interesting stuff indeed. good explanation of how additives in lower viscosity later generation oils protect the engine

Great episode easy to follow. What I understood is that diesel engines are getting even more complicated due to the fuel economy that is only benefiting truck and car manufacturers. We, as a consumer are only getting more expensive low viscosity oils to buy.
We can use our old stuff but, of course, we will void our warrantee.
What you forgot to ask is yes, more fleet people are using oil testing labs to extend their oil change and cut down maintenance cost but at what mileage and time interval?
What's the oil change interval on these trucks and how are they getting extended?
Do fleet owners in case of a good oil leave it alone for the next check, or they partially change it, or they add some kind of additive package to the engine?
This is a Mobile guy... so engine flushing, oil additives, regular RUclips myths could have been asked too.

I refer to approx. 28:00 min. in when Paul mentioned cold startup oil distribution and different viscosities on the W side of the viscosity range. My point is why don't manufacturers install an electric driven pre oiler on their engines? Most wear is on startup so it would make sense to flood the bearings with oil before that. I realise it would be difficult to pre oil rings but you could mitigate wear in the bottom end bearings, cam lobes and camshaft bearings.

Great topic. Would definitely like to hear more about real time oil sensors and correlations to lab results

Glad you touched on oil analysis reluctance and the limits of sensors, but too bad you didn't discuss 1 micron bypass filtration with additive replenishment to extend oil change intervals 5-10x. Maybe next time!

Rafe: Paul mentioned that customers selecting a 30 weight Mobil Diesel Oil, rather than a 40 weight Diesel Oil, can expect a .5% to 1% increase in fuel economy? That doesn’t sound too significant! Amsoil (the inventor of Synthetic Diesel Oil) has been producing a 100% Synthetic 5W-30 Diesel Oil for over 27 years and they hired an Independent Research Institute to conduct a scientific test establishing that the Amsoil 5W-30 achieved a 8.2% miles per gallon (MPG) increase over Shell Rotella T 15W-40, where they remarked the test was conducted under ideal weather conditions (where they would expect an even a greater MPG increase under more adverse weather conditions). The scientific test specifically involved three test tractor-trailer trucks and one control tractor-trailer truck (with each truck carrying the same load of weight with concrete blocks to achieve a gross vehicle weight of 75,550 pounds). The control truck used freshly-changed Shell Rotella T 15W-40 exclusively in all driving segments of the test, while the test trucks used freshly-changed Shell Rotella T 15W-40 only in the baseline segment. The three test trucks used Amsoil 100% Synthetic 5W-30 Diesel Oil for their final test segment.
That scientific test in the preceding paragraph was conducted in 1997 and is superseded by Amsoil 100% Synthetic Signature Series 5W-30 Diesel Oil (API CK-4) that is backwards-compatible to older oil requirements, such as CJ-4, CI-4+ and CF. The upgraded Amsoil 5W-30 has 6 times better Wear Protection (based upon third-party testing in the Detroit Diesel DD13 Scuffing Test).
The Amsoil 5W-30 dissipates heat better than a 15W-40. This is due to a 5W-30 flowing through the entire engine better, whereby it spends less time in the hottest section of the engine (in the crankshaft and bearings). Also, if the truck possesses a turbo that can become extremely hot, you would want a lesser viscosity of oil traveling through the turbo faster, since a slower-moving oil will develop even more heat from the turbo.
Typical Diesel Oils have a lower thermal-breakdown threshold than Gasoline Motor Oils. You have to be concerned whether the heat from your diesel engine will exceed the threshold of your chosen diesel oil. In general, Amsoil has higher thresholds in their motor oils (diesel and gasoline) .than the competition due to their Class IV Synthetic (PAO) and their Class V Synthetic (such as an Ester or equivalent), hence their 100% Synthetic formula (in other words, not a drop of hydrocracked petroleum).
Yes, you probably guessed I am an Independent Amsoil Dealer with my ID number 1420935 (also used as my Referral Code). All dealers of Amsoil are Independent Contractors, as opposed to actual employees of Amsoil).
If consumers wish to buy the Amsoil products as a Preferred Customer (PC), they will get the oil at a 25% discount, plus free shipping when they spend $100 (plus receiving a $5 coupon for every $100 you spend). It only costs $10 for a 6 month PC membership (or $20 a year) and there is no requirement to purchase (as there is with so many companies offering a membership for a preferred customer program, where there is an automatic shipment involved). Any company possessing a fleet of trucks, would potentially qualify as a Commercial Account and would receive a 30% discount without any membership fee.
If any viewers are tempted to try Amsoil, I invite you to visit the official website of Amsoil and apply to become my Preferred Customer, by kindly utilizing my name (James Norris) in the box underneath the question that asks “Did someone refer you to Amsoil? If so, please tell us.” Then in the next box they ask “Have a Referral Number? Enter it below:” I kindly ask that you include my Referral Number of 1420935 in that box. If you can write down my name and referral number, before you eventually decide to exit this webpage, it will be appreciated (so that it will be at your fingertips when you get on the official Amsoil website).
You can also write me an email addressed to AutomotiveBuff at my gmail address (in case you have any questions). I encourage COMPANIES WITH A FLEET OF TRUCKS to email me, where I need to complete a Commercial Application and submit it directly to Amsoil, Inc.
