    The 50s one does it for me, both in terms of looks & tones.
    So much more lively & characterful.
    I can see why Sting uses one!

    I bought the same blonde 50s P bass last year. I love the chunky neck, I’m not a fan of skinny necks and I love the single coil tone. More growl and maybe too bright. I strung it with flats and it now sounds pretty much perfect. I agree with the pickguard - I’m considering getting an gold anodised pickguard made for it.

    • @91cog
      @91cog  3 года назад +3

      A few people have told me that they e put flats on there. I’ll have to give it a go, in my head it sounds like a great idea. Gold on white blonde would be super slick! Thanks for watching

    Earlier this evening I was watching a shootout of the 60s vs 70s so this makes a three-way. I listened mostly through headphones but interestingly through the cellphone speaker the 50s bass comes across better implying that the 70s has less upper-mids. The 60s definitely had the Jamerson vibe. Tough decision because I thought I needed the classic P bass sound to go along with my jazz basses but the 50s has so much character I think it's the one I would buy.

    Recently I started to learn bass and I was attracted to P-basses because of Queen. And then I found that Squier Classic Vibe 50/60/70s are cool for beginners, but I couldn’t recognise differences much. But this video helped me a lot to compare them. Thank you for your effort to make this good video. I think I’ll get one soon. 😊

    I’m a converted Pbass 51 dude now, I used the 57 P bass most of my music career till I got a 55 P bass and that was a now way back, all the clarity, brightness, rawness and bite that I was always trying to unveil from a 57 humbucker I got it in spades on a 55 single coil that I have to tame it, it easier to tame and cut trebles than get something that is not there by nature, the hum is manageable with proper wiring and shielding and good pickups like lindy fralins and if I want the low mids i just roll off the treble control and turn bass up on my amp, Love it love it love it my 51 and 55 P’s, now I almost used my 57-60s for deep sound with flats or tapes but for edgy roundwound tone the single coils is raw as F…

    Great vid and comparison however I disagree with a couple things... I just bought a Sunburst CV 50 P and own several other p basses.
    Loved the tone comparison but disagree with the analysis. the single coil is a bit thinner and has more attack than the split coil which is fatter and smoother.. but you had nice sound samples that showed that...
    I find The split coil is also more versatile as it it more sensitive to where you pick or pluck, as in close to the neck or close to the bridge..Both great basses

    What is the little tug bar for? Is it purely for vintage aesthetic? And how is the player meant to rest their thumb without a pick-up placed further back toward the bridge? Is it meant to be plucked with a ‘freestyle’ right hand, not resting anywhere? Thanks

    • @91cog

      Yep it’s called a ‘tugger’. In the early days of the electric bass, many players would pluck with their thumb and rest their fingers underneath the plastic rest. *Almost* tugging with their fingers with every thumb pluck.
