Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is a beloved game from my childhood. After replaying the very flawed remaster available on Nintendo Switch/PS4, I decided to make a video talking about how brilliant the soundtrack is while attempting to pinpoint the musical instruments and tone that the game executes so flawlessly!
If you're interested in playing Final Fantasy 11 (which I HIGHLY recommend), then hit me up on Twitter and I'll help you get started. :) In the meantime, here's a playlist showcasing how good the music is: • FFXI OST

Yes you did say that out loud.

Wow! Great Stuff!
Link’s Awakening for Switch, Wind Waker, and Genshin Impact will probably want a call. I know that outside of wind waker, the instrument variety isn’t as nearly as vast as Crystal Chronicles 1, but it’s all incredibly good.

You about Lynari Desert: "It's nothing to write home about."
Me, as a musician, struggling with the INSANITY of this piece: "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!"
I swear to God, it switches tempo mid-phrase. MID-F*CKING-PHRASE!
@@ActiveAdvocate1 Prog music will do that to ya.
(Or Folk Prog in this case hehe) ^^
its always really nice hearing these directed tours through soundscapes that normally would go unnoticed or just enjoyed at the surface-level.
I was looking for this video for 20 years
also there is this sound in the opening that sounds like if you are bending a saw on its flat side rapidly but its a drum and its played along with the bongos? it does not sound metalic , I always wanted to know what it was
I think I know the one you’re talking about but idr off the top of my head
@@sikeIgaita Udu?
@SlyHikari03 HOLY thanks alot I was still looking for it
@@sikeIgaita no problem!
I love that drum.
It has a very buoyant and bubbly quality to it, and its all over this soundtrack.
Glad a fellow percussionist could help!
Cheers!
criminally underrated ost - one of the best EVER in any video game !😭❤
This video unironically just helped me with my musicology class.
Thanks chase
A bit late to this but this game is such an underappreciated gem! We actually managed to get the four GBA multiplayer thing going back on the Gamecube and it was such a blast! The soundtrack is an absolute masterpiece by Kumi Tanioka as well. Always happy to see someone giving it some love.
@@Spaceroast ayy.
Wassup spaceroast!
The memories are all coming back. I still have my Gamecube copy. And my Gamecube. And both my and my brother's GBA's. And our link cables. He didn't enjoy the game, but I was a fan. I remember hearing this game was wildly unpopular, but I'm glad other people appreciated the music as much as I did. Never knew about all these instruments, though. It's really fascinating. It's unfortunate the remaster isn't that great, I'm literally just finding out about it in this video, but... THEY CALL HIM FLIPPER! FLIPPER! FASTER THAN LIGHT-NING!
Speaking of De Nam, I remember getting a letter from him every year telling me to go to Conall Curach, and it was always the same letter. I'd beat up the same Sahagin and get the same headband. I might be misremembering but I don't think I am. While I'm at it, I didn't know people thought De Nam was eaten by a monster. I thought it was very clear he turned into one (and I encouraged him ;_;). That also made me think if he turned into a monster because of the miasma, then most or all of the ones in Tida are its former inhabitants.
I'm so happy you put the musical credits in the description. Hearing about all of those instruments was so fascinating.
Amazing video, dude! It tickles me pink to see someone give some much needed love this incredible OST. I was a bit disappointed my personal favorite track, Twilight in Dreamland (the Mushroom Forest theme) got skipped over, but the lesson on the instruments and analyses on all the other killer tracks more than make up for its exclusion! Keep up the good work!
Yeah I didn’t have much to say about Mushroom Forest but I’m glad you liked the rest!
You're really robust at music analysis, keep it up man!
I never beat this game but I STILL listen to the soundtrack. What an excellent video. I knew with your focus on musical analysis in your videos that this was going to be a treat and was not disappointed.
I really enjoy how you're able to break down and appreciate the individual elements of a game's music, sound design, voice acting, and general atmosphere. I don't see too many other game analysts that take the time to go through that level of detail, often passing over these elements as something generally expected. It's nice to see some attention given to the work of and impact of those behind the craft.
Hooray, a new video! Wonderful work as always, I'm excited to see the FF11 video. I didn't know that there was another FF MMORPG, I thought there was only 14. Interested to hear about it :)
I only got to rent this game a couple times for Blockbuster back when I was 13 as well, but for the last 17 years the soundtrack has stayed with me. I'm glad that you covered this so I'm not surprised, and I think you are analysis was masterful. You make wonderful videos and I hope to one day see a follow up to Pokemon what happened. Thanks!
Oh goodness, forgive the spelling and grammar errors. I was using talk-to-text and must have not been annunciating as clearly as I should have. I swear I'm not illiterate!

One of my favourite soundtracks.
Really nice to see some musical analysis of it!
so much love and work in this video. thank you.
Comments like these keep me going. Thank YOU!
The quickness of the bagpipes fucking killed me
I would say that Leuda's theme "Leaving the Body Freely" is not progressive classical, but is evoking Bulgarian folk music. In Bulgarian folk dances an asymmetrical rhythm is used to accommodate short and long steps. Short beats are 2 beats and long beats 3 corresponding to long and short steps. The song in question has a rhythm of short-short-long (7/8), that is pretty common in Bulgarian folk.
Those are some really good notes. I’d love to work with someone like you who knows a lot about this stuff since my old musically-accomplished friend got too busy with his career to help me out much. If that sounds like something you might be interested in then hit me up on Twitter or shoot me an email!
y'know i always pictured you more as a yuke player. beautiful video btw excellent analysis :)
8:20 I heard the name plenty before but I had no idea what it was before the Down the Rabbit Hole video on it. Still not sure why a documentary series on old drama was talking about a musical instrument though.
Always good content, thank you!
I always avoided FF11 based on reviews from friends and the general idea of it being an MMO but hearing that the same composer worked on the soundtrack now I HAVE TO check it out
7:05 the bagpipe
Hi there, Chase!
Quick Note:
For percussion, they also use Udu (the deep "bubbly/bouncy" drum in Sleeping Treasure in the sand, Departure, Aiming Towards the new world) and Tabla (lower drum heard as a one shot in Monster Dance -Rondo as well as the higher drum in echoes at the mountain peak)
From a percussionist at heart, i feel like you missed these.
Although, you got alot of the medieval stuff correct, that I'll give ya.
I mean, considering there is a-lot of stuff in the arrangements, its easy to overlook these.
@SlyHikari03 Thanks for pointing these out! Always wanna learn more about obscure music stuff.
@ no problem, you could probably pin this if you want (or do a follow up vid idk).
Cheers!
F*** yes, I wait for you content with much happiness. Hope you have been well and I am already inpatient waiting for your next video. Just finished it and wanted to say thanks for bringing up tactics, one of my favorite games....maybe a video you will do? The music is amazing 🤔🤔🤔
Thank you for this video. This was one of my favorite games and I'm starting out as a hobbyist producer.
Bruh, the hurdy gurdy is the most beautiful instrument on the planet and I will fight anyone who says otherwise! Jk. But I really enjoy listening to you talk about music. You do an incredible job of putting into words how the music feels. Keep up the good work Mr. Face
This. Black Sails opening theme? So good.

8:25 that song is called omen is available on iTunes :3
Now I know what RUclips video I'm going to use as a sleep-aid for the next month.
The song from the Village of Dali always reminded me of the song in Fields of Fum/Berna Village from MHG and the town itself also has a similar vibe. Same with the Fisherman’s Horizon or whatever it’s called in FFVIII.
I just got the game. This is awesome timing!!
Love your content! Thank you for this blessing.
Very cool, seeing an analysis of this game's music, my favorite game soundtrack ever. It's so good, far better than the game itself haha (although I certainly do enjoy the game).
But why did you leave out some of the songs??? Where's In the Gloomy Darkness (or In the Midst of Sorrow's Gloom, depending on the translation), my single all-time favorite video game track? Where are any of the songs from the final area?
I usually only comment on standout songs because to cover every single track would seem a bit excessive and unnecessary, and the video was already running pretty long, so I didn't want to drag it out. And to add anything else would have pissed off my sponsor, who had a firm deadline for the video's completion.
But I'm glad you liked the video overall!
Well now I know 23 more instruments then before maybe more.
Never played this game but I do love your analysis videos so I'm gonna watch it regardless!!!
Anyway, I hope you have a good day, stay safe and be sure to drink water
By far still my favorite ost for a game
Same tbh
30:50 Yeah but I love how melancholic the game is tbh. I was gonna mention some of my favorites but I have a lot of favorites so I'll narrow it down to my very top favorites in no particular order:
conall curach is my favorite dungeon (yes I'm serious btw) and I also love its theme, "voice of wind, song of time" from Selepation cave (another good dungeon), "eternal oath", "within the gloomy darkness", the new track they added to cycle 2 of Veo lu sluice don't remember the name of it, maybe "dried sluice" but don't remember it's if that's the official name, and "when the northern sky is clear" from Rebena te ra.
Sad you didn't talk about all the tracks but it's ok, I glad someone acknowledged how good this soundtrack is tbh.
Oooh, eternal oath!
That tune uses the same percussion loop as Krazoa Palace from Star Fox Adventures btw.
Lol pardon me and this HUGE wall of text, but I just wanted to write a comment which ended up getting kind of long. I do not expect you or anyone to read through it, but hey... may as well just throw my thoughts out there.
I loved this game growing up so much. The art style and especially the music were big parts of what drew me in and kept me coming back over the years. I loved the gameplay of course, and had many late nights with friends over night to play some multiplayer, but that music... I actually ended up ordering the OST on Amazon. Got the disc sitting up in my room and ripped onto my MP3 player disguised as a phone.
I wish the Remaster has local co-op, and better online, but alas... PHONES had to go and screw it up (at least I believe that was the reason?)
I still have my original Gamecube copy, but I am happy to have a version of the game I could enjoy on my Switch though. I never ended up beating the game as a kid sadly. I just loved revisiting old dungeons or playing clean saves when I wanted to try out a new type of character, but maybe I should sit down sometime soon and try to see it through to the end.
I've always been kind of sad that Crystal Chronicles never received a proper sequel or successor. I know the DS games and Crystal Bearers exist, but they never captured the feeling the original had or even had the same gameplay. The DS ones were sort of close in their top-down perspective, but I'd have loved to see something more akin to the Gamecube release, with a more refined formula.
After hearing you talk about FFXI and the soundtrack to that too, I clicked the link and picked out a few songs. Gustaberg, Heaven's Tower, and Ronfaure were three of my favourites out of the small selection I went through. I kind of want to try the game out now simply because I'd love to experience the music in the game itself. I look forward to your XI video (assuming you're still working on it), and everything you have to say about it. I'm quite interested in the way people in the comments on the video talk about the game too, at least from what little I've skimmed through. It sounds a lot more sandbox than other MMOs, and most definitely sounds as if it's a totally different experience than FFXIV.
I've mentioned in EFAP chat a few times about playing XIV while you were on, and I totally understand why you don't like the game after you briefly explained it to me on one of Metal's streams (I had a similar feeling towards Star Wars - The Old Republic in comparison to Star Wars Galaxies - Jump to Lightspeed). I got my own gripes with XIV too, and I'm not one of those people who tries to say it's an amazing/life changing game, but I still love the game/am not bothered too much by it's shortcomings (I apologize if I am potentially being annoying with this tangent lol).
In regards to FFXI, I was curious if you still play the game currently on Official Servers since you've made this video? I recall in one EFAP hearing you mention a Private Server? I'd love to try the game, but I'm just a little bit unsure about jumping into another Subscription based game at the moment. If there is a Private Server you could try the game out through however, I'd absolutely love to give it a shot just based off the music/some of the things I've briefly read alone. I know you say to @ you on Twitter, but I don't use that site anymore lol. I don't know if you'll ever read this, but if you do... :3 How may I jump in? Also awesome video. I am wish I had known about it sooner, but RUclips did not see fit to remind me of it's existence. Better late than never I suppose.
Dammit, Chase! I just got done playing through FFXI for 3 months. Finally able to solo the story missions and see so much more of the game I loved ~15 years ago. Why you gotta go and invite me to go back again when I just cancelled my sub?!
Also, great video. My friends and I loved FFCC years ago. We were all stoked and subsequently let down with the announcement and release state of the remake. This soundtrack is pinned in our discord as one of the many we listen to collectively while hanging out. That said, I was so excited to get your take on it since you always enjoy getting into the details on music and sound design in your videos.
Needing all of these game consoles and periferals is wild to think about nowadayd, but it was the way in the early 2000s
And friends. Don't forget friends. The true Cerberus of gatekeeping.
You have no idea how I agree with what you said in the beginning, I love this game to bits and I know it has flaws but I enjoyed the hell out of it the million times, single player of course because the stars had to perfectly align to get my one friend to play with me, so I've always liked playing it alone, plus the music makes a really good relaxing ambiance when I play alone but that's a me thing, and I replayed it again when the remastered came and enjoyed it again as well.
While I love everything about it, the music, story, atmosphere and the relaxing ambiance makes it even better, the ost it's my favorite FF ost ever, and one my favorites in general.
In exam hell, going to watch this around 2am when I get done for the day XD
Great review chase 👏
Kumi Tanioka is a genius! I absolutely love her work. She makes world music very tangible.
Exactly!
Thats why i love her.
Her instrument choices are nice too
(Especially the Percussion, I love when she gets out the Udu and Tabla in some songs, they are my favorite percussion instruments btw)
Hey Chase, I don’t know when you’ll be on EFAP again so I thought I’d comment here. Just wanted to say thank you for going to bat for Wolf on that Noodle video. Considering how long ago Wolf left, it’s really upsetting to see people blindly spreading those lies today. It really means a lot that you spoke up about it even if Noodle is too cowardly to retract what he said.
I’d say there should be videos made to defend Wolf, but I imagine that would just cause more pot-stirring and get him stressed out all over again. I’m just glad someone with some kind of reach was willing to speak up. I’m sure if he knows, he appreciates it as well.
Great stuff! I learned about a lot of new instruments because of this xd
Altough Crystal Chronicles isn't really my type of game, I'm defenitely going to give the OST a listen!
Dude,
Check out my comment.
Theres alot of instruments left out of this video that i picked up on listening to the OST.

Both Final Fantasy Tactics AND Final Fantasy Tactics Advance have some really amazing dark themes in their stories. Final Fantasy Tactics or War Of The Lions if you're playing the remake is basically Game Of Thrones in a Final Fantasy Medieval universe with you playing John Snow except instead of White Walkers you have Soul Possessing Demons.
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance however is an Isekai (This was actually surprising back then!) with a group of friends/family getting teleported into an Final Fantasy world. Your protagonist wants to go back and thus begins their quest but it becomes apparent very quickly that the other members of his family/friends group are happier in the world and this leads to some really sad stuff. I honestly felt guilty finishing the game.
I was lucky enough to have friends to play this with. I ended up supplying most of the cables (I have 2 copies of Pokemon Box and never used it! It was worth it for the memory card and cables!) and the GCN but man we played this A LOT! Towards the end of it life I bought 2 GBA SP's and a friends GBA super cheap just so if I ever had the opportunity to play it again I could.
Hey bud love your vid, I got the game and could use some help getting the meteor ring at the rainy ruins. Lmk if you can help me complete my artifact collections.
@@ChaseFace I added ya! I only need 3 artifacts left for silkies
Glad I'm not alone in the uncanny feeling I get from the re-recording of Morning Light, it just feels wrong
@@Sta_cotto i like the instrument,
Not so much the vocals tbh.
@SlyHikari03 yeah, it's really the vocals that ruin it for me
This didn't show up in my subscriptions for some reason
hard disagree on Sleeping Treasure In The Sand. When I played the game as a kid, Lynari Desert was the first dungeon I had problems with clearing and its music will forever be in the back of my mind as the theme when the real game starts.
Good content as always. If only the game was as good as it's music and art style.
7 months later and still no FFXI video. I know the feeling man.
I had to jump servers when Eden server started declining. :( I’ll make the video eventually but I don’t want to rush it, so I’ll make other videos until then.
Edit: I jumped to Wings and then Horizon but I noticed a disturbing trend in which 90% of players I'd encounter were elitist, impatient and otherwise very rude, so I ended up making a difficult decision to cancel the video, especially since it would have originally been a recommendation video, which would be hard to do for a game that essentially only exists as either a watered-down solo experience (retail), or a hardcore, unsustainable multiplayer-only experience with droves of unfriendly neckbeards who harass people off of the server. :(
Listen to Runaway by Beats Antique. You'll love it if you're interested in this sound.
good video, I'd try the game out but it seems that it's been removed from my country due to shitty netcode, that was 3 months ago and no updates so far.
they removed it from the Australia switch store ;(
like thankfully ive got the game cube version but still its one of my favorite ff games and the music was what won me over in the first place
I know I'm a brat to you on Twitter but I really enjoyed the video. Keep it up.
probably would have liked this game as a kid, but I was too busy at that time with split screen Phantasy Star Online and Melee.
Good video, post more stuff.
Listening to people in 2020 talking about starting to play FF11... it took a whole year to get to level 75 back then when I started (which was the maximum level during that time). Also, one of my favorite soundtracks in general, you really can recognize his style in other soundtracks as well (Like El Shaddai, and some of those SaGa remakes)
... needless to say FFCC's soundtrack is also one of my favorites with Veo lu sluice being on top of my list! (The Crystal Bearers got a pretty cool tango version of that song)
Come back, the level cap is 99 now!
@@ChaseFace I came back a couple of years later when it was already 99. I quit playing shortly after Seekers of Adoulin was released D: ... Now I sunk way too deep into FF14. I'm sure one day I will install it again. (I wonder if my character still exists)
