I went up Makara Peak yesterday to do North Face... Met Lizzie Varley & friends at the base just finishing their run. Arrived in closing clear sky, it was drizzling on the way up while I was under tree cover, cleared up by the time I was half way up and out of the shelter, was clear at the top... Only to find North Face has been closed for maintenance... I hope they don't downgrade it too badly, there's not really any other track like it with its rocky rollable run... So I did Peak Flow... after dropping off the ridge at the top muster area.. to find my forks bottom out... sigh, no fork pump on board... So i ran Peak and Smokin' (and started getting frame strike there and lower Starfish.... and just to add insult to the run... half way down lower Starfish was closed for maintenance with no warning at the top... so climbed up the link to SWIGG (I was looking forward to Starfish lower in the wet...) Got to the bottom and Wellingtons "If you don't like the weather, wait a minute" kicked in and a torrential downpour kicked in just as I got back to the van... Couldn't have planned the ride better (other than getting in earlier and getting a double ride). This run is one of my backbone rides at Makara... I'll often do this with a multi loop of Smokin' in the middle. For those who haven't tried, Smokin (from 05:40 to 09:48) ) can be linked by hanging right at 09:48, stay on the firebreak and right at the 1st side road, and your back at 04:20 It's only about 80m climb. If you stop on 3 Brothers Pt3 at 05:02 you can see the container below that you can see just up the track when you exit at 09:48
Yea i hope North Face doesnt get down-graded to much tho i feel it will. There is a replacement G4 in the works tho which should take the sting out of losing North Face as it was(i really enjoyed its rocky boney-ness💀). The Makara Peak Supporters/Trail builders have smashed it out of the park with Pohatu and Starfish so if the new G4 is anything like those then it will be a mega run down to the bottom🤘
@@thesingletracksurfer If I was a millionaire.... I'd put in a gondola.... then... I'd make Peak flow... a PEAK FLOW.. (Remove the climb section at the top.. We've already climbed to the top and had a rest.. I need a 2nd one getting to the real flow... I'd add a side track to Lower Leaping Lizard to remove the road ride down the ridge... I'd put in a bypass (note bypass, not re-grade) on Vertigo as almost everyone could ride the top 2/3rds... and maybe loop back to the corkscrew. and I'd put a kids track down from the skills park (After making it a SKILLS PARK again. where are the skinnies, drops etc.) so kids can ride down to the Lazy Fern.. Ohhh and I even checked out a "Darn I forgot something" return from the 1st seat up Koru onto LiveWires.. ok it's dark blue but still better than having to go right up to the top of SWIGG to "Get your sunnies/gloves/courage" that you left in the car. But 1st I'd build a huge skills and steps down Murchison St Owhiro Bay... because I want a DROP park. Maybe I should just get off my fat butt and lend a hand... q8)
GAHHHH! You could almost see us with the trail builders. That was the last trail building sesh we did as one of the higher-ups would always want to remove a few of the features we built with the other legends. He had been doing it to many people! Asking us to do his dirty work (which we were glad to do) and then wanting to remove it so it went HIS (not as good) way. Not to name names, but he was pissing us (and many others) off for AAAAAGES. He was an ungrateful bugger.
@@thesingletracksurfer Yes Pōhatu. The same problem was happening when me and my family helped generously with middle Starfish. We cleared the bush, mulch and trees throughout the ENTIRE trail over the Christmas period.. and he was ungrateful.
@@mtbwithsmudgespud2416 Sounds a bit stink aye. Pohatu and Starfish are a couple of stunning bits of trail so kudo's to you and all involved in the creation
Seems like Peak Flow gets battered like Superplus with all it's traffic and weathering with no shelter. still an awesome trail and linking it onto Starfish is even better
Yea it does get pretty beaten up. The soon to be re-opened G3 North Face should take a bit of traffic off of Peak Flow. Pohatu on to Starfish is a siiiiiiiick G4 🤮
This is the G3 drop down from the summit straight back to the car park. There are other trail combo’s heading back to the car park which of g3 G4 or G5. The climb up to the summit is 45 minutes to an hour with nothing to strenuous(koru/Sally Alley/Upswing/Aratihi)
It takes a 50yo about an hour to the top (via Koru) on a freeride downhill bike with only 2-3 heart attacks. You can loop Smokin as the climb back to the top of '3 Brothers Pt 3' is about 15 mins on a well graded firebreak. www.trailforks.com/trails/koru/ then www.trailforks.com/trails/sally-alley/ then www.trailforks.com/trails/upswing/

Rebuild opened in October and he says in the video 'rebuilt a couple of months ago, so I rekcon January ish this year. Right now it is a mudslide!
What he^^ said 🤣
That this track a loop from the car park? If so how long does it take roughly to pedal to the top? Also, are there other tracks to do at makara peak?
