If you have a mechanical aptitude, it applies towards anything mechanical. Andrew obviously has tons of it. So much in fact that he is able to move from thing to thing without even thinking about it much. He also has tons of experience and the ability to work it out which is in my opinion the very definition of intelligence.
Thanks for taking us along with you! Lovely place - I could really get into old historical places like that Inn. Looked like a relaxing & quiet place to slow down and recharge for the weekend. Glad you two had a great time.
For the next repair, use fiberglass mat for your first layer. Then alternate fabric/mat. Last layer should be mat because it's sandable. Fabric isn't sandable (you're cutting the threads and end up with a series of fiberglass "U" which have no strenght). You can add bondo or gelcoat before sanding to fill up the pinholes and low points. If you want to use fabric only, you need to use epoxy. And a filler of sort at the end to have something to sand. Fabric alone will delaminate with polyester resin. Also, use PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) at the end to seal your resin or gelcoat from air so they cure fully. PVA forms a temporary plastic film you can wash off with water the next day. Otherwise the ouside layer of the resin will stay tacky and clogg your sandpaper. Cheers !
