  • Among the villas erected among the hills of Margine Rosso, at the end of via Gennargentu in Quartu Sant'Elena, in a dominant position over the underlying plain crossed by the Riu Foxi, there was an ancient proto-historic fortification called "Su Forti Becciu", currently abandoned to itself itself.
From the large dimensions of the granite blocks it was only possible to deduce the robustness of the structure.
During the Second World War, a fort was built among its ruins in what was the central courtyard of the nuraghe, which is still in good condition today and dominates towards the coast.
According to other sources, given the raised and dominant position of the bunker, it could be hypothesized that it could be part of an anti-aircraft battery, but since the rest of the structure is buried under earth and vegetation (and probable building abuses) we cannot ascertain this.
    Good vision!
    HISTORY:
In 1942, Quartu Sant'Elena turned out to be a fortified city. In anticipation of an Allied landing, a line of strongholds was built which takes the name of the "Quartu containment arch", forming part of the Cagliari defensive sector, entrusted to the XIII Coastal Brigade which was elevated, in the summer of 1943, to 203rd Coast Division. And the false church was part of it.
It was a real Maginot Line and is estimated to be made up of around 80 blockhouses throughout the territory, which we will explore soon.
The "Quartu containment arch" started from the hinterland to include the entire coast that went from Poetto, passed through Margine Rosso and Sant'Andrea and reached up to and beyond the Carlo Faldi anti-ship battery (Is Mortorius), one of the bastions of the "Sea Front" of Cagliari. But also on the hill side, on positions strategically placed high up.
On the hills of Pitz'e Serra is the building known in the area as "the false church". A name that is not accidental: the building has construction characteristics that recall a country church and is even equipped with a circular shape that recalls the rose window of a church. The construction, however, is nothing more than a real military fort with all the characteristics attributable to the other fortifications of the containment arch.
The comparison between a small rural church in the Quarti area (such as those of San Benedetto and Sant'Andrea) and the small military outpost leaves no doubt about the fact that the military engineers actually studied a decidedly accurate plan. Observing the outpost it is clear that, despite the camouflage being partially damaged, a great resemblance emerges with the architecture of a country church with a single nave, gabled roof and central rose window of Catalan Gothic inspiration.
In this way, the attempt to locate the enemy outpost by land or air and consequently hit or bomb it could be averted through visual deception.
The Quartese containment arch was a truly impressive work. In fact, the city of Quartu was never directly bombed (unlike Cagliari, which was heavily damaged), but the commitment to building a Maginot line was such as to create a real fortified city.
In fact, at least 1500 permanent positions were built throughout the island to deal with a possible landing of American troops.
In recent years the "False Church" and some forts and casemates in the Quarti area have been cleaned by volunteers and enthusiasts, so that they can access their interior easily and safely and enjoy the historical testimonies of a tragic and not so distant past and sometimes organizing guided tours, also for Open Monuments.
