I've toured the globe and recorded with grammy winning artists Amy Winehouse, Burning Spear, Eryka Badu, Snoop..Dead Prez, and others...and do a lot of studio work....and local gigs around NYC in a variety of settings from jazz to roots reggae, to hip hop to latin....and the Squire basses have been added to my arsenal. Coming across your video's, you really helped convince me Squire's aren't laughable joke instruments. Other first call cats I know have them in their arsenal, Andy Bassford, guitarist comes to mind. So thank you for the reassurances brotha Tyler. I scooped up the P bass in this review, and the mustang, and the 60's version this Covid season. Love them all. Flats on all of them. Only modification was swapping out the pickup on the 60's P bass. Keep up the great work.
I've had this on Butterscotch Blonde for over 8 years now, I sold my Musicman and kept this. It is my only bass and when touring is available I will get another one for back-up
@the3-dkiller1 I added a Seymour Duncan 1/4 pounder (improved lows), and a DiMarzio Will Power Neck for further tonal options. If you're interested look up Monte Meteoro's Liberar or Luna Viva, I use the Seymour on those two tracks

The problem with this model of bass is that you don’t have many options. You can either get the Squier or a Fender Custom Shop model. Fender Japan also make one with a basswood body but there is no ordinary American Fender equivalent to this. This bass has a great tone and an important place in history. Fender are missing a trick.
I have an early (1990) Made in Japan Fender ‘51 RI and the body is ash and the neck is maple. Nowadays there is also a new US made version of this bass called American Vintage II ‘54 P bass.
Yea there's no middle ground for the '51 precision bass, you can either get the squier classic vibe or the most expensive fender type. Tho the squier classic vibe series wre very good built instrument but some people just want to display the Fender brand on it.
I love that the tone of this bass even comes through nicely on my cellphone's speaker which means it must have some upper mids in its sound that other basses lack. It's the first bass I've heard in a long time that's made me want to buy it.
Finally someone that actually REVIEWS equipment and gives some background detail not just “here’s a bit of kit, let’s play it, link in the description”. There’s no chance I can afford a fender tele bass anytime soon, thinking this will have to do for now with an upgraded bridge(for some added sustain) and maybe a pickup cause I’m totally digging the look and neck shape.
low to 0 tone sounds the best to me, it was pretty much the P bass sound ive been looking for and this bass is half the price of the other fender I was looking at so I definitely will consider, thank you
I bought one of these this afternoon. I tried a few squires, as soon as I plugged this in, I knew. Beautiful looking and I love the sound. Hitting the stage this weekend with it for the first time in too long.
I bought one in the sunburst and I am impressed with it. I made mine look more original by adding original Fender chrome pickup and bridge covers. At first I thought they would not fit correctly but they fit perfect with no alterations When you get one new, be sure to take off the clear plastic on the scratchguard, Easy to do, just loosen the srews a bit and peel it off. If you leave the clear plastic on it will yellow the white over time.
I have an older version of this bass, made in 2010 in Lake Placid Blue. Back then the bridge was a bit beefier, like a high mass bridge but with traditional saddles. The pickup has great tones, although not super high output. The neck is chunky, much more so than my MIM Standard P-bass.
Thanks for sharing! I'm all for the chunky 50s feel - agree on the output, but that's also probably fairly reverent to the original design. I remember them in lake placid - they looked great. I'm a sucker for that colour! T
It did for me too. Thicker, punchier, it’s those big exposed pole pieces. I was impressed and would probably add a single coil P at some point to my collection! T
Tyler, I have AB’d the scpb pickup against the Jazz bass neck pickup soloed, and the scpb is clearly the better of the two (I have both). Aside from the pole pieces being directly under the strings the pickup itself is further up towards the neck. The result is not just more beef, but more responsive as well. I’d prefer a cover of some sort for the pup because it’s rather exposed. ZZ Tops “cheap sunglasses” is a good example of the scpb for those unfamiliar with it.
@@trappenweisseguy27You are so right. Mine has both covers and I play it by anchoring my right hand thumb at the end of the neck. I also play in the area between both covers depending on the sound I want. It is not a good idea to play without a cover and anchor your right hand thumb on top of the pickup. These have no cover and are just the exposed bobbin; the cover protects it from even the 1st or 4th string getting snagged under the top of the bobbin.
@vayabroder729, I haven’t really looked into it but I’m fairly confident that a standard Strat pickup empty shell will work with the size and shape of this pickup. I anchor my thumb on the E and move it up to rest on the body when playing on the E.
I buy this bass yesterday, swap the bridge for a high mass bridge (fender) and change the pickup for the antiquity 50’ seymour duncan. This bass Stock Sounds awesome, but now is so much better 👌🏻😏
The Single Coil P-bass is a Secret weapon that has fallen under the radar. It does what everyone with a split coil pbass tries to get with hot pickups but better. Just listen to that thick cut thru with a pick and tone rolled all the way off..
I picked one of these up second-hand just to have a bass around ( I play guitar) and I was truly impressed. The fit, finish and playability are wonderful. I originally shopped for a real P-bass second hand and just couldn't bring myself to plunk down the money.
That little bar by the strings is a handhold for bass players who play with their thumb. I previously owned 60's Jazz Bass, Mustang Bass and Gibson EB-O which had a handhold and I frequently played with my thumb.

I have been looking at a few different CV’s , 70’s Jaguar, 50’s P bass, 60’s precision, Sire P bass, and Glen Hughes Orange Purple Gibson stylish body Precision bass.? My wife liked the fifties Precision best overall. I have been on the fence about these basses. But mostly the P-bass.
nice review, I would love to see a sound demo with the tone up until 70 or 80 percent. I think that would be a broader picture to analyse. still pretty cool demo. thank you!
I know what you mean as that’s where I quite often run my basses. Difficult to do a whole range of tone variations in this format without it becoming a 40 minute video! Glad you still liked it though! T

Nice review. I have a Fender CIJ 51 style with a Bare Knuckle 51 single coil in, and although it's one of the greatest aftermarket you could possibly use, that single coil design and single magnet per string has some peculiarities which give it character but you need to know: first, IME, they're more reliant on compression to glue with the mix, and I think it shows also in the video. Moreover, because of the narrower magnetic window, you can get a drop in volume if you bend your strings on higher frets. Last, it's placed on the body right under the 4th fret harmonics, so they are rather silent - no "Continuum". If you want to address the first two points, I recommend the SCPB3, Duncan's Quarter Pounder single coil P, though you get a slightly more modern tone character, which you might not want.

This one was to expensive for me, so i bought a Harley Benton PB50VT instead. Some work and swapping out some parts. After that = Killer bass! Price difference = 1. Epiphone 50s. or 4. Harley Benton PB50VT
So, interesting- Fender's site does not have the maple fingerboard as an option right now, but it is still available on dealer sites like Sweetwater, Guitar Center (US) and Musician's Friend.

@@TylerSpicer the GOTOH Res-o-lite tuners are great. Smooth and tension adjustable. The plates are flat on the bottom. No rivets going through the plate so they don't bend when you screw them in. They cleanly mount flush on the back of the headstock. The larger plate size can be an issue with some Squier headstocks but they just fit the Tele style. You can use the existing ferrules as the GOTOH post is the same size. Some people might wonder about a almost $100 set of tuners on a $400 bass but if it makes an improvement, which IMO it does then it's money well spent.
I liked that bass. You know, it's funny, whenever I see a bass that looks like that, I think of Dusty Hill from ZZ Top back in the 70's .. It just needs the black pickguard !! The white one just doesn't complement the look of the rest of the bass. I actually have the same problem with my old dark blue Squier P-Bass.
Great job! Think I’ll try to get a sunburst one for playing blues! Don’t understand why it comes in a white blonde with a white pick guard? The original ones I saw were a butterscotch color with a black pick guard or sunburst with the white pick guard!!! I remember that a original fenders were for sale in the early 80’s for $600-$800! I love vintage inspired instruments and this fit the bill. The finish i incredible. The instrument is gorgeous. I watched your review before purchasing, and made three visits to the store to compare to my other basses. It fit right in my collection. Thanks. This is a perfect bass for players like me looking for a complementary instrument.

Really a different sound - but the 60s is a classic P bass tone. The 50s is something different. If you already have a P, maybe try the 50s. If this is your first P, go for the 60s! T

I have the previous version blonde in ash. I like it, but the pick up is not great. Putting in a Seymour Duncan when my Luther gets back up and running. Very cool looking.

@@TylerSpicer I haven't, but I'll check it out. The nice thing about the previous version, in addition to the ash body, is that the bridge has cool looking brass saddles. I don't think that's historically accurate, but it really does look cool. I love big necks, and this bass delivers on that front. Nice review!
Sorry, I wrote about it above, but I might write here as well as a reply: IME, if you are getting a SCPB3, the single coil version of Duncan's Quarter Pounder, you get a really nice pickup with a slightly more modern tonal character as it has fatter notes and smoother transients, so it has a punchy flavour and doesn't have to rely on compression as much as the original single coil design in the mix for attack (sharp) and sustain (short). I don't know if that's the Duncan you're putting there, but it's quite a popular one. I currently have a Bare Knuckle 51 in mine which is truer to the original design, but I still keep it, nevertheless.

It really depends on what you’re doing. Is it your only bass? Or is it to venture into the world of P basses? I think I would go with the 70s in most situations! T

Hi, very nice review. Would you recommend this as one’s first bass? I’m not new to instruments (own a Fender Strat guitar, practice and have fun with it everyday) and the bass world seems interesting.
Thank you for the support! It’s got a slightly bigger neck, and the body isn’t so sculpted which makes maybe not as comfortable to bring close to the body as it could be. However, I love the simplicity of the tone controls, and it’s a very solid feeling instrument overall. Definitely worth considering! The other would be the CV60s Precision bass which has just a classic precision tone and feel. T
Another nice review Tyler.👍🏻 I have the 60’s P but if Squier made this one lefty I’d be all over it. Lefty single coil P basses are nearly nonexistent. The 60’s P also had a low cut A string groove on the nut.

60s if you want a typical great sounding P bass for the price, 50s if you want more of a single coil jazz bass on steroids type sound. The 50s is a little harder to place in a dense mix, but still a great bass! I’d go for the 60s if you don’t own a split coil P Bass already. T

..I have a blonde version a few years older. High-mass bridge, brass saddles, skinny frets, pine body, real bone nut...the pine bodies have prominent wide growth rings.

I got one of these a few months ago and loving the fat,bloomed tones as you described perfectly.Finding 50-75% tone producing great sound finger and pick playing.The 50s P produces a totally different tone to the split humbucker precision pickup. One slight issue I find is, mine is a weighty bass (almost 10lb) and it is a bit heavier (about 1.5 pounds) than my 20 yrs old MIM Fender precision.As you say Squier list the body as pine,maybe it is a heavier wood than the other Squier precision basses (Nato/Poplar). Did you notice it being heavier compared to the other Squier precision's you demo'd?

I enjoyed this review. I've a Chinese Squier Matt Freeman signature bass and it is extremely good. I think the snob value is in terminal decline! One thing i would appreciate you including in your reviews would be the weight of the instrument as i always prefer basses that are below 4kg. Anyway keep up the good work 👍
Thanks Ted! I’ll keep that in mind, I never really know if it’s worth mentioning weight on an instrument that isn’t specifically designed to be a certain weight (eg. Sadowskys) as the inconsistency of wood means it’s not a science. However, I’m happy to give you guys a rough idea so I will include it in future videos! I think the guitar centre have started listen weights of instruments on their website so also check that out or send them and email and they’ll be happy to weigh it and let you know! T
I've found my particular model of this bass is almost 10lb, requires a quality strap,but I play it sitting most of the time.Got it mail order, but kept it for the great tones it produces over the weight issue.
I don't know what it is about that single coil but it THUMPS. I usually use a player series jazz for rock gigs but brought one of these strung up with flats to rehearsal the other day for shits and giggles. I swear, our drummer and I were locked up tighter than charles manson in maximum security prison
I cannot even express how I love this bass. I bought it a month ago and I can't stop playing it. Definitely one of the best Squiers out there.

I picked one of these up second-hand just to have a bass around ( I play guitar) and I was truly impressed. The fit, finish and playability are wonderful. I originally shopped for a real P-bass second hand and just couldn't bring myself to plunk down the money.

Lol I had no idea what that black finger thing was used for. I use it as a thumb rest when I'm not playing.
That little bar by the strings is a handhold for bass players who play with their thumb. I previously owned 60's Jazz Bass, Mustang Bass and Gibson EB-O which had a handhold and I frequently played with my thumb.
I'm thinking of buying one of them just so I can swap out the neck with my paranormal jazz bass. I just love that 50's shaped headstock.

You might not even need to upgrade anything. Seems like Squier has improved in the hardware and electronics as compared to earlier models.
These are great; a set of flatwounds gives it even a more authentic tone plus easier on the fingers and frets.
Thanks for your review on this 50’s precision. I have been looking at a few different CV’s , 70’s Jaguar, 50’s P bass, 60’s precision, Sire P bass, and Glen Hughes Orange Purple Gibson stylish body Precision bass.? My wife liked the fifties Precision best overall. I have been on the fence about these basses. But mostly the P-bass.

Nice review. I have a Fender CIJ 51 style with a Bare Knuckle 51 single coil in, and although it's one of the greatest aftermarket you could possibly use, that single coil design and single magnet per string has some peculiarities which give it character but you need to know: first, IME, they're more reliant on compression to glue with the mix, and I think it shows also in the video. Moreover, because of the narrower magnetic window, you can get a drop in volume if you bend your strings on higher frets. Last, it's placed on the body right under the 4th fret harmonics, so they are rather silent - no "Continuum". If you want to address the first two points, I recommend the SCPB3, Duncan's Quarter Pounder single coil P, though you get a slightly more modern tone character, which you might not want.
The stock pickup in this model is one of the best in the Classic Vibe bass lineup.

I’m pretty sure it’s still an Alnico V pickup, but with a higher resistance pot so the roll off is more severe. T

This one was to expensive for me, so i bought a Harley Benton PB50VT instead. Some work and swapping out some parts.
After that = Killer bass!

So, interesting- Fender's site does not have the maple fingerboard as an option right now, but it is still available on dealer sites like Sweetwater, Guitar Center (US) and Musician's Friend.

@@TylerSpicer the GOTOH Res-o-lite tuners are great. Smooth and tension adjustable. The plates are flat on the bottom. No rivets going through the plate so they don't bend when you screw them in. They cleanly mount flush on the back of the headstock. The larger plate size can be an issue with some Squier headstocks but they just fit the Tele style. You can use the existing ferrules as the GOTOH post is the same size. Some people might wonder about a almost $100 set of tuners on a $400 bass but if it makes an improvement, which IMO it does then it's money well spent.

I liked that bass. You know, it's funny, whenever I see a bass that looks like that, I think of Dusty Hill from ZZ Top back in the 70's .. It just needs the black pickguard !! The white one just doesn't complement the look of the rest of the bass. I actually have the same problem with my old dark blue Squier P-Bass.

The original ones I saw were a butterscotch color with a black pick guard or sunburst with the white pick guard!!! I remember that a original fenders were for sale in the early 80’s for $600-$800! I love vintage inspired instruments and this fit the bill. The finish i incredible. The instrument is gorgeous. I watched your review before purchasing, and made three visits to the store to compare to my other basses. It fit right in my collection. Thanks. This is a perfect bass for players like me looking for a complementary instrument.
I believe after’54 until ‘57 you had white pickguards. Prior to that it was black Bakelite for the pickguards.

Really a different sound - but the 60s is a classic P bass tone. The 50s is something different. If you already have a P, maybe try the 50s. If this is your first P, go for the 60s! T

I have the previous version blonde in ash. I like it, but the pick up is not great. Putting in a Seymour Duncan when my Luther gets back up and running. Very cool looking.

@@TylerSpicer I haven't, but I'll check it out. The nice thing about the previous version, in addition to the ash body, is that the bridge has cool looking brass saddles. I don't think that's historically accurate, but it really does look cool. I love big necks, and this bass delivers on that front. Nice review!

Sorry, I wrote about it above, but I might write here as well as a reply: IME, if you are getting a SCPB3, the single coil version of Duncan's Quarter Pounder, you get a really nice pickup with a slightly more modern tonal character as it has fatter notes and smoother transients, so it has a punchy flavour and doesn't have to rely on compression as much as the original single coil design in the mix for attack (sharp) and sustain (short). I don't know if that's the Duncan you're putting there, but it's quite a popular one. I currently have a Bare Knuckle 51 in mine which is truer to the original design, but I still keep it, nevertheless.

Thank you for the support! It’s got a slightly bigger neck, and the body isn’t so sculpted which makes maybe not as comfortable to bring close to the body as it could be. However, I love the simplicity of the tone controls, and it’s a very solid feeling instrument overall. Definitely worth considering! The other would be the CV60s Precision bass which has just a classic precision tone and feel. T

The 60’s P also had a low cut A string groove on the nut.

60s if you want a typical great sounding P bass for the price, 50s if you want more of a single coil jazz bass on steroids type sound. The 50s is a little harder to place in a dense mix, but still a great bass! I’d go for the 60s if you don’t own a split coil P Bass already. T

No! I don't think I've ever come across a pine bass - I'm 90% sure it doesn't work as a tone wood! T

..I have a blonde version a few years older. High-mass bridge, brass saddles, skinny frets, pine body, real bone nut...the pine bodies have prominent wide growth rings.
Great review as ever Tyler. I got one of these a few months ago and loving the fat,bloomed tones as you described perfectly.Finding 50-75% tone producing great sound finger and pick playing.The 50s P produces a totally different tone to the split humbucker precision pickup. One slight issue I find is, mine is a weighty bass (almost 10lb) and it is a bit heavier (about 1.5 pounds) than my 20 yrs old MIM Fender precision.As you say Squier list the body as pine,maybe it is a heavier wood than the other Squier precision basses (Nato/Poplar). Did you notice it being heavier compared to the other Squier precision's you demo'd?
Does it have a fat 50s style neck? I actually like those fat necks and was curious

I enjoyed this review. I've a Chinese Squier Matt Freeman signature bass and it is extremely good. I think the snob value is in terminal decline! One thing i would appreciate you including in your reviews would be the weight of the instrument as i always prefer basses that are below 4kg. Anyway keep up the good work 👍
Thanks Ted! I’ll keep that in mind, I never really know if it’s worth mentioning weight on an instrument that isn’t specifically designed to be a certain weight (eg. Sadowskys) as the inconsistency of wood means it’s not a science. However, I’m happy to give you guys a rough idea so I will include it in future videos! I think the guitar centre have started listen weights of instruments on their website so also check that out or send them and email and they’ll be happy to weigh it and let you know! T

I've found my particular model of this bass is almost 10lb, requires a quality strap,but I play it sitting most of the time.Got it mail order, but kept it for the great tones it produces over the weight issue.

I don't know what it is about that single coil but it THUMPS. I usually use a player series jazz for rock gigs but brought one of these strung up with flats to rehearsal the other day for shits and giggles. I swear, our drummer and I were locked up tighter than charles manson in maximum security prison
