Preventing lorikeet deaths The best way to prevent lorikeet deaths is to stop feeding the birds altogether. The only feeding method we recommend is to plant a variety of flowering native shrubs, such as grevilleas, callistemon (bottlebrushes) and banksias around your garden. These plants not only look good; they also provide safe, healthy food for blossom-feeding birds such as lorikeets and honeyeaters.
l have a recued lorri her name is Merlyn the fact that she talked saved her life. 2 interested cats had her corner in a shed and owner of the cats could hear someone say "hello Hello" and she saved her, took her to our vet. l was called and asked if l would take her, they knew l wouldnt say no. so glad l have her here, she is wonderful company when lm on my own,
I have a wild pair that have been visiting me for a few years now. I see them in the tree each morning and they come down to my balcony when I come out of the bedroom. If I don't show up on time, the male comes down and gives me a persistent call. I give them a bit of food and they hang out chatting with each other and keeping a lookout. They are really so lovely. I call them Mulder and Scully. I went a few months without feeding them and they still came back. Love those little guys.
Poppy is very beautiful. What a display of color ! A living rainbow. She doesn't show how she plays with her plastic balls. But just to see her hoping around on the top of the cage can't be less admired.
Freeman, Redpath.. You gaurd that lorikeet with your Life. From a a young man who worked with you in Ipswich Pre loved, and Parisian Ill never forget that bird.
Everyone here please stop complaining about her wings being clipped. It is a good way to manage birds kept in a large room or outside cages and aviaries. It doesnt cause Poppy any harm so why dont we all just enjoy this cute little clown, hm? P.s. Love ur birdie!!
Its not necessary to clip the wings,I hav 1 myself,it will stay by you, even outside he is staying on my shoulders, they are very loyal and protective..,and very sweet, only the pooing : )
Its just cruel to the bird. If the owner is afraid of having a bird without wings, he should have no birds at all. Imagine having your hands cut so you cannot escape. Yeah well, your hands are growing again, so you surely dont mind I cut them for the time being? You belong to me, its my choice. (Yes, human hands dont grow again, just to illustrate how cruel it is to the bird.) Cut wings lead to injuries due to inability to fly, to deformed bones, weak muscles, etc.
I rescued a rainbow lori with runners disease, a viral illness that affects feathers. The disease is suppressed by vitamins but would kill her in the wild. She is my first bird in 35 years. She's very smart. Her favourite word is "stop it". Interactions with our pet whippet are hilarious. He is lovely and won't hurt her although does get jealous and barks, cries and snaps at her tail.
I will testify that rainbow lorikeets are wonderful parrots I had one named Ricky that I adopted from a bird store he was roughly 9 to 11 years old somebody else had him and could no longer take care of him and he adapt to me quickly he loved his purple wiffle ball just like this one. Extremely intelligent and boy do they have strong claws their muscles in their hands are probably one of the strongest for that size parrot and the beak is strong as well. Ricky taught himself a trick because I certainly didn't he would pick a paper plate off the floor and get underneath and Roll It on its Edge all way across the floor he learn that all on his own
for those who are wondering about lorikeets hopping, this is totally natural and you cannot stop them from doing this. i was told that the rainbow lorikeets and red collared lorikeets are the fastest hoping bird known.
I agree totally. And they should never be alone. Parrots are extremely social and getting one parrot to sit alone in a cage all day while you are at work is enough to drive them insane. It's very sad.
Wolf Jari your unlucky not being able to see the rainbow lorikeets in the wild, I have a pet rainbow lorikeet that I rescued some time back she is the most smartest pet bird I that I have had
@@brentonthorogood5799 D'aww. Yea, there is something more magical about seeing any animal in the wild. Even if it's something more mundane (for me at least), like a squirrel or rabbit.
Many people have taken to encouraging lorikeets into their gardens by giving them foods usually based on sugar, honey or jam. However, it is this very act of 'kindness' that can cause the death of lorikeets at an unnaturally early age.
I have a lorrie as well his name is barney and he gives us no end of pleasure, these birds are great company and I wouldn' t be without him. I have had barney since he was 6 weeks old and on september 4th this year he will be 16 years old
Oh really? I've got a couple that visit me daily and land on my hand and eat bread with Honey or Jam. Don't tell me I'll have to be doing this for 16 years or more I didn't think Patma and Bugsy would be around for that long.
He flew away while I was trying to take him out of the cage to clip his wings and wash his cage. Can't believe that was almost 10 years ago... felt like it was yesterday. But since I'm busy with college I don't have as much feel time as I'd like so I suppose it was for the better.
Beautiful bird...I have wild ones out in the garden at the moment...Wing clipping does no harm but flying around the house unclipped smashing into walls and doors will!
@@firstnamelastname4778 Ironic how people even own birds in cages and live in cities and such but as soon as someone safely finds a way to avoid potential injuries caused by a human environnent its cruelty.
I taught all my rainbow lorikeet's to do the gurgling noise by pouring glass's of water right next to them, the sound is quite similar and the pick it up quickly.
I have never owned a Lorikeet, but once knew some folks who did. I have two stories I like to tell on him. First, when wanting out of his cage he would bounce up and down, muttering shit, shit, shit, shit, shit. Secondly, they once bought him a girlfriend. He tolerated her but was not enthralled with her. One time when we were visiting, they gave her a cookie, which she sat down in the nearest dish for nibbling. He then ran over, snatched up her cookie, ran back to to his dish, turned to her and said, "Bitch"!
I recently have this kind of bird. It's really loyal to the owner. And has a great bond with the person who interacts with them. Don't get them caged for too long. It will create depression for the bird. Should take it regularly and play with them and everything should be fine

I didn't know they could talk either, that's so cute. I live close to the Gold Coast in Qld and these guys fly to where I live to eat the bottle brush. They sure are noisy chattering to each other in their own bird language but very pretty to look at.
Fallon Turnboo rainbow lorikeets eat a variety of different foods. Twice a day (morning & afternoon) Poppy is given a lorikeet nectar, which is a dry powder I purchase from the pet store combined with water, as her main source of food. Alongside that, I keep a small container of the dry powder in her cage and everyday I cut up some fresh fruit and vegetables. Occasionally, I'll find some eucalyptus branches or some native flowering plants (like grevillia, bottle brush, lilly pilly, banksia) which she loves to lick the honey out of. The more time you have to spend with them, the better, especially when they're babies. As long as you spend a little bit of time with them each day and give them plenty of toys in their cage to play with lorikeets are generally quite happy.

They really do make an amazing pet with heaps of character.
Birds are not "pets". You are a warden and they are your amputated prisoners. Your jail house is ugly and that bird hates you.
