Indiana Harbor - See Why NOT to Follow a 1000-Footer!

- Here is the Indiana Harbor making her second entrance into Duluth, Minnesota on the evening of June 4, 2023. She had initially arrived earlier that morning, originally scheduled to load taconite at the CN dock. However, as she waited for her turn to load, her orders changed to load coal at the SMET dock. Before she could do so, she needed to head back onto Lake Superior to clean out her cargo holds... as any non-toxic dry taconite residue needs to be cleaned out at least 3 miles from the Duluth shoreline. That departure was covered in a previous video on this channel. After about four hours on the lake, she made her way back into Duluth for a second time... arriving as light was quickly fading for the evening. She would then need to wait a couple more hours in the harbor while her fleet mate the American Integrity finished taking on her own load of coal.
Fortunately, the Indiana Harbor's crew will still happy enough to give up a nice captain's salute on the way in... with the bridge willing to reply. It was nearly the end of a very long day for the Indiana Harbor and the bridge operator... not to mention the guy with a video camera... but it was still a pleasure to watch a giant move through the canal.
It was less of a joy for the private boat that decided to follow the Indiana Harbor through the canal, however. While there were no big waves in the wake of the Indiana Harbor, there was plenty of turbulence in the water. The private craft bobbed and weaved back and forth, fighting the restless current stirred up by the 1000-footer's dual propellers. I missed catching some of the more violent rolls the private vessel made before I could refocus my camera on her. At one point it looked like she might capsize in the wake. But once they got out of the worst of the turbulence, they sailed on smoothly again. Clearly wake turbulence is not just limited to large jetliners!
The 1000-foot Indiana Harbor was launched in March 1979, making her the ninth 1000-footer on the Great Lakes (out of 13 total). She is powered by four GM V-20-cylinder 3,500 horsepower diesel engines, giving her a service speed of 14 knots. Her seven cargo holds are accessed by 37 hatch covers. She has a maximum cargo capacity of 80,900 tons. Her self-unloading system consists of a loop conveyor that carries cargo up to her 250-foot self-unloading boom. She can discharge up to 10,000 tons per hour. She sails for the American Steamship Company.

Lesson learned, made for an INTERESTING end to your excellent video!
Needless to say the boat incident was the exciting part of this video. But from 4:26 point to the end pulled at my heart strings. Twilight time with the collage of tall thunderhead clouds,and the soft glow of lights from the ship, the pier and the city. And that long view down the pier as the day comes to an end. Just beautiful and oh so peaceful.. thanks.

THAT IS NOT A BIG DEAL-that shippy little motor yacht is of substantial design and construction and built to handle heavier seas of up to at least 6'..
Sure, they handled it okay, but another vessel might have not dealt with the turbulent wake as well.
NO JOKE-and it’s up to the boat’s “Captain” to make those decisions and act appropriately--IT’S CALLED SEAMANSHIP--do you go driving in any conditions at all-or decide according to your vehicle and your capabilities as a driver
The point was to illustrate how the wake of a 1000-footer can toss around a smaller boat. Nothing more, nothing less. I wasn’t questioning the seamanship of anyone.

Bit of a wild ride for that private boat. One of those "whoops!" moments that ended well.
I well remember going up the Great Lakes on cargo ships when I was young, when the seaway had just opened. They were magic voyages! Cheers from Australia.

Another great video to watch and hopefully a lesson learned for the Captain of that boat. Could’ve ended a lot differently had another scenario played out.
Fortunately, rescue services are close by. But that doesn’t help if you go under and can’t get out.
Another great video! I would bet it is a good idea to stay well back of any laker or saltie traveling through the canal.
Yeah, the only trouble is that the bridge is anxious to come down after a freighter passes, so if you stay too far back they might not wait. Perhaps better to time one’s canal passage on the regular half hour lift when freighters aren’t passing. Having said that, most boats seem to handle the turbulence better than this little one did. I missed some of the more severe dips and weaves, unfortunately.
And that's why you stay back, like way way way way back from these giant thousand foot Great Lakes ships!!!

Thank you! As far as I'm aware, all of the freighters that work the Great Lakes are capable of fitting under the Lift Bridge. The videos sometimes make it appear that it's a tight fit, but most clear with plenty of room to spare.

I never thought about the amount of wake turbulence that a large ship would create, but it makes sense for the amount of water they displace. I always find it amusing to see the amount of seagulls that know to gather around the stern of these large ships to get a free meal. Another nice catch by you with interesting info.... thank you.
The seagulls must also use the MarineTraffic app to follow the shipping activity. 😁

I’d feel safer behind that freighter than in front of it.
It's nearly the same as the wake of a jet. As a pilot you're taught to avoid following another aircraft at all costs. It'll flip you over in a heartbeat, worse yet set you in a spin. I still can't understand why the bow of these aren't more hydrodynamic, no bulbous bows. Very few I've seen have them and it doesn't seem to be a matter of when they were made but by who. In the air, design is accepted and almost immediately implemented when it improves efficiency and saves lives, hence the horizontal wing stabilizers on nearly every new aircraft. They work.
It seems they place more emphasis on cargo capacity than hydrodynamics. Also, it should be remembered that the youngest of the 1000-footers is 42 years old. Still, some of the newer 740-footers retain the rounded bow design, probably to maximize the haul through the Welland Canal and St. Lawrence Seaway.
Why didn't the sailboat dart across in front of the vessel like they normally do?

Having grown up near Wilmington, DE, and boated on and around the Delaware River and Bay, I found it amusing that the ship is registered in Wilmington, but would never see those waters.
There are quite a few Great Lakes ships registered in Wilmington. Popular place! 😆
Really no reason for small boats to be in canal, it could be a tragedy in progress and would hate to see that happen with the joy and purpose of the freighters fo those of us watching
"Small boats"?, That was a 36 footer and how else is he to come and go? His timing and judgement was off, but that's about it. All Captains are guilty of it at one point, regardless of vessel size. I'd have idled down and enjoyed the free ride.
He probably felt a little pressure to get his boat in quickly to let the bridge come back down. The bridge was already in the raised position for about 10-15 minutes by the time the Indiana Harbor came through. The bridge operator likes to come down quickly after a freighter passes to allow road traffic to flow again. It might have been best to just chill on the lake until the next lift on the half hour. But it’s easy to criticize from a comfortable chair. 🙂

It’s an unusual boat for Duluth. Not a sailboat but also not one of the charter fishing boats. I noticed it has its own dingy on top.
it looks like a custom job. like someone took a sailboat hull and converted it to a cabin cruiser. if thats the case, no need to worry about stability, it probably CANT roll over if keel is still in place. its hard to get a blowdown in 30 kt gusts with poor sail trim, it would be next to impossible in the same hull without the rig up top

that little boat is adorable. anyone know what kind of boat that is? it looks like a sailboat hull, i see a lot of them like that down here along the gulf coast. I guess someone could convert them to motorboats, take all the rigging off, put a bigger engine and fuel tankage in there and call it a day. lol

That big beast really responded to the helm when a turn to port was required. Got to be some thrusters because all of a sudden the back of the boat starts moving sideways.
It's as if clowns refuse to know the subject mater before running their mouth. There are no "thrusters" on that vessel.
@@Look_What_You_DidYou should get your facts straight. If you didn't notice the ship has prop markings painted on the sides near the bow and Stern. These markings are to alert other vessels to stay clear of the prop wash.

They have prioritized cargo capacity over reduced drag. The ships are designed to make the most of the size limit afforded by the Soo Locks.

That small boat was being tossed around by the turbulence stirred up by the 1000 footer. I saw a couple of times where the boat came close to rolling over. I definitely wouldn't want to be on it while that happened.

I guess I don’t get why not to follow a 1000 footer in. If it was because of the small boat that followed her in, that boat was never in any danger at all. It was never once in any danger or operating outside of any safety parameters. I get so tired of the click bait titles people use to try and get viewers. I used to have more respect for this channel.
