Eraqus, despite knowing that Xehanort had interests in darkness and the Keyblade War did present Xehanort to his students as his peer who brought Ventus to the Land of Departure and oversaw Terra and Aqua’s Mark of Mastery exam with Eraqus. To the three, certainly Terra and Aqua, Master Xehanort was above board. Xehanort played everyone, even Eraqus who should have known better, so that he can manipulate Terra doesn’t make Terra as stupid as people think he is. Even Aqua, who wasn’t part of the plan, played into Xehanort’s hands by driving Terra and Ventus away in Radiant Garden.
In defence of the waterworks scene Terra has just come off of a fight with Aqua where she’s straight up said she’s acting as an agent for Eraqus in observing him, that neither his Master or friend trust him and he’s not taking seriously that Ven is on his side. Terra isn’t thinking clearly and Xehanort is the one person he sees as in his corner who can help him. That he’s tapping into darkness shows he’s acting on something more primal and isn’t listening to his inner Akbar in that it’s a trap.

The Maleficent scene is fun because it's the only time someone actually has what amounts to a nice chat with her. There's not indication that she's being manipulative yet, although she is, they're just bullshitting about the Unversed. It's just "Hi. I'm Terra" "Hey, I'm Maleficent" "Do you know why these monsters are showing up?" "Didn't give it much thought, they aren't bothering me." "They do suck don't they, lol"

People tend to see naive characters as dumb solely because they wouldnt know any better. As far as we know, Terra has lived his entire life on the land of departure, so a lot of his interactions are coming from a place of naivete and trust. He has never been deceived or tricked before by people, so why would he be expecting it? Both Terra and Aqua were more than likely over protected by Erauqs and never really developed the social skills needed to recognized deceit, and we can see from their interactions with other characters, they seem to be rather socially awkward, which is contrasted by Ven who seems to be a lot more socially capable than them despite being "younger".

  • @lilchaos9212
    @lilchaos9212 Год назад +12

Terra never deserved the hate he got to be honest and it was way unwarranted. Like the whole thing with "Oh how could he trust Xehanort, the guy is obviously evil!!" Okay then... but Terra didn't know that? Why aren't we blaming the 'wise Masters' who knew fully well that Xehanort was using darkness and up to shady shit, who let Xehanort watch the exam years after he attacked and mutilated Eraqus with darkness? Why didn't Eraqus say anything?? Why did he let Terra, who had clear issues with darkness, be around a guy like that? Why did Yen Sid, who claimed he "should not assume" not say ANYTHING? Blame Eraqus and Yen Sid, not Terra. Terra was a victim who trusted a man that his master/father trusted despite having every reason not to.

To expand on the Hook point, Terra does afterward trick Hook into letting him free Tinker Bell. So in the end, who was the real idiot between them?
Also, to expand on Hades, it was clear that Terra wasn't succumbing to darkness - which is what Hades really wanted. So he tried to brute-force him toward it by controlling Zack, but even that failed.

Since I played his story I never saw him as stupid rlly, especially with the context on how he spend most his life only in Land of Departure and not much social interaction with Eraqus and Aqua Ven. Aside from that, we do have to admit BBS is too short of a game for exploring 3 characters.
And tbh I would be more tolerate to people making fun of Terra's idiocy if people didn't workship Aqua too muchb😭 All 3 wayfinder trios has their fault but Aqua always seems like to be right one for most people, which annoyed me.

  • @eldritchthorne

Terra judges by actions, not by looks. I often have to remind people in the fandoms I'm in that you have to have an in-universe reason to hate the villain if you want to interact with it story-wise, not from the stance of an audience member. By using an audience's view with an OC is just metagaming, something I've come to hate when telling stories. The character is not supposed to know things the reader is or you destroy the story.
I just recently rewatched KH-BBS compilation and felt that the game didn't do Terra justice on a few fronts, but all-in-all, he's being told what he wants by the villains like Riku but is finding out that they're not what they seem the hard way. Granted, he could have been a bit suspicious here and there, but he's just a good guy trying to do what he was told.
Honestly, from an in-game standpoint, yeah, I'd trust Xehanort with my life because of my master. Why wouldn't I? He's just an old goth guy with knowledge of things that could help.

It’s funny how people go to ‘these characters look evil so that must mean they are’ because basically every character in the KH universe doesn’t care about appearances. They only don’t trust a character when there is a proper reason to, Sora doesn’t trust the Org 13 because of their goals and with Roxas’ subconscious in Sora he has a bigger reason to hate their guts it’s not because ‘they look evil’. Frankly people understanding that Terra isn't stupid as for some reason people claimed he was just seems like KH fans actually growing up after all this time. Granted I didn't think Terra was ever dumb, I just didn't pay much attention to him in my first playthrough. The game itself tried to present him as impulsive and at first I was just listening to the story as it was told. Only during probably my first Aqua playthrough that I realized that what the characters themselves tried to say about Terra wasn't even true. From then on, every time I played as Terra I ony noticed how level-headed he was.

I just thought, too - Terra, during that "trapped Xehanort" scene, had just discovered one of his closest friends was told to keep an eye on him because he was assumed to be toying with Darkness. Perhaps he was so upset at this news that he didn't think clearly, and almost wanted to prove "no, the Darkness doesn't have a hold on me - see? I'm saving Master Xehanort!".
Regardless, I don't necessarily even think him falling for it was dumb - even if Master Xehanort was extremely powerful, Terra doesn't know HOW much so or how powerful Braig might have been; as you said, he doesn't judge a book by its cover, so perhaps he believed that, despite Braig's "average-joe" appearance, he was powerful enough to overpower Xehanort.
Either way, the poor guy really does get an unfair amount of hatred sent his way 😭 always nice to see a defence of Terra video

The hate and criticism towards Terra reminds of the way the final fantasy community treated Snow Villiers for years. People just don't like the character, so the critics do everything in their power to ignore nuances of how the character is portrayed in their story. The scenes where the characters look stupid only makes sense when you cut out the full context of the event taking place.

  • @DarkLord-7

So with encountering Maleficent, Terra did not trust her, but he did not initially view her as a villain either. While the latter makes him look like a dumbass, keep in mind, he's never watched Disney movies. I'm not even sure if movies are a thing yet in that universe. So he would have no idea if Maleficent is evil or not until she did something. And since she was the first person he encountered and all worlds are different, he could have assumed that everyone looks like Maleficent.
With Snow White, yeah, as said in the video, he investigates Snow White, can clearly see she's not evil in any way, and then goes back to tell the queen "fuck off, give me the answers".
As for talking with Xehanort, Eraqus called him an old friend. While we the audience already know he's the villain, the characters don't know that, except Eraqus and Yen Sid I guess. And Xehanort is good at manipulation.
When dealing with Hades, while Hades has made some valid points that I'm sure Terra recognizes, at no point does Terra really trust Hades.
As for Captain Hook, clearly Terra doesn't want to automatically assume all pirates are bad. Afterall, he did just see Captain Hook be attacked by Unversed.
Also Aqua has been of little help in the situation. One moment she defends Terra when he's not around, and the next, she's confronting him with info she's taken at face value without giving him a chance to defend himself. Not to mention Eraqus having a fear/hatred of the dark. Terra and Aqua are basically subversions of their archetypes. Terra is the strong one, yet he thinks things through most of the time before acting. Aqua on the other hand is more impulsive, despite being a mage-type.
So yeah, I also believe that Terra is smarter than he's given credit for.

The whole 'you can tell their evil just by looking at them' thing has always been silly to me. Most works of fiction don't have characters recognize a villain just by looking at them. Villains traditionally sharing some traits to set them apart from other characters, such as unnatural skin colours or deformities has generally been more for the audiences sake. I don't know why people berate Terra for this specifically when you could say the same thing for a million different fictional characters.
Besides, he's visiting worlds he knows nothing about, how's he to know what's normal and what's not? Should Sora have committed mass genocide at the Monsters Inc world because everyone looks like, well, a monster? And yes, I realize he did draw his keyblade when he first saw Mike and Sully, but that only proves that judging from appearances is stupid in the KH universe. (Edit: Actually, IIRC, he drew his keyblade after seeing Donald and Goofy in their monster forms, but the point still stands.)
And I think the worst bit of criticism I often see thrown Terra's way is that he was stupid for allowing Xehanort to trick him into weakening Eraqus, and they talk like Eraqus' death was his fault. Like, what did you want him to do? Just sit back and watch Eraqus kill Ventus for something out of his control? Besides, after he intervened to save Ven the first thing he did was try to talk things through with Eraqus. It was Eraqus who turned to violence first, of course Terra would defend himself. Begrudgingly, I might add.
Eraqus himself admits that he had been in the wrong, that he shouldn't have tried to end Ventus and that he failed the both of them as their master. Honestly, I'm not sure anyone who blames Terra for Eraqus' death has the right to be calling anyone in this game stupid...

Even a master can slip up or be caught off guard not to mention the first thing Terra said to Braig about him capturing Xehanort is that “there’s no way he’d be caught by a thug like you.”
Further more not only did Braig show that he has the ability to control space in that battle but form Terra’s point of view who knows what level of trickery Braig used to subdue Xehanort or what kind of magic is being used to hold the chains in place
Obviously as a 4th wall viewer it’s easy to say oh Terra is so gullible cuz it’s clear to the player that Xehanort laid a convincing trap but form Terra’s perspective how can he not be concerned about what he’s literally witnessing especially considering Xehanort was the only one that kinda vogued for him & he looked up to despite his ulterior motive to do so
That’s the point, it was a ploy set by Xehanort form the start, this doesn’t make Terra stupid or gullible, it was his sincerity that caused most of his downfall, especially when he eliminated Eriqus in order to protect Ventus, yes he used the darkness but his drive to do so came form a place of light
I’d argue that he’s even better then Riku when in comes to relations to the darkness cuz sure Riku was able to overcome the darkness in a way where he didn’t fall into the darkness however Maleficent made it clear to Riku that she was evil & bribed him with the promise of Kairi’s heart & control over the darkness
Maleficent couldn’t even resort Kairi’s heart in the end cuz it was inside Sora & his heart is filled with light that she can’t even see let alone control, unlike telling have truths to Terra like how Flora put the denizens of the castle to sleep but not even explaining it was due to her action that the fairy had to subdue them, controlling him Jedi mind trick style just to capture Aurora’s heart & blatantly deceiving him with false intentions of a greater good like Xehanort did & her relations to him
& my god I could go on thou far as I’m concerned everything else in your video rings true but if you can’t see anything in defence of Terra in that Radiant Garden section of the timeline then I urge you to replay or rewatch it cuz there is a lot of context provided that proves it was a matter outta Terra’s hands due to Xehanort having played him like a puppet & using other forces of evil to perpetuate the ruse

So it’s a 9/10 IMO & until ya brought up Radiant Garden it would’ve been a 10/10 seriously, even if you had said nothing regarding it I was content & agreed with all the points you had brought up & your video format is fine enough by me to keep me form clicking off
Plus this isn’t the first video I watch on your channel despite me only running into it recently however this is the only video I left a comment & this comment may be extremely negative in nature thou just like Terra it’s form a place of compassion & the will to care comes form a place of light not darkness
I’m just exhausted at rehashing the same arguments especially when I found others that can explain it folds better then I can & don’t get me wrong I actually like Terra but I wouldn’t even consider him close to my favourite KH character especially outta the BBS trio, just sick of seeing him get the short stick on public perception when most all his actions can be easily justified

Personally I never thought that Terra was stupid, there is a difference between being naive and being stupid. As far as I'm aware Terra and Aqua have lived in 1 world most if not all of their life, so I think it's understandable that his knowledge is limited on certain things. Not to mention when Xehanort was doing his evil villain faces he only did it during times when either nobody was looking at him or when he had his back turn to them.
Not to mention Xehanort manipulated Terra by poking at his insecurities and saying the things that Terra wanted to hear so I think it's understandable how that would influence his judgment. Terra in general is a good natured dude, he even felt responsible for his master's death even though he wasn't the one responsible for it happening. Terra is just a good dude who made some mistakes along the way, but let's be real here he's not the only one.

When it comes to a character being dumb in BBS, I don't think of Terra at all cuz him trusting master Xehanort is very understandable cuz he makes valid points about the light and darkness and how balance is key(Riku is the evidence of that) and as the BEST FRIEND of master eraqus, why SHOULDN'T they trust him? And he always coincidentally meets the bad guy without knowing that they are the bad guy and would never follow them again once he realizes their sinister motives, like the queen from snow white. But when I think of anyone being stupid in this game, I think of Eraqus and maybe Aqua.
There are two things about Aqua that makes me groan, one is she acuses terra of all the bs that he didn't even do when she did not even see and only heard all the bs that happened so she had no reason to doubt him in the first place and created an unnecessary drama for terra and eraqus. If anything, it's Ventus that has the reason to doubt terra simply cuz terra blatantly ignored his concerns for him before he leaves the land of departure. Two is saving terranort from the realm of darkness, she is one of the reasons why kh1 or the entire timeline after bbs happened and why the emblem heartless still continue to exist cuz xehanort is still in control of terra's body. Thank god she was fixed in 0.2 or else I still would not like her
Eraqus is just an absolute headache. First off, his "light good, darkness bad" mentality is just not a good quality for a master cuz he rejects the other side of the coin, which should be a natural balance, no wonder terra failed the mark of mastery exam, he is always doomed to fail for having darkness unlike aqua and ven. Second, he was literally going to kill ven for finding out about the x blade and how ven is a part of it(melody of memory can go stfu retconning this scene for changing the "kill" to "seal") instead of y'know, SOLVING THE PROBLEM BY TALKING IT OUT. Last is also solving the problem by talking it out but with his BEST FRIEND Xehanort. Really now, after a few words with xehanort, what does eraqus do? Combat ofc. I swear to god, none of the characters in this game talk to each other like a normal person. Not only do I hate both his boss fights for his random staggers, random guards and random counters and especially his frame 1 bullshit stuff but I also hate him in the story. Finally him and xehanort are completely gone after kh3 (not counting dark road)

    • @Final_RPG
      @Final_RPG  Год назад +1

I can totally understand why eraqus wanted ven to cease to exist cause then literally all of creations would be absolutely doomed and it’s probably one of the hardest choices to make which is very very dark just to say btw. But I also know why terra saved him sure he didn’t know he was part of the xblade but still it’s like his brother and I understood every reason the choices terra made especially going to different universes they were all absolutely valid and plausible!

She helped Terranort because she thought that if there was a chance Terra can retake his body, it was a chance worth taking.
We may have left him to rot in the RoD with the knowledge we have now, but Aqua cared about Terra.

    • @1992holycrap

*Was* Aqua "fixed" though? Because from what I could tell, she still acted the same as she did in BBS, just more traumatized & mopey. Does 0.2 or KH3 actually address and/or acknowledge the part she played in bringing Xehanort's plans to fruition, as well as screwing herself & her friends over, or does she still just blame *"The Darkness"* for everything? I'm genuinely asking because it feels like I'm missing something, here.
As for Eraques... yeah, there's no excuse.

  • @lsdxiii
    @lsdxiii Год назад +4

He seems more sheltered than stupid. Thinking about it, Eraqus likely treated him and Aqua the same as he did Ventus. Training them only in the Land of Departure and never letting them experience the outside world. So he has no idea what people from other worlds are like. I will say it is frustrating how often he gives people the benefit of the doubt instead of erring on the side of caution, especially after what he thinks he did to Aurora, but overall I see him as being kind, trusting, and sheltered. He tries not to judge people too quickly and more often than not he manages to make the right choice. Except in Neverland, no idea how he fell for that "light" bs Hook fed him.

This specific problem isn't in Terra, it's a problem in presentation. The writing and framing is loudly melodramatic to us, but Xehanort in the KH universe, is just a respected old guy, not a giant anime villain. In our universe, we can see his obvious villain tropes because the author wants the audience to know he's a villain, not the characters.
It's a genuine flaw on the developer's part that the game turned out this way, but there's a storytelling language here they are using. They just fumbled the bag hard on that execution.

Terra messed up. That isn’t anything new or ground breaking because everyone in BBS did to some degree. Terra wasn't even the worst offender that would be Eraquis.
We know Xehanort sent Vanitas to spy on the group multiple times before the game started. He used Eraquis to get a recomendation to the group. Manipulated them into a situation where their communication would fracture because their relationships were in flux.
Terra has a hero complex. He needs to be the strongest so he can protect those around him. Aqua being made a Master when he wasn't was a blow to him. He didn’t become violet about that which is massively in his favor. He instead set out to prove himself and was manipulated by a person who used the truth as a weapon (Maleficent).
He now has failed again to control his darkness and spends his next two worlds trying his best to do better. He even in his last disney world of this section is able to meet up again with Aqua. Everything looks up when he gets advice and completes his mission of finding Xehanort.
Then Radiant garden happens with Aqua now questioning everything Terra has done. This only feeds into his fear of losing everything he has. Then Xehanort is supposively captured which even Terra questions but figures it doesn’t hurt to check.
Terra is vulnerable here Xehanort knows that and abuses the trust Eraquis' introduction instilled in Terra. Xehanort has played the cards of accepting mistakes, accepting darkness is a part of everyone and that there is a place Terra can belong.
Past this point Terra is doing his best to follow his mission of beating the unversed and Vanitas while getting his darkness under control.
Land of departure is all about the communication breakdown that has existed between everyone. Terra goes there to stop Ventus from making a massive mistake. Fights Eraquis to stop him from killing his brother figure and then watches as Xehanort kills Eraquis.
Right after this is the Keyblade graveyard where a grieving and pissed off Terra is facing the man who killed his father figure, ruined his friends' life and betrayed his trust. I can’t blame Terra for any part of his actions in the graveyard as well... the Wayfinder Trio really didn’t screw up here.
Past this point Terra is just fighting Xehanort to regain control of his body until KH3.
You can debate Aqua messed up royally in the aftermath of her fight with Terranort but we have no roadmap for how that reality would play out.

Well to cover both I guess sora wasn’t very dumb he just had moments where he was head first kind of guy and that doesn’t make you dumb exactly. And the other hand sora even before going to take the exam he tells yensid he’s saying what he said because it’s a formality which is true sora and Riku have proven themselves time and time again on there lonesome without any guidance from a keyblade master. This is why I believe sora was not taking the exam as serious and as well sora was nerfed twice due to having his self reduced in age for the exam and also having darkness in him from the sigil on his clothing. The reasoning of why Riku was serious was more so because he was still battling the darkness and he wanted to finally rid and it and make a new which is also why he cut his hair very short cause people in Japan when someone dies or when they start a new they cut there hair as a fresh start to the new path ahead and sora in kh 2 had his cocky moments and they kinda drew along to ddd but overall I love the man he’s very helpful in any means even if does mean to sacrifice himself for everyone to live and that’s a true hero.
