    *Question* : What are your thoughts on Superhero Movies? Martin Scorcese called them Theme Park Rides. You agree with him?

    • @ElliotCoen
      @ElliotCoen  3 года назад +8

      Great question. I think there's a lot of nuance here so I may do a video soon discussing my thoughts. But I will say that movies should never be dismissed for being 'low brow' or theme park movies. Such films can bring so much enjoyment to peoples' lives and truly change their outlook on life. The Avengers movies will have brought happiness and joy to people on a scale that Scorsese's films will never reach, if we're talking pure numbers on how many people see those films.

    • @scottgates601
      @scottgates601 3 года назад +1

      @@ElliotCoen Good point, but will Avengers stand the test of time like Taxi Driver? I could watch Taxi Driver over and over rather than watch a super hero movie. I get nothing out of them they're so bland and empty idk.

    • @ElliotCoen
      @ElliotCoen  3 года назад +1

      @@scottgates601 the reality is that the Marvel movies will long out last a film like Taxi Driver because of how they have proliferated into modern pop culture. Now, I much prefer Taxi Driver of course, but that film has been seen by a fraction of the people who have seen and loved Avengers. The Marvel films have changed more peoples' lives that Scorsese's filmography combined

    You (along with a couple others), were literally the reason I “discovered” Criterion in an official way during 2020, and the first time I took advantage of the B&N sales. Thanks for all you do.

  • @vaughnjarvi
    @vaughnjarvi 3 года назад +4

    Elliot, I'm honored that you've answered my question! Similarly to you, I discovered Kiarostami through the Criterion Collection (I began with 'The Koker Trilogy'), and I must stay that you are in for a treat with 'Taste of Cherry.' While I have yet to view 'Close-up,' or any of his earliest or most recent films, I would currently proclaim 'Taste of Cherry' to be my favorite out of Kiarostami's filmography. The individual films of 'The Koker Trilogy' are distinctive, cumulative masterpieces in their own sense, and are truly incredible. But, 'Taste of Cherry' was absolutely stunning - visually beautiful, wholly compelling, and extremely satisfying and fulfilling. While 'The Koker Trilogy' introduced me to the themes of Kiarostami's films, and his directorial style, 'Taste of Cherry' was a truly special picture, and has really resonated with me.
    On a personal note, your channel is so special, in that it's broadened my sense of film, and of the nuance to boutique Blu-ray labels. My personal collection began with purely the Criterion Collection, but your videos have shown the wide variety of valuable labels, and I plan to make the venture into Arrow's catalog, specifically, in the near future. Keep up the great content, and I wish nothing but the best for you and your channel!

    Hey Elliot, just discovered the channel over Christmas and am really enjoying it. I live in the Washington, DC, area in the U.S. My collection is nowhere near as big as yours, but I do enjoy getting nice boutique releases of films I love. I collect Criterion and some Arrow (though many of their releases seem to be Region 2 only). I am a big horror fan and enjoy collecting Scream Factory releases as well as Vestron Video Collector's Series and American Genre Film Archive releases. I don't know if Scream Factory can really be called boutique, but they do a really nice job with their releases, loaded with special features and great artwork.
    Thanks for all of the great horizon-broadening recs. Have you seen Black Christmas? If so, what do you think? Hope your 2021 is off to a good start! Talk soon!

    I was hoping you’d say Indicator (in regards to who makes the best booklets) ;)

    • @darrenblizzard3851
      @darrenblizzard3851 3 года назад +1

      Agreed, Indicator is my favourite boutique label at the moment though I always get pretty excited at what Eureka are releasing these days (their recent release of Mothra was stunning!). 88 Films are also stepping up their game and doing some great stuff and 101's black label series also does a decent booklet. Shout out also to Second Sight. As much as I enjoy Criterion releases and the scholarly research that goes into their essays they are usually short but sweet and don't contain a lot of extra stuff like production pics etc. Obviously some of the larger sets have bigger and more elaborate booklets but with some of the other stuff out there these days Criterion certainly aren't the king of the booklet in boutique Blu ray releases any longer.

    • @VanessaButtino
      @VanessaButtino 3 года назад +2

      @@darrenblizzard3851 Indicator is my favourite label at the moment too. Criterion used to be the gold standard - at least for me it was. Their booklets and pamphlets haven't impressed me in a very long time and that's not to say that the essays aren't good, because they are, but their booklets could be so much better (and thicker), especially for the price they charge on some of the blu-rays.

    • @darrenblizzard3851
      @darrenblizzard3851 3 года назад +1

      @@VanessaButtino absolutely. The whole point of having a premium label and spending the money as a collector is to really delve into all the bells and whistles extras you can possibly get, and that goes for having a nice booklet to read as well. I think Indicator really do a great job of consistently doing that and their box sets are on another level again. Their recent Fu Manchu and Columbia Noir v1 sets were incredible. Second Sight are also really adding some nice booklets lately as well. Of course it's nice to read some well researched essays as Criterion provide but I like seeing production info/pics etc thrown in as well. Second Sights recent premium Dawn of the Dead box set isa prime example of what an added book can be (and it literally is a hardcover book!). Obviously the average standard release can't contain such a huge book and I think the average Indicator release gets it about right.

    Nice work as always, Elliot. Always enlightening to hear your thoughts on movies and collecting. As someone who's a bit of a UK Criterion collector, I'm curious about your decision-making process when it comes to picking something to watch. For a great modern Czech film Eureka's release of The Painted Bird is a must. That film is incredible and I can't believe it isn't more widely known and talked about. It also has amazing black and white cinematography and many scenes which look like they could have come out of a 40s film noir. For anyone who hasn't seen it do yourselves a favour and check it out. Just be warned that it's no holds barred in its depiction of war violence and other associated war atrocities (rape etc) so if that sort of thing bothers you then best not to watch it.

    Question related to the one you answered regarding prioritising purchases: There are quite a few (too many?) limited edition releases out there from boutique labels. As any keen observer will know, some fly off the shelves and sell out almost immediately (e.g., the Flash Gordon 4K boxset and Arrow's big Gamera set, both from 2020), whilst others can hang around for a year or more before disappearing. Do you have any tips for deciding which of those kind of new releases are liable to be short-lived on the shelves, or do you simply treat them the same as any other releases?
