  • Issa Rae, Tracee Ellis Ross, Leslie Uggams and Erika Alexander have each had prolific careers in television. Now these four women star in the critically acclaimed satire "American Fiction," which last month earned five Oscar nominations. These women from multiple generations in the entertainment industry sat down with "60 Minutes" Correspondent Bill Whitaker to talk about their careers, sisterhood, representation, and a film that allows their characters to be "full people," a rarity, they say, for Black actors.

I want to see more movies where the black characters are deep and fully fleshed out in real everyday situations. I’m asking directors and producers to make more of those. I’m not interested in the stereotypical characters and am hungry to see the nuanced characters we really want to see. I’m white and if directors are aiming their stereotypical depictions of black characters to me, I’m not interested.

I suspect this was because she played a Black domestic worker. Yes, she was working for a Black family, and we all cheered at her wedding, but the domestic who is "part of the family" is an old trope, from Mammy in "Gone With the Wind" down to "Beulah" in 1950s television. The women these women play are all professionals. We don't find out what Leslie Uggams' character did professionally, but she wasn't a Black trope either.
