This is really a great looking figure. The black looks great with so many different tones. I learned a lot from this.
Right! I'm cracking out some old Firstborn marines and testing out a few schemes. This is probably the closest I've found to what I'm thinking though - Prime black, base black (depending on how close the primer is to the bottled black...) zenithal highlight of Black Grey, tighter highlight of a lighter grey, then knock it back with a black wash/glaze and hit the edge highlights. Definitely snaffling that metal mix though, lovely and aged.
Amazing the trick of the cross!!! Great painting miniature as allways
Thank you very much!
has to be one of the best dark color schemes I have seen.
this pretty much confirmed me doing my indomitus SM as black templar, thanks :D
This is the tutorial i needed... just a year after release 🤣. Thanks for a great video
Beautiful paint job. I always like trying new black recipes.
Thank you very much :D
Thanks for this awesome video. I am a fan of the conversion. The paint work is really cool.
Awesome tutorial Pete! Just what I needed to paint my Raven Guard Phobos Librarian!
Glad I could help!
This color scheme works great for the Armor of Faith in particular, because the desaturated and more brown-ish tones give a very aged look, very appropriate for this armor.
That "golden" colour is wonderful.
This is insanely good
Great stuff man, would love to see a whole army pic sometime!
Very informative, will try it on some minis.
This "pastel yellow" seems like one-way solution for almost everything ;), want to make a salad? Add some pastel yellow! Feeling ill? Add some pastel yellow to mixture and healing salve! No fense tho, just kidding ;D
literally no one:
me: So you're going want to grab yourself some Pastel Yellow
Using a consistent colour to create highlights (pastel yellow) and shadows (black grey) can create the illusion of consistent lighting across the whole model, worked super well here!
Was great watching you paint this. I'm attempting to break the decades of GW training when it comes to painting power armour, and start to paint it more volumetrically (like I would with cloth or Orks or something) So doing my research.
When it comes to black templars, most stuff you see is edge highlighted to death, and TBH the 'Eavy Metal way while it looks pretty, doesn't make sense as the light is hitting absolutely every edge of every part of the mini. I much prefer more sparse edge highlights that actually make sense.
I'm just waiting to get my Artis Opus S and D sets next week before I really get stuck into it, as I want to try and stipple on the volumetric highlights (although watching you do this has given me even more techniques I can try out for this style of painting) I think I am going to stick with the blue/grey colours though as I'm going to try an arctic style base, and the colder tones will mesh with the base more I think. However if I decide to go with the arid red style (mars I guess) I might go for the warmer tones instead.
For me I'd really like to be able to combine Volumetric highlights with edge highlighting, but the edge highlights will actually be weathering of a sort. Will be using some metallic colours to go down to to the bare metal in places. I have always really liked Space marine armour when it's weathered well. I think I have always loved Space Marines because painting armour interests me and the different effects that you can achieve.
I know a lot of people say they're boring, but they're only boring if you paint them that way. If you actually delve into various techniques and don't just follow the box art then they're one of the most fun factions to paint in 40k IMO.
So you work at Element, do you? Or do you just frequent the Physical store? Love the shop, I buy the majority of my supplied from there (online though as I live on the North East Coast)
PS: Do you have any videos on painting the loin cloth's on BT's as well, please? I have never done light colours capes and such before (mainly just red TBH) I think I should be able to use the same technique for painting light coloured cloth, too. Never hurts to have more techniques though.
Great video thank you I was thinking of starting a new army because I really disliked the my finished models using edge highlights only I am going to do a couple of test models using this method thanks again
those cross came out great
Thank you!
"So, its becoming a bit of a catchphrase at this point, but when we're getting rid of any remaining evidence of our murder alongside the leftover body parts, we'll wanna just grab some pastel yellow and mix it-"
Similar recipe to mine, but I use bone white instead of pastel yellow. Great vid!
The metallic color looks really great. Does anyone knows something close that doesn't require mixing ?
Runelord Brass might not be too far off a similar colour
Pete The Wargamer Will check it out, thank you :)
I'm priming black then doing a sort of zenithal with a dry brush (using dampening pad) with the corvus black I think. that way I have the best of both worlds. I plan on doing volumetric highlights with my blue/greys though, so this might not even be needed. just going to have to experiment. Might even be worth just basing it in the corvus black so I can shade it.
me as a new player, sees airbrush: *dies*
Same
I'm running Space Wolves, but I'll use this for my wolf priests 😊
Perfect! It's good for Chaplains of all chapters
Hey Pete! Love your conversions and paintjobs. I've been trying to make my own chapter recently but just came across the Emperor's spears chapter and kinda love them, would love to see how you would paint the metallic blue and how you would convert them!
Sounds great! They are quite an interesting looking chapter that I've been meaning to pay a little more attention to.
@@PeteTheWargamer I'm gonna start them myself! haha. I just thought you would do a great conversion and I wanted to see the dark metalic blue armour. Because everyone else does sky blue but I don't really like that, I'm sure you can easily find the art where it looks dark metalic blue! I'm either gonna do a clear blue/contrast over metal or use ak interactive or scale 75 cobalt blue
Paint it paint it paint it PAINT IT BLAAACK YEAAAH
I see a Marine and I want to paint it black
Very well done!
Glad you liked it!
Looks great 😊
Thank you! 😊
That "gold" is fantastic!
Thank you!
Excellent video :) thank you for sharing it, I loved it!
Glad you enjoyed it!
i don't know why but i see this is what Guts would be if he became a Space Marine with that pose.
😂
Gorgeous
Thanks!
Great video, if only I was as adept at mixing paints :( I have found that a good method for "off-black" is to use GW Eshin grey, with a couple shades of nuln oil. It still looks dark but not pure black.
It also has a nice warmth to it, and you can highlight further with stormvermin fur.
Eshin grey is nice. all the skaven greys have some brown in them, so are quite warm.
That on the shoulder shield is not a Maltese Cross. It's in between a Maltese and an iron cross
In the Future I want to try out painting black with different blacks.
Like an acryllic Black, with a zenithal (maybe tone it down with Contrast/Inks) and then for the darkest places an Oilwash
Would the oil wash really be darker though?
Ooh. I can use this to paint Ravenwing, the obviously superior knights.
That's the good thing about black, it's useful for applying to loads of different schemes.
Lack of being the Emperor's chosen cope
@@JGrimm52 Lack of being logistic cope.
I do like the base too! What did you use?
spot on
Thanks!
Can you show how you’d convert and paint the scythes of the emperor chapter
If Corvus Black is a good substitute for Vallejo's Black-Grey would Rhinox Hide be a good substitute for Chocolate Brown if you're just using Citadel stuff?
How would you paint the rest of the army this guy goes with? For the standard black templars, would you edge highlight like your previous Black Templar video- with dark reaper, Thunderhawk and fenrisian grey- or would grey highlights look better over all?
Love it!
Thanks!!
did that helmet come in the indomitus box with the justicar you turned inot the emperors champion?
Brilliant pete
Thanks!
What's the Citadel Equivalent of Choclate Brown?
What kind of spray gun do you recommend?
Heck yeah
Good stuff! When we get the muddy base tutorial?
Soon hopefully, it's all filmed, just needs to edited and voiced.
@@PeteTheWargamer Good to hear, really excited for that one!
I'm pretty new to painting and know little theory behind it. Why use Pastel Yellow to lighten instead of a white?
Today we will paint something by pastel yellow
Oh so you're looking for some paint because you're painting your army of BLACK Templars who wear BLACK armour and carry BLACK swords?
_Here's some Pastel Yellow_
@@PeteTheWargamer will be ,, how to paint imperial fist" tutorial by pastel black?
Hello, mind if I borrow this color scheme? Thanks.
Nice I never thought to add a yellow instead of white to slightly brighten colors. Gonna use it to paint so salamanders up
It's great when you don't want to loose vibrancy of colour and allows you to use fewer paints overall, even if it does require a little extra work at the mixing stage.
Amazing work and inspiring, thank you. Just a quick question what color did you use for the sword grip?
Sorry I listened again and caught the color as I was making the paints list, again thank you.
Haha, no problem!
Really good guide, hoping to use some of these techniques on my Commissars!
As a thought, have you thought about kitbashing Wyrdvane Psykers or Astropaths before?
Can anyone tell me, what kind of metal is the armor of all the marines across all chapters??? Lore wise, what is supposed to be???? aluminum metal? steel? ceramic aluminum ??
how do you think they did that marble effect on the chaplain shoulder pad? it looks ace!
I've not actually noticed that before, I'll have to check it out
Was there a black wash over the armor as well? Not sure if I missed that step. But this looks amazing!
Nope, no black wash. You can neaten up the shadows with some black though, much like I did with the sword at the end.
Does anyone know a GW colour to match AKs ‘Off White’?
Nice
Thanks
will German grey from Vallejo work instead of black grey? nice work btw (Y) thx
It's slightly lighter but it is close enough so yeh!
awww yeah dis gonna be gud ..
Pete do you even Rondol??
Are you asking me if I RonDO or RonDONT?
This video made you atleast one more Patreon. Me!
Pete u risk a yt ban for the black in the title. Is already happened so :/ (its happened for this charapter, black Templar).
Your paint became SOOOO professionnal compared to the beginning of your videos.
And I am not still subscribed to your channel... I'm ashamed.
This isn't black. You have painted grey templars.
meh...
