This isn't really in defense of the online mode but i will say from at least my personal experience when you're connected to someone with ping like below 110 with you things actually work pretty ok.
Its really hit or miss, I'll sort games by ping and have the absolute worst session and then for whatever reason I'll quick join one with perfect sync. I can see why BTZ wont be implemented anytime soon considering how shotty it is rn
