Looking forward to see your videos as you climb north bound. I live in Manchester and it’s full of canals, hopefully will see places I know on your future films. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Are you planning on moving through the whole of winter, or are you mooring up for most of it???
+SIMON WINDSOR We’re planning on moving, but with the various winter stoppages much slower than we have been. We haven’t gotten a mooring. We will hit Manchester eventually, though it may take a while! M
Monkey Marsh is one of two remaining turf-sided locks on the K & A as you know. The other is Garston. The thing that always made me chuckle about the fortifications built along the K & A at various bridges (Including at Garston as I recall) were the pillboxes. These were intended to be defenses to prevent the Germans from crossing the canal should they ever invade. We often chuckle at these pieces of kit given that a Tiger Tank could cross the canal without using any of the bridges. They might not have supported the 54 tonnes of a fully loaded Tiger.
"The Temperature of the Air on the Bow of the ... Narrowboat Perseverance" Checked out the minimalist music - even the title dovetails perfectly with the sky and the light. There is more to these than first meets the eye.
That's who I was thinking of. I knew the voice, I just couldn't put my finger on it being Brian Blessed, I've no idea why. He's pretty much unforgettable.
Well done on your epic voyage. Brought back some fraught memories of single handing those swing bridges and getting my old cabin cruiser caught on the lip of that scallop lock. Looks like I could be afloat again next week after a much delayed boat build. I expected it in June!
"...those are my juniper bushes..." LOL What a wonderful couple you are, I am so enjoying watching all your vlogs (not yet half way through)... sadly, I am unable to do the same, as much as I would wish to, I'm in a wheelchair now.... but I did have a week narrowboating back in the '80's before my accident, and if I was fit again, I too would live full time on a narrowboat. I am looking forward to the rest of these vlogs, well done, enjoy, keep them coming, a pleasure to see such a happy couple.
Thank you, and thanks for watching. For what it's worth, there are actually a few accessible boats on the Cut, mainly run by charities as rental / trip boats. They tend to be wide beams. Though you'd need some crew for the locks, it might make at least a vacation aboard possible. M
True pros at this now! Congrats! Glad this trip in familiar territory was uneventful and you came through unscathed! Thanks for the beautiful scenery and great conversation.
Another great video, guys ! The slow-mo at the end Is killer . My 10 y/o daughter was having great fun being silly along with your voices during that. In fact, we watched it several times, lol ! You guys seem to really enjoy each other's company. You're just the most adorable couple. Cheers !
I love the way you use time lapses to show so much of your journey. I live near The Cunning Man and regulalry walk sections of the K&A but I've never seen it from the boaters eye vew before.
Thank you. I sometimes worry if I have them set too fast as narrowboating is a very slow mode of transport but they tell the story so well and if I set them slower I wouldn’t be able to include so much. I guess a mix of different speeds is the answer. We really enjoyed our time moored by the Cunning Man, and that whole section of the K&A to be honest. Thanks for watching. Jo
Brilliant High Fiving. You two really make me laugh. Once again, beautiful filming and music. I don't know how you find the time for the editing amongst all the lockery and swing bridgery, but I'm so glad you do. Thanks :-))
Great!!! Michael is SO funny (intelligent humor) my favorite. You guys make a great couple. Also Mike your musical scores are really awesome, good luck on the Thames guys. I think Mike is turning English one day at a time :).
+Carl Cavanagh The sense of humor is me, but Jo chooses the music (I am assured that I have roughly the same musical taste as a near-deaf moose raised entirely within the walls of a cymbal factory’s quality assurance department). As for turning English, cheerio! M
Haha, i thought for sure you were the music guru, nice going Jo. So I'm an Englishman living in Florida (27 years) and your an American living in the UK, do you like the UK? i assume yes at this point. People are a lot different in the UK than American people that's for sure. Love the UK canal's i had an opportunity to spend a week on the Shropshire Union 2 years back with my Dad before he passed last August. Lots of cool memories, and watching you guys is great therapy for me cheers!! can't wait to see more.
+Carl Cavanagh No, she’s definitely the only one with musical taste, though it’s safe to say I’m the better singer. ;-) I do like the UK, very much. It’s definitely got a learning curve, and I’m constantly tripping over cultural references and phrases I’m not aware of, but so far I’ve found it to be friendlier, in a lot of ways, and definitely less politically polarized than the US. The regional accents and sensibilities throw me for a loop, especially when I think how the whole country is basically the size of just California. But yes I do like it, and of course there’s nothing there quite like the canals! Sorry about your dad, but glad this is providing some good reminders! Cheers. M
Thanks mate that's a really nice thing to say, he was an amazing man, and so so generous, I saw him literally give a homeless guy in NYC the shirt off his back. anyway mate onwards and upwards as they say, oh and by the way those Mr Kipplings cakes are the bomb, I really miss those. Most English people love Americans so i think you are going to be alright mate, keep doing what your doing and hopefully the winter isn't too harsh for you guys. I spoke to a mate of mine on FB yesterday and he told me the UK has not had snow for about 7 years, in the Manchester / Rochdale area anyway. have a great night Mike, thanks again.
+Carl Cavanagh Sounds like a great guy! I think there’s been snow, but it’s been lighter than usual. Nobody seems to be expecting a particularly harsh winter, so hopefully it’s bearable. If not, MORE Mr. Kipling! M
OK it is almost 2.00 am (cet), i have just binge watched your first 30 vlogs ........ i need sleep ........ juniper bushes, Micheal make gin! Love the channel
i was gonna say Jo has walked all the way from Bath, i'll be in Reading next week. lol, missed you. oh and in my fridge is a ritter sport marzipan and a strawberry yoghurt....... he's not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy.
+darren slater A very naughty boy! She won’t watch it, unless she can find some romantic comedy or something I’d never voluntarily watch as some sort of twisted quid pro quo! M
Speaking of poonut butter, I had a dog I'll call Rocky, (name changed to protect her reputation) and she seemed to absolutely love what I called "Tootsie Rolls". My backyard had a sandbox. I don't know if this is common knowledge or not, but sandboxes make wonderful giant kitty toilets. ( Starting to taste the mental image yet? ) Anyhow, the first time I noticed anything odd was when "Rocky" came in the house tail a waggen' and doing exactly what a human would do if he or she had a piece of hard candy in their mouth. You know, suck on it a bit, roll it around, move it to the other side of your mouth to gain maximum tongue exposure, suck on it some more, repeat, etc. Well I got hold of her, opened her mouth up and pulled out this hard foreign object. Upon closer inspection, I ascertained that said object was indeed a dried up cat turd. Rocky was savoring this tasty morsel as if it was her favorite delicacy. I tore down the sand box that weekend.....
George is a trip and a cutie- he's got loads of personality specifics... Mr.& Mrs.Murphy, Pro.? I will pray for your safe, uneventful passage in the upcoming days!!! Yeah, looks like you two are out of the newbie phase-you're now my favorite Professional Narrowboat Operators- almost!! Ly. You went too far with the slomo - 3 to 5 seconds worth would have been plenty.
Great videos guys! Well tip for oxford canal good walk for dog near pigeon lock near Tackley look for the old quarry. Also Thrupp has a great tea room Annie’s. Went there today it was very full being half term but great cream teas!
Great film, great music, great fun. You are really owning this space now. On the subject of bikes - a folding bike would lend itself best to a narrowboat- methinks.👍😀
+Norman Boyes I used to have a Brompton, and I loved it, though I looked like one of those clown bears in a circus riding a children's bike! But yes a folder could be good! M
Another very entertaining video. How did I know that you'd be high fiving it at the end. Although I think Michael was being a bit of a Biggus, hope he didn't hurt you too much. Thanks guys.
Great vid as ever. Just a quick note on day trippers hiring boats and being a nuisance. I work for a place that hires these boats and others. I do all the inductions and walk around of the boat prior to their day out, normally 30 min for day trippers and up to an hour on short break boats. No matter what I tell them, many folks will do their own thing and ultimately have issues. Also as so many do no prep for their time afloat it’s hardly surprising that more accidents don’t happen. We do our best to send safe boats out however once out of sight we can’t be accountable, one reason why we charge large deposits for certain groups of hirers. Most day trippers are fine, just as ever a few spoil it for the rest.
+Dan on the cut I absolutely believe there are lots of good hire companies being as responsible as possible with their practices. Then there are a couple - who will not be named - who seem to send people out with nothing but “ere’s your tiller, point it where you don’t wanna go, now watch this five minute video” and send people out who are paying a lot of money for a vacation utterly unprepared and rapidly overwhelmed. Somewhere along the line one of these boats is going to get out of sight, kill everyone on board, or everyone on another boat, and the government will swoop in and sort out what should have been done a long time ago, which is require licensing. It’ll take a disaster to get it right, but with at least some companies the disaster is well overdue: one day hire boat we got passed by a month or so ago - at full tilt and nearly sinking - didn’t have a single person on board who wasn’t obviously well-past drunk, and they were just five minutes off the pontoons, so they were that pissed while they were going through their inductions. I seriously wish everyone took as much care as you no doubt do, but it sure doesn’t appear to be the norm at some outfits. M
Minimal List Have to be careful as not to rubbish other companies here. The inductions I do don’t go down too well with some, experienced boaters being the worse. I make a point of telling folks it’s something I legally have to do, I have a care of duty and they will go through it regardless and sign to say so. There is no way I’m letting a new hirer in a 71 foot boat let loose on the canals and rivers without knowing Ive done all I can do to help. What I do find hard to comprehend though, is that by and large so many folks do sod all preparation. So between no prep and not listening to me they tend to do their own thing. However not all bad. Large party groups always have equally large deposits to pay and read the riot act even before loading up. Many do lose deposits and we have taken boats of hirers, so don’t think they all get away with it👍 This isn’t all about creating a good company image as it’s as much keeping the beautiful canals in our patch a lovely place to be cruising in. Any hoo has that potato cooked yet?
+Dan on the cut I'm just glad there are people out there who are more diligent... we've seen so many people in the last few months who are basically in tears, half way through their expensive holiday, having made it nowhere near where they wanted to go, simply because they haven't had anything more than a quick run around from a spotty kid and a generic video that barely relates to what they actually encounter on the cut! The bad companies sort of out themselves, it seems, though I'm not pointing specific fingers either. The potato never did get cooked, though it did start to get ripe! M
Hi guys, question, can you tell me,,is most of the furniture situated in the cabin of a narrowboat,,secured to the floor boards, Because the movement of the boat, when moored up,or cruising the canal,if so,is it secured for the safety of the occupants,
Well yes and no... in our boat several pieces of the furniture are built in place, for instance the bed and the Pullman’s dinette, but not so much for security’s sake as they’re big enough that they need to be assembled indoors and don’t have much call to move anyway. My desk and chair aren’t fixed to anything, nor is anything else. The fact is there’s just not that much movement in a boat, though small things do get flung off of flat surfaces occasionally. M
+Kevin Roberts Thanks! Our plan is to move up the Oxford (now we're on it) and keep moving as much as possible over the winter, then next year on to the far north! M
Seeing the way you are dressed I am concerned that when the weather gets really cold you are just going to hibernate inside with the stove. A commitment to tough it out and continue crusing through the winter would be very welcome.
so I am really starting to have a hard time you are not recording all your commentary around 4:20 in the afternoon. But those last 2 minutes. May be the reason George is afraid to go on the boat :P That was just freaky. Not sure how you 2 are gonna top that ending
+London Boat Girl Actually Jo seems to have gotten virtually all the chocolate since, though she does occasionally share. I think I’m keeping Ritter in business on her behalf! M
+Maxboon Boon We probably will, there’s just a surprising lack of bicycle shops close to the canals. Quite a lot of bicycles in the canals, but they’re mainly rust! M
Nothing wrong with your faces (as I can see) but when you do all these "talkshows" can't you show us more of what George is doing along the day's and towpath's
Really love the slow-mo outtakes. Just too funny.
Ahhhhh..... The seal noises at the end were priceless!
Heh, the days when we messed around too much with slow mo! M
K&A DONE!!! 👍🏼 👍🏼 summer has come and gone soooo fast.
Funny finish thanks 👌😬
+SIMON WINDSOR Yup! Now to find time to do our review video! M
Looking forward to see your videos as you climb north bound. I live in Manchester and it’s full of canals, hopefully will see places I know on your future films. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Outakes=Tears. Rolling down my face. What a great release of laughter medicine. I enjoy the fun and hijinks you share with each other(and with us)!
Glad we brought a few laughs!
Love it. Collision followed by Meh. Good chuckle.
Haha! What other reaction is appropriate?

"The Temperature of the Air on the Bow of the ... Narrowboat Perseverance" Checked out the minimalist music - even the title dovetails perfectly with the sky and the light. There is more to these than first meets the eye.
Glad you like them! And yep, they’re the Transformers of narrowboat videos! M
I don't know the Transformers. This is more like Everest ruclips.net/video/vhgfzEm3CWU/видео.html
Bless you
Thank you! M
You turn into Brian Blessed from time to time. Hugely entertaining
That's who I was thinking of. I knew the voice, I just couldn't put my finger on it being Brian Blessed, I've no idea why. He's pretty much unforgettable.

Great vlog guys, and the music was the best so far. The slow-mo was inspired!
+Paul Taylor Thanks! M
Agreed
Well done on your epic voyage. Brought back some fraught memories of single handing those swing bridges and getting my old cabin cruiser caught on the lip of that scallop lock. Looks like I could be afloat again next week after a much delayed boat build. I expected it in June!

+jean405 He’s pretty funny in slow motion too! Gotta shoot more of that. M
M&M's with peanuts. The last 3 minutes are real good under some micro dot.

Ahh, the life of a dog owner! What I find hilarious is the look of shock on their faces when you take their new treat away! M

Seeing the way you are dressed I am concerned that when the weather gets really cold you are just going to hibernate inside with the stove. A commitment to tough it out and continue crusing through the winter would be very welcome.
+320ifq lucas Cruising is the plan, though there will be some short hibernation spells unless we find a source of better winter clothes! M
great thumb nail
+ThisNarrowboatAdventure Jo did a great job with that one! M
Michael, when you HiFive, just hold your hand still and let Joe set the impact!
That's no fun! M
His was not a high five, more like halfway
Is a bike for the tow path in the future? Too much to bother with? We've finally started hitting the 50's here in the Ky and I'm thrilled
+Lee Bruner There probably will be one sooner or later, we can definitely see the need coming! M
Have you two been supping the canal water again??.
so I am really starting to have a hard time you are not recording all your commentary around 4:20 in the afternoon. But those last 2 minutes. May be the reason George is afraid to go on the boat :P That was just freaky. Not sure how you 2 are gonna top that ending
+Fred Fish In my mind we needed this Top Gun style high five... it went off the rails a bit. ;-) M
Loving the pissyness. :)
I thought you were quoting Joyce Grenfell more than Monty Python "Now what's that in your mouth? George, don't do that."
+James Coxall Only by accident I'm afraid. M
Is the baked potato cooked yet?
+Michael Odling Not the original one, no. M
I hope Michael got loads of chocolate after his bump to the head
+London Boat Girl Actually Jo seems to have gotten virtually all the chocolate since, though she does occasionally share. I think I’m keeping Ritter in business on her behalf! M
I'm beginning to feel quite attached to the pair of you. Cheers
+Diana B Thanks! M
19:00 or so .....the new name of this channel is.........stoners list
you walk for miles why dont get a mountain bike?
+Maxboon Boon We probably will, there’s just a surprising lack of bicycle shops close to the canals. Quite a lot of bicycles in the canals, but they’re mainly rust! M
ooh hahahaha
Nothing wrong with your faces (as I can see) but when you do all these "talkshows" can't you show us more of what George is doing along the day's and towpath's
The problem is getting shots of him in the moment and when he’s not doing something that can’t be broadcast! M
