    I used an orbital sander without any paper on it. Pour your castable, then press the sander to the side and flip the switch. The vibration will work air bubbles out of the mix.

    Dude, the best thing about your videos is how you just cut right to the chase on what's important to know. SO refreshing in this world of YouBoob blabbing BS jockeys where you think you're going to watch something useful then waste three quarters of the time listening to someone run their chops about nothing. And for the record -- the cat is not the same thing -- everyone knows cats are smart -- and that one clearly digs your energy. Cat's appreciate no-nonsense guys too. ;-) So, now you've got crucible capabilities, you must make a mighty blade mold and get some close-up footage pouring the molten goodness into it in a dimly lit setting -- preferably with tune from the Wizard of Oz that the Wicked Witch's soldiers sang going in the background. A fearsome Viking helm might also go well in that sequence... Love the channel -- keep it up!

    To my knowledge you cant melt steel with a propane burner, but you sure can oxidise it into a pile of good for nothing crap by adding a powerful fan, same as a coal forge does but if you make a chamber you can melt steel with coal or wood they can get hotter than propane.
    Try adding some Itc 100 or compatible IR reflector to your forge insides for some extra heat reflecting to increase your temps, but you still need to turn that fan down.

  • @jerichojoe307
    @jerichojoe307 Год назад

    Holy volume gradient. At some points I had to turn it up to hear your voice clearly, but then you started up the angle grinder and I nearly went deaf. Like the content so I'm still giving you a like And subscribe, but you need an editor to work out your volume gradients and dropping the gain on power tool noise, and a lapel mic would help with consistent vocal volumes.

    • @OldHickoryForge

      Evans Leblanc you could make the furnace the same using Venturi burners but I don’t know how well it would perform

    Hey, what do you think about using multiple ribbon burners (2-3) in an old turkey smoker about 2- 3 feet long for a forge capable of doing longer blades like swords?
    I was initially going to use 3-4 venturi burners, but the ribbon burners seem like a considerably better option.
    Do you think you would need separate fuel systems for each burner or could they be ran off common header?
    Really love your videos!

  • @danielcrawford7315
    @danielcrawford7315 5 лет назад +1

    That is bad a@@ed there! 1st I've seen a ribbon used in a foundry.
    Now I've seen foundry that easily melts cast iron , but it runs on forced air ( vacuum cleaner on a simulated vfd.) Propane and waiste oil injection. In theory that would work with the ribbon burner part, in theory. You know the oil is atomized by blown air/propane...well it works in a venturi burner like a fire breathing dragon and will melt cast iron in minutes. ( Note there are specific crucibals for iron/steel )
    I question if the internal baffle plate would deflect the atomized oil enough to precipitate it again. Air/oil/propane can get up right at or tad over 3000 in a venturi style burner , with a ribbon it may be a tad more...if the waiste oil stayed atomized.
    Also have you considered adding ITC 100HT? it heats faster and refracts more.
    Got all my stuff in now to build forge n foundry...just waiting for warmer temps. Old n cold are good for drinks...not so much for me lol lol

    Excellent work man! What PSI were you running at there at the end?

    • @OldHickoryForge
      @OldHickoryForge  5 лет назад +2

      Paul Gibson about 15. Cranking it up higher the gas outpaced the air a good bit. A bigger blower would speed up the process.

      Ben Levitt spreads the heat out more and the fuel and air have more time to mix which gets you more complete fuel consumption. Basically you get more heat with less fuel

    • @OldHickoryForge

      brantley tinnin no. You have to have enough volume of air flow for the air and gas to mix and combust. Also you need a constant air supply. Air compressor won’t work
