episodes and u upload this keep ‘em coming please I need more
Down periscope is hilarious!
As always great episode, you guys are amazing
Great work, team!!
Last night I had really bad insomnia so I just stared at the ceiling thinking about this movie. So weird this episode is here now. My brain is broken
We're totally not in your head... 👀
@@ItWasAShtShow ruclips.net/video/rnuzXfuT-TQ/видео.htmlfeature=shared I think I found that missing video with the 20 mins of footage 👀
Yes! Someone on our Discord posted this too. That is the exact same video, same video title. Post only two weeks ago, and like a week after we recorded this.
This movie could have been an amazing Robin Williams roll. He did drama and comedy so well
Side note.... I always loved the Jerry Lewis impersonations on Animaniacs
I forgot about those!
I wasn't gonna listen to this. It reminded me too much of my grandmother that survived the camps when I read the script.
But i'm glad I did, and I always enjoy your guys podcasts.
Thank you for bringing stuff
So glad you liked this. I tried very hard not to make discussing the movie a punching bag like so many want to do.
Jerry Lewis was doing Frank Sinatra, not Dean Martin, in "The Nutty Professor".
Love you guys! I'll be real, I've never heard of Jerry Lewis and I've never seen the Nutty professor so I loved the bait and switch. (is Jerry Lewis the inspiration for professor frink? You guys kept doing what I thought was frink impressions lol). Also would you guys consider starting a subreddit for ppl to discuss the eps? Its probably just more admin I guess
Yes. Professor Frink is basically Jerry Lewis’ Nutty Professor. Soon as you hear him, you’ll see it.
Oh as for a subreddit, we do have one (we also have our Patreon Discord channel). But none of us know anything about Reddit so we aren't in there ever.
I love Down Periscope! Welcome aboard!
I intended on only listening to the beginning of this for my commute but I ended up listening to it throughout the first hour of my shift.
Apologies?! haha
There is so much bizarre lore behind jerry Lewis lmao , also new listener :-)
Welcome!
Not really a big part of his lore, but look at the bloopers for The Caddy ad he did with Dean, you get to see how these two were actually like
As a cadaverously old person who saw many Jerry Lewis movies in the theater during the 60's, I would have suggested "The Family Jewels" in preference to "The Nutty Professor" for your comrades' prep work. It ends with a semi-serious scene of Lewis as a sad clown leaving the scene with a young girl. I would also add that Lewis was proud that all his films made money: no losers ever. That may have contributed to his attitude to "The Day the Clown Cried".
“ Funny story“ y’all !? Lol
I’m 58 years old “Gen X”
I Forced my mom to spend my entire childhood having telethons for Jerry‘s kids in our front yard?!? Lol 😂
What was the crazy movie with the fish?!? Lol
Merry Christmas! - Judson & Buddy! - God Bless You ALL!!! :-)
This movie was apparently his first attempt at doing drama.
He must have sadly realized that he wasn't able to, after this. At least not as a director.
But he certainly started appearing in much less movies and in more serious roles, in subsequent years.
Scorcese's "King of comedy" and Kusturica's "Arizona Dream" come to mind. And those are great movies.
The last 20 ish minutes rival the funniest moments in this podcasts history but everything before that are so depressing
Hahaha... sorry?
I got the down periscope reference. That is a deep cut.
The opening had me so confused. Wtf nutty professor? I had no idea about the day the clown cried, and was like, is this and the nutty professor similar storylines? Am i bad at reading titles? Wrong title?
Ian with the mind games for the audience and the cast.
Gotta keep this thing fresh!
This was one of the first legendary films I heard about.
6:50 Funny the impression I got was she was going to use the stuff *on herself*. Not that she needed to.
Please do an episode about the Street Fighter movie. Super cursed production that almost started a civil war in Thailand
Hi Clint
I know EXACTLY who he meant from Down Periscope but hold the phone, when did we get a resolution with Barths Watch?
I’m writing this half way through, but have to write it before I forget… wanted to say that I almost cried just at the description of the movie, and there is only 1 person I could see pulling off this movie… and its Robin Williams, so in my mind its never going to be made.. but I’m VERY surprised that no one has attempted to make this movie, as it seems like an Oscar grab type of film!
Agreed. In my mind, Robin Williams was one of the greatest actors ever.
🤯robin would have killed this. I can picture the tears already.
Have you seen Robin in Jakob the Liar?
good news! it's finally being released. The Day the Clown Cried is coming out in June of 2024
I listen to this podcast after listening to dark stuff like Darknet Diaries and Behind the Bastards. Lol
I miss Spy Magazine...
would you do an episode on the recent marvel stuff? or need to wait a while to find out more info
Eventually, yes, but I kind of wrote myself into a corner with that one by starting the video series. So it will be way down the line. It also helps with time because more people will talk about the issues. On a fun note part three is written!
@@ItWasAShtShow oh, of course!
Maybe we can get a screening of the movie going on the stingray while eating creamed corn-flavored deviled ham.
Down periscope is great and so is toby huss 😬
Next June is just a few days away!
Show me the Clint! 0:15
HOW DARE you guys not know the classic film DOWN PERISCOPE?
Was waiting during the discussion of tasteful approach to humor and the Holocaust for some mention of Jakob the Liar (Robin Williams)
We actually do discuss that in the extended Patreon version of this episode.
Commenting for the algorithm. Also, as always, #ReleaseEmpiresOfTheDeep
#releasethedeep!!!!!!!
Some older listeners to the podcast may know Toby Huss as Artie, the Srongest Man in the World on The Adventures of Pete and Pete.
Hi fellas. It's June 2024
There are other Jerry Lewis movies worth watching if you like the silliness of the Kelp moments of Nutty Professor. The Ladies Man and Family Jewels are quite good. As are some of his movies with Dean Martin
Was the filming of the Clown even wrapped?
Clint
I ❤❤ this podcast
I'm hurt about the lack of knowledge of Down Periscope. HURT!
Right?!
@@ItWasAShtShow I hope y'all will be rectifying this injustice!
I so want to see this movie
It's not a silly comedy, Lewis was dead serious about the movie.
I don’t think you listened to this.
Everyone knows Down Periscope!
its almost june
I’m here for a $#!T SHOW!
CLINT
Congrats on being #1 podcast. Sorry i'm only here 😅, premium and download is often less data than podbeam.
As usual paused all the rest to listen to this 1st thing in the morning
Pretty sure its another good one no doubt 😀

If they finally made this movie, who would they cast now?
Chris Pratt, probably.

If there was a drinking game for the number of "like" being used on these podcasts you would need enough booze to kill an elephant. Try harder guys, you sound a little silly.
Record yourself sometime and we’ll gladly point out your crutch words.
I grew up with Jerry Lewis. I haven't seen the movie--just a RUclips re-enactment of the script. But whether the movie is good or bad, the woman, who seems thoroughly prone to total dismissal of JL. is the one thing I get much of a feeling about. I don't like her.
You say that this is the definitive example of a shit show....yet I don't see The Island of Dr Moreau(1996) on your uploads...
I Claudius 1937? suggestion of a review.
Game of thrones season 1?
Huh?
which 1 huh?@@ItWasAShtShow
it is literally hard to listen to this. catch me in the video section instead of this lazy directionless "podcast" you got
How bout just not listening instead of leaving a dickhead comment? If it’s not for you, that’s fine.
Really? I read that at some point, Jerry Lewis came into possession of all the footage and did a new edit of the film. Making it as complete as he could. Of course, it still needed reshoots, but at that point Lewis, for one, was noticeably older, and the new footage just wouldn't look like it's coming from the same film. He wouldn't be able to maintain continuity. He showed his "final" version of the film in private screenings to a select group of people. I think it's important to note that there were people who saw the film that said it was good, or at least not that bad. The script writer was too close to the project, and being sore about the changes made to her script might have colored her perception, I don't know how objective she was. As far as Harry Shearer, he wouldn't get much mileage out of being positive about the film, he got more attention out of saying it's bad, I don't know how much I can trust him. Was he just telling a story, or was that his objective opinion? As far as Jerry Lewis, if enough people tell you enough times that a thing is bad for a long enough time, you eventually start to believe it yourself. At some point, you can't think about that thing without associating the thing with its negative perception. In his later years, he would talk about being proud of the film and ashamed of it in the same breath. I saw him speak at some event once, he was very senile. His brain shut down at one point, just froze for an uncomfortably long time. When he came to, he started manically shoving a cup in his mouth, then suddenly snapped out of it and continued his speech like nothing happened. So I don't know how much I'd trust his later opinion of it being bad either. I think there's a chance it's surprisingly good. At this point, it has such a legend built up, it has a reputation of being bad. People have decided that their opinion is that it's bad, before having seen it. Even if it IS good, it's probably not so good that it can break people's expectations, they'll still say it's bad, and I'm sure Lewis really didn't want to deal with that. Of course it could have it's positive aspects, but its tone is just slightly off and so it just doesn't work, despite its quality otherwise. But people don't want to believe that because it's boring. It's more fun to sh on it or praise it. My theory makes people think too much, so they'll probably be mad at me.
Im glad thet realized the movie was cringe and should never see the light of day
Hi guys, new episode woot.
Ooo switcharoo

Can you do Heaven's Gate or Cutthroat Island ?
