Can a HARDTAIL MTB survive Trickle Falls | Makara Peak original gnarly line

  • Trickle Falls is nothing but solid, technical Black Diamond riding, right from rock slab roll in that filters out the unprepared, to the waterfall drop that gives the track its name. Tackling it on a hardtail isn't exactly recommended, a point reinforced for me when I went over the bars when I tried this beast last year. Let's see if I can clean it on my third attempt.
The Bike: Rocky Mountail Growler 40 | XL Frame | 29er | 140mm Pike Ultimate Fork | Maxxis Minion Tires | SLX 4 Piston Brakes 203mm/180mm Rotors
The Rider: A bit of a rookie, started mountain biking March 2021. Pushing my limits on the Wellington Tech ever since.

Video footage never does justice on how steep the entrance actually is

    Sick trail man.
I really like this type of trail, where we can train our skills.

What an awesome trail. I'm currently building up my Growler 20. Best thing I ever did to it was to replace the front forks.

Mate that is a SOLID effort! I'm in Welly too and I've been riding more and more over the last year or so on a old XC hard tail, and thinking of upgrading my bike. I'm torn between getting a real good hard tail or a budget spec full suspension bike.
RUclips obviously knows that I'm toying with the idea of a hard tail upgrade and showed me this video. Seeing you tackle trickle falls (video really doesn't do it justice) on a hard tail has made me decide I'm going to go HT haha.
Have you been happy with the Pike for the wellington terrain? My gut feeling at the moment is go to for a Canyon Stoic 4, 29er aggressive hard tail and it comes with a Pike Select.

      Cheers mate!
Yeah, I'm a big fan of the Pike. I upgraded in November after the stock Suntour 140mm packed it in. Haven't had any issues since the upgrade.
Love to see more agro hardtails out on the trails, seems like just about everyone is riding $8k + worth of Enduro bike or eBike. Personally I don't think it makes you more capable, just faster and maybe a bit more confident feeling like you can survive surprise hits.

@@phillipwhite7965 yeah I agree. I quite fancy being a hard tail hero! Being on a hard tail surely just makes you a better rider and makes even the grade 3s a bit more fun.
Not to mention the cost saving. I really don't want to spend that much money on a bike. I'm not trying to be a professional downhill racer. Just looking to have a bit of fun while getting fitter ha.
Thanks for the advice re the fork. You've help solidified what I think my next bike will be :-)
