  • Thanks for watching! Please rate & comment. Then check out my channel & subscribe for more DIY auto repair videos. This is a quick video I made while modifying a Ford Explorer rear differential to make it fit a 1952 Ford truck. I didn't have the truck at my shop, but the truck's owner told me the spring perches needed to be 37 inches from center to center with no pinion angle change. I hope you enjoy watching this video. I enjoyed taking a break from auto repair to finally do some more customizing.

    @DucsUnlimited That depends on multiple factors. What kind of C-notch you use, how much you weld & where, how good you weld, how hot you get it, how long you let it cool between welds, what kind of welder- gas, MIG, TIG, wire feed with flux cored wire, etc. Check out the welded in C-notches on one of my other videos, "Toyota C Notched with air bags".

    When you lined up the perch on the Axle tube , was the line dead center in the middle of the perch? Or do you place it to the left or right

    Did you check for warpage on the axle tube after welding?

    When welding perches on with continuous beads, do you have issues with the axle tubes warping from the localized welding heat?

    How would I go about figuring out the angle for my axle that has no spring perches on it?

  • @JJ-wp5yn
    @JJ-wp5yn 8 лет назад

    +Robert Jones, that's most likely 3/8ths thick axle tubing, so as long as he's not running too hot there should be no little to no burn through at all.

    if your putting it in a different vehicle shouldn't you have put it under vehicle to set both spring perches to correct pinion angle for vehicle its going under ??

    • @roadragecustoms
      @roadragecustoms  6 лет назад +2

      Justsoflo yes. I had a similar conversation with the owner of the truck when he brought me the differential. He wanted the new ones on the same plane as the old ones and understood that if he was wrong, he may need shims.

    I go a chevy silverado 4x4 with a worn out raer pinion and ring gear. Can i use the front ring and pinion geat for the rear diffetential? I never use 4x4 anyway.

    • @roadragecustoms
      @roadragecustoms  6 лет назад

      Jessie Africa no. The front ring & pinion will not work in the rear diff. For a very temporary fix, I did this once for a friend. I removed the rear ring gear, and put the transfer case in 4 wheel high. This made the truck front wheel drive. Did I emphasize TEMPORARY?

    • @jessieafrica9402
      @jessieafrica9402 6 лет назад

      Thhanks for the reply! However if i can't able to fix it right away how temporary is temporary? Can i use my truck at no load for qjuite sometime?

    • @roadragecustoms
      @roadragecustoms  6 лет назад

      When I did it for a friend, it was so he could make it home. One trip. He kept driving for weeks until he wrecked it. I would not recommend this temporary fix for multiple trips.

      Preston Edmonds I really don't remember where I bought those. It was over 7 years ago. I know tractor supply sells some perches, and I believe Mopar parts depts have some nice ones. Otherwise may have to Google it.

    Good morning. I was looking for a video for this exact job. I was told that the rear axle can't or shouldn't be welded because it will make it brittle. I want to move the perch on a 1983 Jimmy. Are some axles made of weldable material and others not? I sure could use some help. I subbed your channel so I can learn more about welding and other car things. Drop around to my channel to see what is happening. Thanks for sharing.👍👍🍁

      People weld on rear axle housings all the time.

    • @AndysDogHouse
      @AndysDogHouse 4 года назад

      @@roadragecustoms Wow. I wonder why people say don't weld it? It was welded in the first place. Thanks. I will still be watching your videos for other info.

    • @roadragecustoms
      @roadragecustoms  4 года назад

      Most likely, the people who first started saying not to weld them were profiting from the sale of new ones. Either that, or they were thinking of a solid, cast front axle on a 4x2.

    • @AndysDogHouse
      @AndysDogHouse 4 года назад

      @@roadragecustoms Well, I am going by what you say. I am welding mine up tonight or tomorrow morning. Now my welds are not like yours, but they will stick 2 pieces together. I am new to all of this and I am learning as I go. Stay tuned for an update on my rear axle. 👍🍺
