Great video. Those rarer ones will always be harder to capture on camera. And yes, red kites do roost together, so spotting them just before dark in that group was a special find. Nice!

Went for the waterthrush, pretty great views though getting a good picture of it was a different story but ended up with some ok photos. Went earlier, the Thursday (the day after it was located).
Edit- there have been a trio of velvets that have wintered at abberton. Giving pretty great views from the church viewpoint.

Brilliant, you have me "hooked" couple... I am also doing the Big Year here in Spain in a more modest way... it is incredible to be able to see the species that you enjoy there in your country... wow that beautiful Smew and the Goldeneyes crazy for not mentioning the Laplands, it must have been brutal even though you don't have images...for me it's the least of it!!.I'm sure you have enjoyed them a lot...an affectionate greeting...and I can't wait to see more!! !

Thats for the lovely message, birding is a challenge sometimes but the rewards are worth it.

I feel your pain regards to the cold at the Waterthrush...I nearly died there of the cold. People were literally turning purple.

    Great videos!
Can I ask where you get your information from? I’m new to birding after getting a camera for Christmas and I’ve ticked off probably 50 or so of the more common birds so I’d like to know of some rare sightings fairly local to me (Solihull).
    Thanks!

Many happy returns! All those eyes and ears at Heybridge and no luck with the bird, probably tucked down out of the bitter wind. You looked freezing back at the car! Love the Waxwing hoodie! Abberton is usually a winter haunt for smew too. Lapland bunting was a great encounter, shame about the camera there! And all those red kites! You are well over a fifth of the way into your target already! I got my first chiffchaff of the year today whilst I was replacing the pull cord on one of my mowers. I should really be getting more birding done!

Hi I spoke to you at the water thrush site, although I didn’t see the bird either (too many people I reckon) I was able to return the following day with less people and the bird put on a great show! Keep up the good work!

    isn't a northern water thrush actually a warbler ?

Good stuff, as ever, thank you. Don't give up on the Waterthrush (which you probably know is a warbler, despite looking like a mini-thrush): as one of the other commenters below has said, it's now given itself up quite easily and I managed to get great footage: ruclips.net/video/qkVaS2Nj3YU/видео.html after some pretty poor and brief views on the Thursday. You will surely get good footage of it if it survives the coming cold. The key seems to be that nobody should stand by the railings just above the sluice at the end of the creek. From my experience the other day, that was its favourite place to feed.
