Jack!! Dude, thank you so much! I ordered an RX from Japan and it just arrived. After picking it up I noticed the aperture problem. Your video saved me a lot of trouble. You are great, man, thanks again for this video

Thank you so much for sharing this info in the event that I encounter this on my RX. I purchased one a year ago and I am good so far, I did have to re-set the mirror due to the proverbial CONTAX/Yashica mirror slip, the mirror on the RX is a pelicle mirror BTW, with a hole on the mirror plate that takes some of the light for the DFI.

Reiner Venegas Yes! It’s a pretty cool design. I sadly had to reset my mirror as well, and also had to do it on my Kyocera Dental Eye III (based on the RX)

@@jackwiegmann I still can't believe the crooks that are out there charging an arm and a leg for such an easy fix. Yes, there is actually a sub-mirror behind the mirror carrier plate that directs the light down into the mirror box to a sensor for the DFI. Thanks again bro!

You're a saint, thanks for posting this video and the links to the repair manuals. I have the same problem, but I get the same faulty readout with my 50 1.4 planar on my 3 CONTAX electronic bodies, RX, Aria and RTS3. Wondering if this is not a common Contax problem like mirror slip, or just my Planar... That said, my exposures are all fine, even on aperture priority; it's the numbers in the screen vs the numbers on the lens bothering me.
I really like the Contax slr system and for me these modern cameras are all I need in 35mm. Wish I could do any eventual repairs by myself, but as it is I'm not very technically capable... apparently there are parts and repair shops in Japan.
If you are ever in Hong Kong there is a camera repair shop where all the technicians come from CONTAX, and they can CLA (they did this even on my RTS 1rst generation) and repair electronic model Kyocera cameras. According to them, the electronics in these cameras are super sturdy, and they quoted the RX and RTS3 as the most reliable.

@@jackwiegmann Hey Jack, it is "Camera Repair Centre Ltd" . netshop.hk/myshop/index.php?main_page=index&language=en&zenid=762a9cc6a4a240171d0ad0261e162eb2. Sometimes they don't have the parts necesarry for a repair, but they will still attempt to fix the issue; i.e the clamp which locks the carrying tray for the focusing screen in place on my RX broke (user error while attempting to change screens :/), they figured out a way to fix it without original parts :)

Nicely done. I would only maybe cover the shutter, so a screw doesn't fall on it. But... this video has emboldened me, as my RX is being quite temperamental with loading the film...

Tried this and it works for my 50mm 1.4 now. That's great! But when I mount my 28mm 2.8 it is completely wrong. Note the 28 was wrong before the fix too. I'm puzzled because I would think fixing once for the 1.4 would fix it across other lenses with different f ranges. Anyone else have this happen?

  • @etienneportail5122

Hi Jack, thanks for the video - very useful. Did your camera have a faulty read out on every lens or just on the 50/1.4?
I am asking, because I have a 167mt with a Zeiss 45mm/2.8 (MM) which works great. But the camera shows partially wrong f-stops on my new Zeiss 50/1.4 and 35/2.8 (both AE)..
Would the fix only work for the 50/1.4 and the 45mm would then not be right anymore? Any idea?..

what i just realised after i thought i had the same problem is the following:
using a yashica 50mm f 1.7 lens it showed me 1.4 and i thought wtf, thats the same problem, but how to fix it without the 1.4?
i tried different lenses, for example mounted a 135 lens and after put the 50 back on on it said 1.7 :D made no sense
    after a while i realised:
if you mount it at max aperture of 16 it says 1.4 and if you mount it set to 1.7 in the beginning it stays with 1.7... ridiculous^^ but easy to deal with in that case.

I don't think so, as the "default" testing lens for the system was a 50mm 1.4. A Yashica ML 50 1.4 might work
