I think people have a lot of nostalgia bias for SF1. The lategame bosses are pretty kick ass, but the trek to get there is agonizing. The field battles especially are dreadful and loaded with padding. I think people look back fondly on the circus battle and the dark dragon battle, and conveniently forget the time they had to walk 1-block-per-turn in a bunch of trees for an hour and kill 7 identical goblins in a single file line.
I always fought this battle buy using my whole army as one. Defeat the bats to the east, move north to defeat the dwarfs, north west to defeat the bats and finally east again and draw out the knights before attacking.
Fun fact: if you walk Max over to the ancient gateway or the cabin, enter and leave you'll start the battle on the east like in battle #2. Don't know why you'd want to do that though.
