rotation shema: Ever since he first saw it at 6 months of age, my son was obsessed with spinning a flat, round object like a lid. He practiced starting at 7 months and finally succeeded when he turned one. If we went somewhere, all I needed to entertain him was the lid of one of his toy pans. As soon as he was able to do it, the obsession was gone and never came back :D Thanks so much for an interesting video!

My 19 month old is strongly in a transportation scheme. He'll more laundry from washer to dryer and from dryer to the couch. He'll go back and forth to his bedroom to bring me every book he has. Thanks for this video! I was just looking for schema info. Great timing.

This is great . I noticed this within my toddler but didn’t know it had a name . Since I’ve been getting him toys that go along with whatever schema he’s going through he’s been playing independently for a long time and I’ve been able to reduce screen time . Which I’m happy about.

She also enjoys throwing food on the floor and giving our dog an oatmeal bath 😂 Your videos have been SO helpful. Especially now since my daughter wants to be a little more independent 😂
Thanks for the ideas on activities. My 11 month old boy isn't walking yet. He is currently throwing things off his high chair, likes climbing, loves to cover his face with blankets, clothes etc and is always hiding his toys under the couch. It all makes sense now after watching your video :)

My 14 month old dose these behaviours throwing food on the floor . He like tapping toys on the floor , sofa the tv unit. He likes to throw a ball but he then wonts to throw everything . My son was 3 months early so it's always hard to tell . So this video has been really helpful.

Wow! Didn’t know that climbing was a trajectory schema. My toddlers are climbers and I have been giving them opportunities to climb outside of home, good thing it’s summer time and we can spend more time outside.
My daughter is super obsessed with dressing and undressing herself. She's 18 months old. She'll dig out all her socks and shoes and try to put them on, take her shirt off and try to out it back on, and so on. Does this fall into a schema? I've just been allowing her to "play" these ways because she's building life skills. But just curious =)

There is a general progression, but it's not in a strict order. That depends on the child. They will experience most, if not all of these before they are 6. Their natural development will guide them along. Don't feel like you need to move them from one to the other, just be attentive to the clues they will naturally give you and try to cater to that specific schema. :)

Would this relate to a 10 month old are these ideas for toddlers? I’m really being challenged with keeping my 9 month old entertained. I’m getting tired of her light up typical toys & so is she. She’s not really being challenged. This got me to look more into the Montessori style of learning and playing. I loooove that the concept is going to be challenging her! She needs this! But I just don’t know where to start! Also kind of on a budget! Would you recommend just grabbing a few toys at a time to start? Lol it’s kind of overwhelming on how to start this method. I make kind off play hide and seek, I tell her to search thinks that she hide and try to grab it. Now she only throws things that she can grab and put it back or at least she know where her toys when she needs it.
Hi! Thank you so much for all of your awesome videos and guidance, I really appreciate them! I was wondering, is it normal for a toddler to be in a certain schema for a long period of time? My 16-month-old is actually showing signs that he’s in three different schemas, but he’s been in the trajectory one since he was about six months old. He’s always been fascinated by dropping and throwing things. I feel bad when I have to tell him no because he’s going to throw some thing that he could break or if he might get hurt so I try my best not to and to give him things that he can throw or drop that are appropriate. But this doesn’t seem to help with him not wanting to throw things that I don’t want him to. 😂 He recently got the ring stacker from lovevery about two months ago and has not been using it the way that it is meant for. I have shown him several times how to stack the rings, but he has no interest in that. He just likes to pick it up and throw it several times and gets very amped up from doing that. Do you think that I should just put it away for now until he is ready for it?

My daughter is definitely in a trajectory schema since she was about 6 months old (she’s 15 months now). She throws everything from food, her clothes, to her toys. I’m having a challenging time trying to teach her how to brush her own teeth, self feed with a spoon/fork, or try any kind of Montessori activity (for example, transferring little balls from one bowl to another). As soon as I give her something she throws it across the room. Does this mean that she’s just not ready? Should I keep waiting and try again? I read that there are sensitive periods for children between birth to 3 years old to learn to do certain things during a window of time. I’m worried that she will pass her “sensitive period” to learn things like feeding herself with a spoon/fork or dressing herself. I keep trying to “follow the child” but to be honest, sometimes I’m not really sure “how to observe”. I’ve been trying to practice Montessori at home since she was born but I haven’t really witnessed her do anything independently or “Montessori” yet. 😔 I get so excited to introduce something new to her but she just ends up throwing it. I had to put away certain wooden toys because she would end up hurting herself with it when she throws it in the air. Now I just give her bean bags, balls and scarves to play with lol. I’ve read the books “Montessori from the Start” and currently reading “The Montessori Toddler”, and watched your Montessori at home RUclips videos (And taking your ecourse too) and trying to practice all the things mentioned however sometimes I feel as though I’m missing something or just going about it incorrectly. My son is 11 months and his schema is scattering things! If his food is all in one spot he has to swipe it around. If his blocks are all in one spot again he has to swipe them with his hands scattering them. Pretty cute

C R G mine almost cried at 24 wks when he thought I was taking a new bk away when I was just lifting it back towards him (in the library) 26 wks now and hooked bad. 😍 I love it.

My child only likes to demolish, not connect.. I try my best to model putting things together playing separately, but she just sees it as me setting it up for her to knock it down. When I let her play with blocks on her own, she just takes her hands to sweep them apart and walks off to find another stimulating object to explore.

Could a child exhibit these schemas while they are still an infant? My 6mo old son LOVES to pull things over his face-his bib, toys, blankets, clothes, etc. I had him laying on a blanket and he managed to grab the corner and pull it over his face. If I place his clothes near him while I’m changing him he will grab them and pull them to his face. Once it’s on his face he flails his arm and when I pull it off his face he laughs. He has done this so frequently (mostly with his bib or toys) that I feel like it could be a schema based off your explanation. I just didn’t know if it could start this early, but I supposed this is like peek a boo as you mentioned.
Maybe someone can help me? My 9mo is obsessed with opening and closing things. Or lifting them up and putting them back down. Yesterday she would not stop opening and closing a closet door even though she kept slamming her fingers in it. I ended up having to block off that cabinet with boxes because if I tried to redirect her attention she just crawled straight back to it. She's also fascinated with lifting up our carpet. She'll just lift it up over and over again. What schema is this? What activities can I do with a 9mo to support it?
You do not just provide theoretical information in a way that is detailed yet easy to digest...you go further to give us WHAT to do with them. I wouldn't know what to do without you as a mom.
My 2 year old throws stuff when he is mad. How can I help him? He will throw anything. He threw his chalkboard the other day, then his train, then flipped his chair over all in 1 min. It's driving me insane and I'm losing patience.
Pretty sure my 9 month old is in the trajectory schema. He climbs on everything. He doesn’t throw anything but he loves to bang whatever is in his hand on the floor or another object. Ideas on how to help him without getting dings on my wood floor? (I think he likes the sound)
Kathryn Garrison carpeting in the areas he is in most often or those foam mats. I think discouraging the behaviour is not going to be over all helpful, just try redirecting him to do it in areas that won’t hurt your floor as much
I agree with Lora! Also try some of those softer but still hard balls or blocks? They would make a noise, but otherwise not damage anything. And if it is the sound that he is fascinated with, perhaps try offering something that makes noise, like a small drum or other musical instruments! 😊
I think I need to get him a drum. He has a little hammer for his xylophone that he uses to hit everything and honestly I think it’s so cute because he tries to “sing” too. The hammer can’t hurt anything but I think it’s time to find a drum. Thanks!!
Posting schema- where the child wants to insert items like coins, cards or other objects in containers. Support that by giving them a piggy bank to put in coins or a box with a hole to put in poker chips!
Children dont necessarily have to be spoken to "like children". Explain to them there is a time and place for things. Some things okay at home are not okay in public. My 4 year old has know since he was 2 that when we are at the library, we use a softer voice than most places. That's coming from a kid who's "inside voice" is the equal decibel to a jet plane
@@loracorwyn3713 oh! I'm just not able to figure out what schema my daughter is in. Do kids skip some schemas? Like I've never seen her line things up or connect them and never seen her upside down. I feel like she has always been in the trajectory schema she loves slides and speeding on her scooter and the only thing she ever did with her toys was throw them out of sight.
greengumgrows she probably just had been processing them in a less obvious way then the examples given. From what I’ve read for instance the lining up schema can also be expressed by separating things by colours, like putting all blue blocks in a pile and red in another etc or placing all round objects into a basket and all square objects into another one.

My son is 11 months and his schema is scattering things! If his food is all in one spot he has to swipe it around. If his blocks are all in one spot again he has to swipe them with his hands scattering them. Pretty cute

Yes, more than one is very common! Pretty sure both my kiddos are always in several different ones at a time! 😊

Up through 6 or 7, but you could certainly see elements of schemas in older children, still, too!

My child only likes to demolish, not connect.. I try my best to model putting things together playing separately, but she just sees it as me setting it up for her to knock it down. When I let her play with blocks on her own, she just takes her hands to sweep them apart and walks off to find another stimulating object to explore.

Could a child exhibit these schemas while they are still an infant? My 6mo old son LOVES to pull things over his face-his bib, toys, blankets, clothes, etc. I had him laying on a blanket and he managed to grab the corner and pull it over his face. If I place his clothes near him while I’m changing him he will grab them and pull them to his face. Once it’s on his face he flails his arm and when I pull it off his face he laughs. He has done this so frequently (mostly with his bib or toys) that I feel like it could be a schema based off your explanation. I just didn’t know if it could start this early, but I supposed this is like peek a boo as you mentioned.

Maybe someone can help me? My 9mo is obsessed with opening and closing things. Or lifting them up and putting them back down. Yesterday she would not stop opening and closing a closet door even though she kept slamming her fingers in it. I ended up having to block off that cabinet with boxes because if I tried to redirect her attention she just crawled straight back to it. She's also fascinated with lifting up our carpet. She'll just lift it up over and over again. What schema is this? What activities can I do with a 9mo to support it?
From what I have read that is a connection schema. Try toys that click together.

My 2 year old throws stuff when he is mad. How can I help him? He will throw anything. He threw his chalkboard the other day, then his train, then flipped his chair over all in 1 min. It's driving me insane and I'm losing patience.
Pretty sure my 9 month old is in the trajectory schema. He climbs on everything. He doesn’t throw anything but he loves to bang whatever is in his hand on the floor or another object. Ideas on how to help him without getting dings on my wood floor? (I think he likes the sound)
Kathryn Garrison carpeting in the areas he is in most often or those foam mats. I think discouraging the behaviour is not going to be over all helpful, just try redirecting him to do it in areas that won’t hurt your floor as much
I agree with Lora! Also try some of those softer but still hard balls or blocks? They would make a noise, but otherwise not damage anything. And if it is the sound that he is fascinated with, perhaps try offering something that makes noise, like a small drum or other musical instruments! 😊
I think I need to get him a drum. He has a little hammer for his xylophone that he uses to hit everything and honestly I think it’s so cute because he tries to “sing” too. The hammer can’t hurt anything but I think it’s time to find a drum. Thanks!!
Posting schema- where the child wants to insert items like coins, cards or other objects in containers. Support that by giving them a piggy bank to put in coins or a box with a hole to put in poker chips!

Children dont necessarily have to be spoken to "like children". Explain to them there is a time and place for things. Some things okay at home are not okay in public. My 4 year old has know since he was 2 that when we are at the library, we use a softer voice than most places. That's coming from a kid who's "inside voice" is the equal decibel to a jet plane

@@loracorwyn3713 oh! I'm just not able to figure out what schema my daughter is in. Do kids skip some schemas? Like I've never seen her line things up or connect them and never seen her upside down. I feel like she has always been in the trajectory schema she loves slides and speeding on her scooter and the only thing she ever did with her toys was throw them out of sight.
greengumgrows she probably just had been processing them in a less obvious way then the examples given. From what I’ve read for instance the lining up schema can also be expressed by separating things by colours, like putting all blue blocks in a pile and red in another etc or placing all round objects into a basket and all square objects into another one.
