    I was behind a guy who took his TRD pro Tacoma down black bear pass. Went on three wheels but did all my jeep could do. Toyotas are amazing machines. Love jeep and Toyotas. Let's out our petty differences aside folks. Both are amazing machines.

      You can do black bear pass in a Subaru outback or jeep cherokee. It's not much of a challenge. Absolutely love doing BB Pass though. Beautiful. Not so technically difficult but some real butt clinching moments like the section called "The Steps".

    Currently own a 2016 Tacoma TRD Off Road, came from a 2014 Wrangler Rubicon (2 door). Though fun off road, living with the Jeep was a nightmare after like 6 months. Great 2nd vehicle for recreational purpose. My Tacoma for everyday and trail usage is night and day better. Way more comfortable on the highway with more payload and towing capacity, but also very balanced off road with a rear locker and crawl control. Not to mention, my Tacoma’s reliability and resale value.

    • @trailrunnah8886
      @trailrunnah8886 6 лет назад +11

      Seems like a Sport S lines up closer to the SR5. All the "S" package does is add things that a 15k Kia has standard, such as power locks, windows, and AC. No off-road goodies, while the TRD has the locker and crawl.

    • @4-LOW
      @4-LOW 6 лет назад +2

      Naw, the Sport S would line up well against the TRD Offroad. Very similar tires, BLD traction control just like the Taco, similar ride height, etc. That would be the best (and most apples to apples) offroad comparison they could do.

    • @trailrunnah8886
      @trailrunnah8886 6 лет назад +2

      OFFRD BLD is not a locker. SR5 trim comes standard with an automatic E-limited slip rear diff, which is more in line with BLD. Also, SR5 and Sport both come with street tires, while TRD OR has more off-road designed tires. Maybe the old JK Willys Wheeler lines up more with the TRD as it came with a rear ltd slip and BEG KM's. Another way to look at it is Sport is the base Jeep, and TRD is the third tier up in the Taco model line (SR, SR5, TRD). It would be great if jeep offered a Sport with a rear locker and BFG KO2s. THAT would be a direct TRD OR competitor. Tho, Jeep guys are gonna buy Jeeps, and Taco guys will buy Tacos. No test is changing anyone's mind.

    • @dmwil1
      @dmwil1 6 лет назад +21

      That's funny. I'm not sure why, but I always hear this kind of stuff from Toyota owners. Even more so when I was a Toyota owner and no Jeep owners were thought to be around. The Toyotas are great, but the Jeeps are in their element on the trail. They simply are more capable, in the hands of equally experienced drivers.

  • @mcruz4467

    Tacoma did great!. Yes the "modified" Jeep swallowed the trail as to be expected but the Taco being a stock longer wheelbase, did what the best selling midsize truck do best, Offroad with reliability and utility!!!

  • @trailrunnah8886
    @trailrunnah8886 6 лет назад +40

    Of course the modded Jeep will eat this type of terrain up. More impressive was that the stock Taco had no issues. In fact, I'd wager the Taco is capable of even more. The thing is, the 2door jeep is a 1 trick pony, and is poor at most everything else, while the Taco is a good all rounder. Also, Taco would leave the JK in the dust at high speed desert stuff. And I'm a Jeep fan, btw.

      Jonathan Reed Most rigs are built this way. This is probably the most realistic you can get. When you show up with friends on a trail, most would have different rigs with different setups. Lift, tires, lockers, and other electronics. You’re looking for a more controlled test, where both rigs have similar equipment. They should point out that it’s a comparison between those two particular rigs. Not all Tacomas and not all Wranglers are considered, just those two vehicles against each other.

    I'm myself a ex Taco owner but will be getting the 2019 Jeep JL but nothing beats owning a Tacoma for 7 years, putting over 120k troublefree miles on it (with only oil changes and tire rotation) and then selling it for 70% of its value. No matter how many comparisons are done. One is a Chrysler. That will always always always let you down. Had two. They were the least reliable thing I had ever owned. Hands down. The Toyota will always be a better car for a real person. Car reviewers turn their stuff in in two weeks. Even tfl thought that putting 40k miles on that jku they had was a lot of miles. Which most American car buyers do think. 100k is unheard of. Especially since they got rid of the amc 4.0 and went to all Chrysler motors.

      Of course Toyota is better quality product. But the Jeep is more FUN because it's a toy first and foremost, and everything else is secondary. And if it's relatively new and you're not going to keep it for too many years, or you like to wrench...then the Jeep is still the way to go. Especially if it's a second car, has a warranty, and you already have a nice reliable Japanese vehicle in the family. Once you've got the lift on and have the doors and roof off on the Jeep, there's just no comparison to any other vehicle. This is coming from someone who's owned both Wranglers and Toyota/Honda/Nissan products. Now I'm in NYC and don't own a car at all. Jeep..."they're shit but they're fun." Having owned a two door Rubicon and an old clapped out 4 banger 80’s Wrangler back in the 90’s I can tell you as far as daily fun factor, nothing beats a Jeep. Two door (short wheel base) Jeeps will have you grinning ear to ear without even going off-road and the ability to take the tops off them make them darn near perfect. I currently drive a ‘17 Tacoma with a manual only because I need the bed and towing capacity, if not for those needs I’d be driving a Rubicon. BTW-Jeep haters love to bash their reliability. Well, mine were perfectly reliable and even if they weren’t, the fun factor would override any reliability niggles. Man, I miss my Rubicon. I’m also the #1 Taco fanboy-haha.

    Since y’all frequently come across vehicles in off road tests where the tires are the limiting factor, would it be worth getting a couple sets of wheels with very common bolt patterns and throw a set of mud terrains on them to swap onto the vehicle in comparisons like this? Just curious, even just used tires and steel wheels.

I also have the rear locker where none of them are rubicons, and the locker is an incredible tool to have.
      What would normally give the Jeep an advantage though is the solid front axle setup, but each trail prefers different vehicles
