Back in the day, one of my friends reviewed Fear Effect with the phrase, "It's five minutes of loading screen for every thirty seconds of gameplay," and he was not wrong. The fact the developers were able to make that game work on the PS1 hardware is a testament to ingenuity, but I can't help thinking it would have made a better first-gen PS2 game, if for no other reason than to avoid all the disc swapping and the faster loading speeds off the DVD. :) My favorite 3D brawler is Gekido on the PS1. Such an awesome late-gen release, and criminally overlooked in my opinion, especially considering it offers four-player simultaneous play.
I love this PS1 commercials. It's like a competition of "who can came up with the weridest sh*t?" My favorite 3D brawler is the Dynamite Deka, better known as Die Hard Arcade in the west.
Fighting force is a big favourite of mine, even though I only rented it for 3 days. Yes it wss clunky but it was great fun because i loved beat em ups.
Back when Tomba 2 came out, a PlayStation bus was touring the country giving out lots of swag. They had me beat a level in Crash Bandicoot and my prize was a free demo of an upcoming game. They were surprised when I picked Tomba 2 over the shitty sports games, but dammit! I love platformers!
Limited Run may not be perfect by any means, but they are doing wonders for game preservation, especially for late 90s titles that seem like they'd be unlikely to ever see a comeback otherwise. For my fave 3D brawler... I mean if God of War counts, Devil May Cry does, too, right? Maybe? If not, the answer may actually *be* Fighting Force! I still vividly remember playing the demo with a friend, and is laughing our butts off as we discovered just how many of the background elements were interactive. Top that off with the only other beat em ups I had played at the time being a few Ninja Turtle games, thus not really having the genre fatigue, and that's a recipe for a great time
First and foremost, excellent video, as always. Anytime I read old game reviews, I hear it in your voice, but I digress. As far as these reviews...yes, some of their takes were interesting, but they absolutely walk all over today's so-called modern games "journalists." I would rather read 100's of EGM/GamePro/GameFans/VGCE horrible reviews before attempting to even think about looking at the hacks over at IGN/Polygon/Kotaku. Moving along... far, far away from this landmine of a topic... What is my favorite beat em up or the one I think is best? Well, you're actually asking me two questions, my friend, as I have a best for 2D and one for 3D. The very best 2D belt scroller and my personal favorite would have to be Streets of Rage II. The reason SORII is so good is its crowd control system. If you have the time, look it up and read the history on it. My favorite (or best) 3D belt scrolling beat em up has to Die Hard Arcade (Dynamite Cop 2 is also great). It used a similar crowd control feature and added the one thing all beat em up games were missing...everything was a weapon, including guns. I always found it funny that in all the beat em up games, none of the street gangs had guns, which is strange. Runner up- River City Ransom. It was the first open-ended beat em up that added RPG elements giving it real legs.
QOTD: Anarchy Reigns. In my opinion the first 3D beat-em-up to reach the levels of a Streets of Rage or Final Fight. And it's fantastic. Fighting Force was never close to being as good as Streets of Rage, and playing both the PlayStation and Saturn versions on release I was both disappointed and expectant of the result. (Fighting Force always lacked something when watching video footage, and it's apparent what that is when playing.) Die Hard Arcade was superior but I would classify it as more of a 2D game. As far 2D beat-em-ups of that generation, the very best was Guardian Heroes.
Out of all these games the only one I've actually played was Fighting Force on the N64, and I wasn't THAT enthused by it, what I can recall? I think it's one of those games where I eas okay with it, perfectly serviceable bfawling, but I think I still had SoR or Turtles in Time in memory and the speed of those games, not to mention the SOUNDS, felt so much more engaging and cool to me. I think it's just a sad byproduct of esrly 3D that the games couldn't be as fast and snappy as I liked them to be, or as aesthetically pleasing as SoR of old. I just felt they didn't hit as hard as the brawlers I remember. Though it's gonna be real fun seeing people's reactions to Fighting Gorce 2 which if memory serves me right were MEGA-duds according to the reviews... Still, at least looking forward to finally playing Tomba 2! Played the 1st one back in the day, looking forward to playing it again and finally the sequel. And if GoW counts as a 3D brawler, I'll have to go with.... DMC3. The most engaging game of that style I can remember playing.
Weird how the presence of lesbians in a game get them to use the word "adult" but not the violent games with cursing that came out before it. Tomba 2 is sweet. It's how i'd always wanted platformers of the era to look and really only a few ended up looking like that. Still holds up today. QOTD, Maybe Die Hard arcade. I remember a Dreamcast game called Demolish Fist that i'd probably like more if i played more of it.
Out of these, only one I played was Fear Effect and also played Fear Effect 2, but I'll agree, even though when I was a little girl playing them on dad's old PS1 I enjoyed them, not sure how much they'll hold up today. As for the question, looking at the list on Wikipedia, and guess Hogwarts Legacy doesn't count, even though part of it is fighting with wands, but OK, out of those they listed, only one that stands out I remember enjoying is Star Wars Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith, so I'll say that one. 😉
Way ahead of you, we have a full Bubsy episode going live in a few hours. As for Gex, we covered the trilogy (along with Tomba 1) back when those games were first announced. Check out the video here: ruclips.net/video/gUFARxg1EHc/видео.html
I'm piecing together the Bubsy episode (which will feature Bubsy 1 and 2, the Game Boy game, Jaguar spin-off and 3D), and let me tell you, the reviews are all over the place. You will come away genuinely surprised by a few of the reviews.

14:50 No fighting force 2 reviews? It's 1 and 2 in a collection LRG is doing not just 1.

remember seeing a magazine ad for fear effect as a teen boy haha and good times playing fighting force with my little bro :)
Edge pretty much got it right. It's still worth playing but temper your expectations
