Defense industries that sell weapons globally always profit from any war. That is true in Ukraine right now.
The weapons are used against russian fascists, so that's what weapons are LITERALLY designed for. It's not enough to make a claim that defense industries are profiting, that's just basic capitalism at its best.

Russia will tolerate Missiles close to its borders in the same way the US would....but then the US motto is; 'do as we Say', not as we Do'....
Russia has put nuclear missiles (or nuclear weapon materials) inside Ukraine during the Soviet era, they're there already. Those pose a threat to neighbouring NATO member States, if Russia were to seize and occupy Ukraine. And Russia's historic (and current) attempts to install a pro-Russian undemocratic puppet President and government in Ukraine is totally unacceptable to both the Ukraine people, and the West.
The Ukraine people have made that absolutely clear to Russia. They're prepared to fight to the death to protect their democracy, sovereignty, and independence from Russia. Ukraine is not a NATO member. NATO has not asked it to be a NATO member. And NATO has no intention of putting nuclear weapons inside Ukraine. So Russia's argument there is baseless.

As many other have commented below, the other big winner in this process apart from China has been the military industrial complex, it certainly is very plausible to believe that this was all intended from the start since many other prominent intellectuals have been warning about it for years. Look at the situation over the past few years, NATO was losing its relevance, Russia was growing richer and closer to Europe thanks to providing it with cheap energy. The US was losing its political influence and distribution channel for arms. As John says, the US has been poking he bear for a long time, and it seemed like a very foolish thing to do unless of course your an arms dealer, for them it made perfect sense. Today the aid package of 40 Billion flew through congress, 7 Billion more than what the president requested, all Democrats voted in favor, only 7 Republicans opposed it. When it's difficult to make sense of things, the best thing to do is "follow the money", it's like Occam's razor.

One of the arguments of Western countries is that they have been fighting Russia for some 20 years because Russia has an autocratic regime, which is a legitimate argument, but then I don’t understand why the same Western countries maintain close alliances with autocratic regimes and dictatorships around the world, like Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar or Egypt, including helping them in brutal wars against neighboring countries, such as Yemen? If they are in close alliances with dictators, then it is not so much a fight of good against evil, but rather something like a Great Game between two imperialist blocs from the 19th century.

I hope the US does exactly what you describe, and gets the military industry going for Ukraine. The weapons we can give them, combined with their own fierce resistance, might be the only thing that saves them as a nation. And we will GIVE them everything we can, but they can buy whatever they want directly. That's kind of how a free country works.

Eisenhower warned the world about these war-mongers for profit but nobody listened and now it's too late, the foxes are in charge of the henhouse they run US foreign policy.
They persuaded Ukraine to poke the Russian bear for years with the promise Uncle Sam had their back and now they're stuck with it, the US will not officially put boots on the ground. I only hope the Taiwanese are watching how the USA treats its toys because they're next.

the professor is right...the us and nato are the main instigators of this disaster. i too can not understand why europe and russia are divided unless the usa ultimately wants to keep them all weak....one day the american geopolitical strategy is going to blow up in its face and i think that might be soon.

Ever since 2014 NATO has been secretly training the Ukrainian military to effectively fight against Russia, thus it is NATO expertise which has allowed Ukraine to put an effective resistance to Russia. As the professor says, this in turn endangers the entire planet because under an existential threat states can resort to, indeed, risky tactics.

No one is critically asking why SHOULD Russia and India work together to contain China? What’s in it for them? This will only maintain the US-led “rule-based order” that mainly benefits the US, and the US will not hesitate to crush India or Russia if their economies did a little too well for America’s comfort, the same way it crushed Japan’s economy in the 1980s and the same way it’s trying to crush China now. On the other hand, China is quite happy to live in a multi-polar world and do business with everyone. Russia and India have more to gain by working WITH China than against it. The world would be a much more peaceful and prosperous place, including the US, if the US just minded its own business.

I think the world agreed to not just US hegemony, but to super-hegemony in the style of Rome, the world needs consolidation for global projects. But the last decade has shown that this is not a world empire, but an unstable, irresponsible country with an atomic baton and a fleet, from which you can expect ANYTHING.
Some clowns and villains in the presidential elections, now an old man with dementia, the funeral of a fentanyl addict in a platinum coffin at the state level, some invasions of the capitol - this is the internal policy not of a world empire and a city on a hill, but of a developing country, which is sometimes disrupted into excesses.
In foreign policy, everything became clear after they overthrew a democratically elected president in the middle of Europe and staged a civil war that claimed 14k lives by 2020. And now they have brought matters to a hot war, and God knows what the prospects of all this are. And don't tell me they had nothing to do with it and didn't play a major role in it.
I do not think that the elites in Europe and the rest of the world agree on such an overlord. The only question is whether they will be able to reduce its influence, and ideally to deprive of atomic weapons, before it causes too much damage to the world around.

Your idea won't work because the Indians hate the Chinese. Chinese people don't care much about India but the Indians have a massive superiority complex when they think about China. This is an extremely complex issue but I will try to explain in this TLDR:
Indians are a deeply colonized people. For generations Indians where under British rule and have adopted a kind of self hatred for colored peoples. Many Indians love White people and worship Western countries. After winning their independence, India basically adopted the political, linguistic, and philosophical outlook of their former colonial masters, while China completely rejected Western Liberal Democracy. The whole world thought India would easily beat China because of these reasons. Indians themselves thought they were on right path. But alas that did not happen, in fact the opposite happened.
In the early 1980s China was more poor than India. But by 2020 China is MUCH richer and far more developed than India. China has become so successful that every political and economic theory of development was thrown out the window. China has become the envy of the developing world. Even the West is becoming afraid of China, and with fear comes a certain level of respect. The kind of respect that Indians have always desired from the West.
In short, China's massive success is a constant reminder to Indians of their failures. It's a constant reminder that even with the whole world backing them, supporting them, and cheering them on, they lost to China. India's self-hatred and blind worship of the West caused India to neglect it's own cultural/historical circumstances and adopt Western economic/political systems that are ill suited to solve it's own problems. India projects this self-hatred towards China. But in truth Indians are really disappointed in themselves.
Perhaps one day Indians will see their mistakes and fix their country. Until that day comes they will project all their anger and disappointment at the Chinese. Whom the Indians see as racially inferior to White people, yet somehow defied all odds and are dominating at everything.
If China had remained a poor and wretched country, India and the West would love and pity them.
I wish Europe could keep some distance from the US. We are being used.

I have some vivid memories from the horrible war in Viet Nam. While the average number of civilians killed within a war zone is typically between 3 to 5 killed for each combatant soldier killed, when “advanced weapons” are used, that ratio can climb to 10:1 (as you have stated so well). However, short and long-term afflictions such as Malnutrition and Infectious Diseases raise this horrible ratio even higher.
Last but certainly the worst consequences of war are the INJURED SURVIVORS who often suffer from severe long-term incurable disabilities such as PHYSICAL AND PSYCHICAL PAIN, DEPRESSIONS, and PTSD, resulting in astoundingly high SUICIDE RATES THAT ARE RARELY ACCURATELY REPORTED BY GOVERNMENTS (and those governments usually hide these final “statistics”). The same happens with the children who are orphaned by War.

It's always war time since the Cold War. It's never going to end for West vs Russia. Now we have a another main power from the East to rise.

How is a defensive pact an aggressor? It literally cannot attack russia. It is a DEFENSIVE pact. the only time it can do anything at all is if one of the members were attacked. Mearsheimer never explains how exactly NATO possessed a legitimate “existential threat”. Prior to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, many European NATO members were not meeting their financial obligations to the alliance, the US was pivoting to Asia, and there was many questioning if the alliance would continue. There was no indication that Ukraine was seriously going to be a member of the alliance even after Russia had already annexed Crimea. So to think that that NATO was going to some how launch an attack in Russia from Ukraine is just not realistic.

I don't really see the world uniting against America anytime soon. Primarily because the US is a relatively benign Super Power. The US has most of the resources it needs at home. There aren't any territories the US is desperate to have it doesn't already. So everyone can trust the Americans not to violate their territorial integrity. The US protects the sea lanes and for the most part ensures global peace and stability and all the US really asks for is peace and trade. Unless you disrupt and threaten the peace and trade the Americans will tolerate a lot. Saudi Arabia is a far worse country than Iran, but the Saudis largely play by America's rules while Iran actively antogonizes America and propagates violence across the Middle East. As America retreats from the global order it has built and that order crumbles I think a lot of people are going to learn the hard way and very violently how central America is to global peace and prosperity. I think you're going to see a lot of countries begging America to help them and prop them up.

This is the cleverest interview i've watched or read so far on the Ukraine war. Hundreds of millions of people should watch it to make the world a better place.
I've seen a few of Professor John Mearsheimer's talks which are followed by excellent question and answer sessions on RUclips. Look for the one titled Why Ukraine is the West's fault Professor John Mearsheimer. He exactly lays out what happened and he gave this talk 8 years ago. He explains the lead up and basically will take you to where we are now even though the talk is 8 years old.
This is far from clever, the guy clearly omits many facts and events preceeding 24 Feb so it suit his thesis. As Polish, I am very sad to see apologism of Russia, downplaying the destructive role of russian imperialism on th region and puting the blame on the West for the war that Putin is clearly responsible for in 95%.
Go watch the Monk debate with him where he ridicules himself by stating that Putin would leave the southern-eastern Ukraine along with Donbas and Luhansk if only Ukraine's neutrality is guaranteed. This guy lives in a fantasy world and it amazes me how one can be detached from reality to such a high degree.

I had sympathy for some of his arguments a couple of years ago. I even repeated some of them but I was wrong.The West didn't allow Ukraine into NATO, out of fear of provoking Russia. The West has been weak not too aggressive. Cutting their armed forces to the bone. There was no reaction to poisonings overseas, taking Crimea, South Ossetia. The West instead built pipelines to benefit from Russian gas, those countries are dependent on Russia, they didn't want conflict. The only countries who wanted to expand NATO were those who shared a border with Russia. It turns out with good reason.

I think prof. John Mearsheimer seems to assume that the will of the Ukrainian people is not a factor that needs to be considered, as if Ukraine is just capable of being manipulated by one side or the other but not of making their own decision for their future.
This man is a historian with no concept of military strategy. Russia has no intension of invading the Ukraine. Just by the troop Nos 40000 troops where never intended to take a 2,8million or so city like Kiev with a 200000 Ukrainian army defending it. it was there as a diversionary tactic to pin the troops there and cut it off from the eastern army Azof brigade which Russia intends to annihilate in this it has been successful. Russia has demonstrated at a great Blood loss to itself that it has gone in soft in order to minimise civilian casualties. It has maintained Ukrainian infrastructure. it has not knocked out railways, bridges, allowed the Ukrainians to keep cell phone networks it allowed the Ukrainian leader to have Zoom conferences with NATO,EU, and American Governments in order to maintain a possible solution which the Ukrainian leader is throwing away ( a peace mandate he was overwhelmingly elected for). any military person will tell you that so far the Russians have not gone in hard and are open to small skirmish losses but in a full on military attack the Ukraine could be reduced to rubble something the Russians demonstrably do not want to do, so far.

You are pretty arrogant. I don't agree with a lot of what Mearsheimer says, but what he does have is military knowledge, probably more than you do. What you don't seem to know is that this man was in the military before he was a historian.
When he was 17, Mearsheimer enlisted in the US Army. After 1 year as an enlisted member, he obtained an appointment to the US Military Academy at West Point, which he attended from 1966 to 1970. After graduation, he served for 5 years as an officer in the US Air Force.

When Korea got divided into 2 countries agaist our will at the end of the ww2, korean people had actually no choice for their future (I am Korean and I know very well about this sad history. Not proud history either). The result of the war wasnt what Korean people wanted. We still cannot do anything for north korean people because of all those sactions by other contries with great power. We will never be abke to unite just like Germany. Because countries with big power would never want us to reunite. Ukraine will be the same. This war is never going to be ended by Ukraine people. This war is continuing for months because of Nato and Usa. Think about Georgia case. For the good of Ukraine people this war must end as soon as quickly. And Russia will never give up because of they ve been continously humiliated for years and years by Nato and Usa. Usa and Nato will never give up either. In this situation only part remined in actual shit of war is Ukraine. But i doubt Ukrainian have any power or chance to decide their own future. Korea was in almost the same situation 70 years ago. The professor is on point on the geopolitical arena, but he is completely off when it comes to the actual military operation of the Russian arm force in Eastern Ukraine. The US's bullish intention to control resources in the world is the problem. It really tries hard to dictate India , Russia and China but in vain. The professor's prescription of containing China is simply stupidity. What does he think that India, Russia, and China would bow to the US's manipulation? He is wrong to suggest this approach. I agree in the longer term China wins out. In the shorter to medium term the US wins. Nordstream 2 closed. Trade between Russia and the EU stopped. Belt and Road initiative curtailed in Russia and probably Kazakhstan, The US picks up the trade slack with the EU.Russia's power diminished but also keeps the EU economies at a slower pace because of the lack of basic resources from Russia.
Trade between Russia and the EU has not stopped, especially with gas. Trade between US and EU has remained fairly unchanged.
But also never underestimate the amount of interference and outright coups the CIA runs all over the world.
If they really wanted, they could start a coup in even Germany.

To me it's more interesting to know what will happen after Russia occupies Donbas and the southern regions of Herson and Zaporizhia. What will Russia do then? Will it keep going or what? And if not, what will Ukraine do? Will it just keep shelling the Russian soldiers in those regions every day? One Russian (I forgot who) said that the "demilitarization" will take 5 to 10 years. What does this mean? These are the things that personally interest me more that whether or not Ukraine will be neutral. We don't even know what Ukraine will look like and when the war will officially stop.
