In this Castlevania, John Morris can only hit straight forward while on the ground but in multiple direction while in the air. Eric Lecarde is the opposite. They both have their pros and cons, which gives us a reason to try both characters. This game is so good and underrated.
Too bad Konami cut some others interesting characters with unique playstyle for Bloodlines : a big dude with a hammer and a ninja girl.
@@MidoseitoAkage what?
true, these guys didn't do it justice
Everything is underrated
The soundtrack of this game... I just can't get enough of it
The main characters movements look cheesy I think that brings the game down a few notches. They shouldve made him move
more seriously like other Castlevanias
Back when Konami wasn't bullshit.
+Eternal Kick Yeah...what happened to you, Konami? You used to be cool!
+wchan39 +Konami
Damn, homie
In high school you was the man, homie
The fuck happened to you?
+Eternal Kick i blame it on metal gear games.
+Edwin Contreras immortal technique?
+DJPlace007 I blame it on their CEO wanting to focus on gambling and cutting all console game development forever.
I think they're too hard on this game. It's a fantastic Castlevania game.
+qmto This is the best Castlevania game for me. And yeah the spear is better than the whip.
VirusRonsen82 What did you expect from nintendo fanboys? Sega was underrated at the time but better. Maybe some games were better but Bram Stoker's dracula was a masterpiece for Sega while it sucked ass for SNES.
+qmto They were really honest about being spoiled by SC4, not fanboyish as some say. Bloodlines is fantastic but SC4 spoils the player so every other contemporary felt like "JUST not as good".
Smoother controls, jump directional influence, whip OP, more SFX due to SNES sound hardware, overall easier (but still fair) difficulty... The list goes on
Totally! This is the one I grew up playing since I had a Genesis
+skuarf
-whip OP
Which ruins the balance of the game
-SNES sound hardware
Yet managed to have worse music than Bloodlines
-overall easier (but still fair) difficulty
Yeah, brokenly-easy, triple boomerang and OP whip triviliaze any boss in the game
-Smoother controls, jump directional influence
Fixed controls are more solid for platforming and better for aereal combat than loose jump mechanics
Why it's better again?
Think it's your controller. This game controls great.
+One Man Parade i think this is better than 4 tbh its closer to the original games. I think mike and james just suck at games they couldn't even get to level 3 on splatterhouse.
+mrmong Didn't they beat Ghost and Goblins?
+SHaBLaM BaLaM they did
+SHaBLaM BaLaM They're only good at the games they played a lot when growing up. Every time they play a hard game that's new to them or that they didn't play that much growing up, you'll see them struggling before it even gets hard.
***** Yes input lag could make things more difficult, i use a SCART lead with an old CRT television for my megadrive so i don't get this problem
I don't know about anyone else, but I rate Bloodlines over SCIV.
The sub weapon upgrades in this game are insane.
This is a truly underratred Castlevania game i actually play this more than 4. I enjoy both a lot.
Nah. 4 is better
Hell no . Super 4 is the best
I still think 4 is better, but MAN is this game AMAZING!
I give it a 3 way tie with Dracula X...it's Castlevania...32 bit and down, you can't go wrong!
I just wish they'd made a game for the Sega Master System.
Good pick. "Zombies Ate My Neighbors" co-op for next week.
There are many horror references that are perfect to play around Monster Madness.
Yes, I've been waiting for that. Such a great game.
+Intimidation Imagine all the things James will talk about during it?
+Intimidation Mike's already down a stream of that, so I'm not sure if they'll play it. They might, though.
+JamerTheGamer
I've seen both streams but it deserves to get the co-op treatment with James.
+Intimidation mike streamed zombies ate my neighbors? when was that and where can i watch it?
One of my favorite games of the Sega Genesis. Hands down !
I dont know how you guys think this game looks worse than super castlevania 4... it has a lot more animations and better looking levels and scenery. also i didnt hear you guys talking about it but john can actually swing with his whip from the ceilings without the need of rings like in SC4. also john and eric have different stages within the levels and thats because john can swing with his whip and eric can do the super jump with his spear so its very innovative with that as well. great game overall
I don’t get it either. They’re comparing what is basically a launch SNES game to a game that pushed the Genesis to its limits and are somehow twisting it like a pretzel to make it seem like SC4 is the better looking game. That just flat out isn’t true. Unless they just prefer the art direction. Which is subjective.
@Justin Y. You are asssssssss!!!! Put on some cologne you stinky bastard!!!
@Just¡n Y. sc4 is asssssssssss
James, the platform at the top during 3:14 is so John can use his whip to swing across the room. It has an added effect where John puts his legs forward and kicks any enemy in his way while swinging.
Yeah but....how do you reach it?
And Eric has this ability where if you hold the down button for a couple of seconds he jumps up really high
@@facufeg86 you can whip upwards when you jump.
@@facufeg86 you can whip in any direction like in S4 but only in the air, on ground its like other Castlevanias
I'm a big fan and enjoy all the stuff you guys do for us. While I respect your opinions, watching you two play anything that isn't Nintendo is rough because you guys are pretty heavily bias. I don't blame you for being fans of Nintendo, but I wish I could watch you play games on Sega or Sony without hearing you complain about how much better you think Nintendo is. Just my two cents.
Just my two *Read more*
cents.
p.s. I agree, MegaMan Legends and Cv:SOTN are gold, and so is Bloodlines and arguably one of the best installments based immediately after it, Portrait of Ruin.
So true, only 30 seconds in of gameplay they say Castlevania on Nintendo is better before even seeing 1/3 of the full game lol
That's some MAJOR nostalgic bias right there, considering many people would consider Bloodlines and Rondo of Blood the better Castlevania games, so it's not like it's clear cut better as they are prematurely suggesting...
They didn't even play the upside down stage, they missed on so many badass aspects of the game. Bloodlines is original AF
@@diffusewings4937 it's the older console so the hardware was outdated. Still had stereo sound and generally a much better framerate.
*biased
This is my fav castlevania game.
As much as I respect AVGN and Mikes opinion, I completely disagree with bloodlines being the lesser when comparing to CV4. I recommend people try the bloodlines with an opponent mind as its own castlevania. The whip in CV4 doesnt feel accurate, it just feels overpowered. If anything CV4 is the blacksheep of the series since in no other CV game does the main character have the ability to whip in all directions. Egoraptor has a good video about CV4 explaining some of the faults. "Console Wars" does a direct comparison between the 2 which actually goes in depth So i recommend watching that for a proper comparison.
^^ he isn't nitpicking he does make a very valid point, the whip is so overpowered the side weapons are practically useless and the game is just too damn easy.
The controls in Bloodlines felt way smoother to me. I'm playing CV4 now and it's super clunky control wise for me. Some jumps are taking me forever......
One of my top 3 favorite 'Castlevania' games! Definitely an excellent, re-playable game.
John Morris (whip) and Eric Lecarde (spear) also have different moves which means they take different paths through some levels. Morris can swing with his whip and Eric can super jump. The super jump might be able to reach the platform they talk about at 3:14 but I've never tried it.
+Josh W No, the platform at boss 1 is there for John to attach his whip and swing. I'm surprised they couldn't figure that out.
2:17 funny how he walks up to the cracked wall like he’s gunna break it up for the item, but then just walks away
Imagine having the Belmonts round for dinner. They'd be whipping candles and eating giant pork chops
Maverick4023 ...which they found by taking a stud detector and smashing every section of wall that didn't set it off. ;~P LOL
😂🤣
The *OST* of this game is pretty legendary too!!
This is my favorite Castlevania, mostly because I grew up with a Megadrive. I have also found that Eric is much more useful than Simon, he can actually use his spear in 6 directions and has his own version of a double jump.
Am i the only one who like this game better than Super Castlevania 4?
no, there's others who feel the need to announce they like this game more than 4, like it matters somehow
+Fizzbizz To both of you, to each their own is the watchword.
+ultragarrison No you aren't
+ultragarrison Imo, the only advantage Super Castlevania 4 has over this game is the fact that you can whip in all directions.
+ultragarrison Nope. I also prefer this one.
There's just something comforting about watching these guys play old games. It reminds me of being a kid and going to family parties where my older cousins would be playing NES and trying to beat a game.
Bloodlines is a great game, and the fact that it was a Sega exclusive on the console that was widely said to be inferior to SNES, I think it's a marvelous game!
A lot of people claim the SNES had superior sound, and I'm not going to deny that, but it wasn't the superior everytime. There were a few games on Genesis that had great audio, and I honestly prefer Bloodlines soundtrack over CV4.
I don't always agree with James or Mike on what makes a shitty game, but this time I was just plain disappointed. It was like they just were not going to cut it any slack for being on the Genesis.
I don't know about anyone else, but the sound of button pressing never gets old to me.
+Rainbow Dragonite What you are talking about it is called "ASMR" :) Look it up!
3:15 That platform's actually there because if you whip diagonally up at it, you can swing from your whip like in Castlevania IV. Except here you can swing from any ceiling with your whip, not just specific hooks like in IV.
You also become invincible while swinging and can deal damage to enemies while swinging, which is why that platform's there. It's another way you can deal damage to the boss.
I think this looks MUCH better than CV4 actually. Bloodlines has an art style that's closer to the NES games with great use of colours. CV4 tries too hard to look realistic and ends up just looking grey and murky in most places. Sure, it was probably impressive at the time, but the more stylised look of Bloodlines has aged much better.
I'm kinda bummed they didn't bother to learn the whip-swinging mechanic. It's one of the cooler things about Bloodlines and adds another layer of strategy in how you tackle some parts of the game.
+Shuda87 Not to mention the ugly choppy animations of Castlevania 4.
shadowshinobi06 Sorry but no, enemies in Castlevania 4 has like 2 frames of walking animation most of the time, the sprites are good but the animations are NES tier so because of this mix they look like shit. In Bloodlines they have 6 or more frames of animations, and other animations like jumping, alternative attacks etc. Not to mention the multi-segmented enemies with very fluid animation.
As for the rest, it's just your opinion and honestly i don't care about it.
shadowshinobi06 Bloodlines is a better game for me and that's good enough, i don't even care about the graphics of either that much.
Bother to learn the whip swinging mechanic? They were too busy pissing all over the game to do that.
Am I the only one here who prefers Bloodlines over CV IV? Don't get me wrong, I love CV IV, but I like Bloodlines more. But my absolute favourites are Rondo of Blood / Dracula X Chronicles and Akumajou Densetsu.
I love how Mike ignored every single breakable wall, you'd think he was a complete noob to the 2D Castlevania games.
7:05 - There is a dragon is Slavic mythology that has three heads.
+Rinso Zmei Gorynych, yeah.
Level design blows super castlevania 4 out the water.
+Nintariz I wouldnt know; I haven't had a genesis in ages. I dont collect retro games unless its for nostalgia. basically the classic snes offerings.
Well, thanks for your opinion...
... i guess ?
+David lechevalier im specifically referring to how they're shit talking bloodlines and blowing super castlevania 4. dont get butthurt, snes fanboy.
I dont even have a genesis, dude. Anyways, I think the games are more or less equal. each excelling at different things.
Ruby Williams Anti UTTP Stop bitching about it.
wow those controller really sound like they can take a beating
They certainly can. I have one from a thrift store, had some messed up buttons, and it still works perfectly. Plus I'm fairly rough on controllers so there's that
+ori zach also, the genesis controllers were rediculously noisy, but yeah, i guess they were almost as sturdy as the nes controllers
+peanut4745 aw I was just about t say tht too lol
Genesis Controllers were (and still are) goddamn durable. They were designed that way.
The sound of the crackling Genesis (Mega Drive in my case though) controller always makes me feel nostalgic.
Mike is a GG Allen fan apparently, I like that. This is actually in my top 5 Castlevania games, really like this one.
how that man was never killed is beyond me. Crazy man he was.
As Italian, i like the perfect recreation of the tower of Pisa.
Best James & Mike Mondays moment: "TIME TO GET BEAT, BOY!" from Highlander on the CD-I.
This was an unbelievable game when I was in my early teens, I remember my friends and I liking it way better than the other Castlevania games and wanting something with movements like bloodlines and non-traditional characters. Finally, after this, we got Symphony. I was blown away by this game and difficulty.
lol you guys are great, but i've played the shit out of Castlevania: Bloodlines and Castlevania IV. and never once did i think IV was a more superior game in any way, just different. bloodlines is really unlike any game i've ever played. you guys make my 20 year old console war blood rage sometimes. hahah
Old comment but AGREED
For genesis, the graphics on this game are really outstanding. For this game and Contra Hard Corps (another game I'd like to see James and Mike play), Konami really pushed the system to it's limits.
+soggytoast111 That's because you haven't played Alien Soldier.
@@Maru96 i played it. it's pretty fun but it never stood out to me as that visually impressive. visuals are slightly above average, not at the level of bloodlines or hard corps.
@@Jack_80 Nah Bloodlines looks b-tier compared to Alien Soldier, maybe you don't like the art-style but on a technical level it's one of the best in the system. The multi-segment animation particularly is superior to Bloodlines.
Watching this took me back. The music in this game is amazing.
11:53 "the moral of the story is that James is Batman"
"Okay."
''Killed the shit demon from hell.'' -Mike 2015
Bloodlines and SOTN were my two childhood Castlevania games
Sorry to say but Castlevania 4s control scheme makes the game less challenging. 4 doesn't get hard until near the end.
+MrZurata Some would say it's fine that SCV4 is less challenging because the game is better built around the 8-direction whip, which is...actually something I massively disagree with. Well, I mean they DID but by forgetting to change the sub-weapons, they made everything but the Cross worthless because the whip now has the length of half the screen (so fuck the Knife) and can go anywhere (so the Axe's overhead arc is needless and you can jump and whip down instead of waste Holy Water).
shadowshinobi06 Well, I said everything BUT the Cross. XD
this one looks cool as well castlevania bloodlines
Bullshit, I’ve died multitudes of times and I’ve played every single classicvania
The original game was released in Japan in 1986, which is why Bloodlines seems older than Castlevania IV.
This made my monday. Thank you. Here, take this grape!
WHAT A DUCK ARE YOU DOING HERE DUCKY?! go back to your lake xD
No! The old lady who used to feed me died :(
+A Duck What?! are you talking about.... Granny Goose?! D:
+A Duck say...got any grapes?
+A Duck People like grapes
I played through this game not that long ago. I loved every moment of it from beginning to end.
unfortunately Genesis never got a Goemon or a Gradius game
at least we got Sparkster though
+Adrian Duran sparkster was awesome. Never played the original, but the sequel had me hooked.
***** Also Kid Chameleon in the forest levels had water reflections in the background.
+Harperlarp the music of pasword and stage 3 is so epic ......that game make me like my GENESIS
+gurvmlk I only played them briefly and always forget which one I actually liked because of that.
I actually like the graphics in this game better tha SCV4's
Same and the music is better too
Bloodlines' graphics are objectively superior. Art style on the other hand is subjective, but I also prefer Bloodlines in that respect.
Probably because you're in the game lol. (I do agree though.)
intergalactic24 the music is no where close to castlevania 4s awesome music
can't believe it's already almost 3 years. I still think it started like a half a year ago.
Why the preference for Morris? Lecard atacks up and diagonnaly up, and he has a nice special atack with his spear. He can also pole jump very high, which is very cool. Besides, most the time Morris is using a chain with a ball and not a whip. The spear feels much better. I honestly don't get all the praise for Catlevania 4. It's nice for sure, but if you're gonna talk smoothiness, Symphony of the Night beats them all by a mile.
although i liked this video..and i like avgn...that hate on bloodlines was a bit much. I honestly feel its so much superior to castlevania 4.
It's not.
4 is just a little better
It's a 3 way tie, with Dracula X
This is better than castlevania 4
+mrmong I thought I was the only one!!
Dave Jewell someone who definitely doesn't own either game detected.
+mrmong rondo of blood and symphony of the night are better than both
+Purple Potion I just can't disagree wiht that.
+mrmong That doesn't make any sense.
EDIT: I guess you're talking about another conversation.
"Warlock" is another great game on Sega Genesis, filled with lot of supernatural creatures.
You play as sorcerer, and use you powers to take out werewolves, skeletons, gargoyles and other shit.
Definitely worth checking out.
Nothing will ever beat Simon Belmont's theme in Super Castlevania IV
+Danny Lewis Bloody Tears exists.
+Danny Lewis Most of the Castlevania music is so good int it.
@@MarginalSCThe Tragic Prince exists...
99.99% sure James and Mike smoke before their Monday gameplay sessions
They forgot too mention you can use the whip too swing like spider man in bloodlines alot of ppl overlook this
8:25
I would of laughed my ass of if the rock golem dudes last action before dying was giving Belmont the finger.
He isn't a belmont
The water reflection reminds me of that one stage in Rocket Knight Adventures.
what you guys gotta realize it's just their opinion. they didn't say bloodlines was a bad game, they just prefer super castlevania iv.
Precisely.
Super Castlevania IV is an exception to the rule when it comes to the whip. There are no less than six Castlevania games made in the original style that came after it that didn't allow you to whip in eight directions, as well as two remakes. For whatever reason Konami decided that Castlevania would be better if you were restricted in the directions that you could whip.
Also, this game isn't really ridiculous besides the skeletons in helmets. If you want ridiculous, try playing as the unlockable character Maria in Rondo of Blood, or play Castlevania 64 with the skeletons on motorbikes.
Man I miss this game, I grew up with a Genesis so this is the Castlevania of my childhood
I wish this video featured the in-game audio track instead of just randomly-placed music and hardly any sfx. People don't get a good idea of the audio part of the game.
I love how this game's story ties directly into the original Bram Stoker novel.
Please revisit this for James & Mike Mondays with Eric Lacarde. He's an awesome character to play as.
Now here comes Quincy Morris' relative, John!
You don't fuck with John!
Wipe out all 1.2 billion of the red Medusa heads
Astianatte592 However, in mainland Transylvania, there's secret project to transform deceased Dracula Shao Ping into ultimate weapon!
*I think this is much better than Castlevania 4 !!!*
this game is actually the best castle Vania game graphically and game play wise the only game that is slightly better is Dracula x
11:30 moms cats used to climb the wood wall to second floor and scream when they wanted to get in late evening, they totally knew where to find me at that time.
Bring James and Mike Mondays back
I love james and mike mondays. not only do you guys play video games but you talk about the game and other things related to it and also talk about random shit thats funny as fuck. its exactly like something me and my friends would do and thats why I love it. keep it up guys dont stop.
Sweat dripping into my mouth?
I'm sold, I'll take it!
I just realized how strong that damned whip is, whipping everything down to a pulp. He's taking Giant armored beasts to other crazy looking beasts and supernatural things with a piece of leather. I know he gets more interesting items along the way, but can't beat that whip. Some noble families passed down swords, these fuckers got that whip. I wonder if ever through the bloodlines one of them asked, awww really, the whip, seriously, and you want me to go where with that? ohhhh hell no. Belmont whip training camp, been around for generations.
2:10 "This castle is a creature of chaos. It can take many forms." - Alucard
I would be fine with this replacing AVGN. This series is hitting a sweet spot, I love it!!
Cracks on walls can reveal secrets when whipped.
remember when people bitched and complained about these vids?
how times have changed.
keep up the good work, you two. :D
+maxacorn They still suck at games though.
David Vanderhoeven and yet you are watching.
maxacorn I didn't say it's not entertaining now did I?
derp hr
+David Vanderhoeven I totally agree , also a huge James/AVGN/Mike/Cinemassacre fan , but yeah a lot of these J&M vids don't seem as if we are watching life long Gamers really getting into the game and giving something other than a bland run-through , i know a lot of what these guys do is all about the laughs , however just a tad same same
Hi guys i am from Holland and every monday when i come home from work i watch your james and mike during my dinner on RUclips! I see tips for great new games on you channel or feel the need to play games i already own!
Keep on the good work!
PS.
I am probably the only one in the world who actually prefers Blood Lines over IV :)
To be more specific:
The game is much darker, the soundtrack is much darker. The whole feeling fits the game Castlevania more. The soundtrack is actually prefered by a lot of people over de SNES version.
A day with Castlevania is always a good day. Except when there is a horrible night to have a curse...
Way better than 4
Beavis & Butt-Head was totally different on Sega and SNES as was Tournament Fighters. I'm glad to see you guys doing some more Sega titles here lately. I give Sega the #2 spot behind NES.
When Mike hears word "Genesis" he became so sad.
I am so fucking glad I'm not the only who was obsessed with bloodlines too. Such a great game way better than SCIV imo
Welcome to Castlevania, where you can whip it. Whip it good.
My personal favorite of all Castlevania games
When it comes to this and castlevania 4 everyone prefers the one they played back in the day. There's nothing between them in truth, they're both amazing.
SNES version may have looked better, but the Master Drive version seemed more fluid and grittier.
The super Nintendo is far superior. It had a better sound card and a much more complete color palette.
Nicholas Fanzo WHAT THE FUCK? Castlevania doesn’t fit well with spc700 too well , it’s too digitized, fm synthesis sounds so much better for scary themed games such as castlevania
@@joshi_6887 what the fuuuuaaaaaaascccckkkkkk arggghhhhhh
If you guys have not covered Strider for the Genesis, then I think you should. Great game!
this game is a masterpiece.. one of my favorite castlevania games. while i like super castlevania 4, this game i bought and played ridiculously but i love both games for eachs unique elements
Another game you should try out is "Chakan - The Forever Man" for the Genesis. It has dark atmosphere similar to the Castlevania titles.
MIKE! THE GG ALLIN reference! NICE!
That's the old school Ocean Loader music over the advert fr the Bluray at the end. They're awesome.
Comix Zone next Monday please!!!!!!!!
+VideoGameLover58 haha yeah they would suck so hard in this game so they would bitch about stupid stuff like in this episode.
like Mike said that the hit detection is off lol
nothing is wrong with it, Mike just sucks in this game or the controller is overused lol.
Missed some wall busts. This one actually gives you clues, with cracks in the wall.
I know this was a few years ago. Lol! I really wish I had watched these new.
3:40 Not something they would have done often? They've clearly never played another quality Konami game made at the same time called Rocket Knight Adventures =/ It'd be fun to see them make a video of that game now that I mention it, heh.
It hurts that Sinking Old Sanctuary isn't playing during the correct level, Castlevania games have amazing soundtracks and so does this game too.
Please make "Taste the Sweat" an ongoing catch phrase on these shows for whenever a game gets intense.
Let me guess - you bashed the game only because it's not available at Nintendo console? Genesis had no chance compared to SNES in terms of graphics (62 colors at screen with Genesis compared to 256 with SNES) but had no lag issues like SNES because of faster CPU. Also Sega Genesis was two years older than SNES.
Did you watch the video?
A bat just got in my house the other day. They fly just like they do in video games. haha
Love this guys but they are such Nintendo fanboys. Castlevania 4 was ok.
My cat used to go all the way up to the peak of the roof when I had my window open, and just sit there.
The bird from Ghosts 'n Goblins? Don't you mean Ninja Gaiden?
Thanks!
