People need to stop thinking of rapiers as a sword and think of them like a giant ice pic that you’re poking somebody with you can’t really slash with them.
Before gunpowder, the greatest weapon is the horsebow and pony. First came the Huns and then Mongols conquered half the known world, including China, Russia, and Eastern Europe. No problem against mounted and armored knights. That said, rapier is likely the best blade ever designed for a formal unarmored duel. In a battlefield, I'd like something that had been tried and tested for a thousand years, (well, a spear, but we're talking swords) a shield and a short stabbing sword like a gladius.
George Silver thought a cut-&-thrust basket-hilt sword with rather long (37-40in) blade could defeat the rapier. Despite all his bravado, he was much more restrained when it came to given detailed advice for facing rapier & dagger with sword & dagger. He also thought there was no question that a two-handed sword with the same length of blade beats rapier or rapier & dagger. While folks frequently dismiss Silver as a crank, his serious claims are more plausible than they might seem at first glance. For instance, the accomplished HEMA rapier fencer Robert Childs recommends a blade length almost exactly the same as Silver's (half one's height plus three inches). Additionally, he recently did surprisingly well with a longsword against another skilled fencer using rapier-&-dagger. Regardless of Silver & strictly looking at historical rapier sources & modern sparring, it's not at all clear the long rapier beats a rapier of moderate length.
Apples and oranges. The zweihander is a big, heavy battlefield sword. The rapier was a sword people would carry as part of their daily dress when not expecting a fight. Obviously there's some overlap and rapiers were seen on military campaigns, but the intended role of each sword is very different. The rapier, though so long it would be replaced by smaller swords, could be treated like a sidearm and carried about town. You can't say that of the zweihander, it's much more of an inconvenience to carry it. So a light rapier a well-dressed gentleman carries to market for self-defense can be outclassed by a warrior's heavy-duty weapon from the battlefield. But of course. You might as well say the rapier can be outmatched by a spear, halberd, or bow. The rapier is designed to be light and relatively easy to carry. The zweihander is a demanding, high-performance weapon. It's also two-handed sword vs. a one-handed sword. It can be longer and heavier, with corresponding advantages and disadvantages. The zweihander definitely outclasses the rapier in many situations, but there are good reasons the rapier was more popular and people chose to carry it instead. It was very useful. Performance in a swordfight isn't the only consideration when choosing a sword.
@@Specter_1125 In that case the assailant would have to face the bodyguard with the greatsword and the nobleman with the rapier at the same time. Not the best situation if you're a knife wielding thug.
A long rapier with a 45in blade (or more) is quite difficult to comfortably wear. That's basically the upper limit for a sidearm worn at the waist. Girard Thibault criticized the extreme blade length recommended by other rapier masters. It's not at all clear the very long rapiers have the advantage over ones of more moderate length. Robert Childs recommends a rather short rapier.
That snow as got me thinking about half swording with bare hands in freezing temps and the payoff of using it against your opponent vs frostbite to your palms.
If you're going for such length, might as well just go to a spear. How about carrying a spear and a normal (about 30 inch blade) length sword? That was in fact a common carry for ancient warriors.
You're comparing a civilian defense weapon to a specialized military weapon. "Yeah, the Glock 40 is durable, reliable, accurate, and has great stopping power. But if you want a gun that can beat it, try an M249 SAW."
I was watching a katana Master go against a guy with a rapier and he was struggling. He said outside of the range, the rapier had a big advantage, it was the speed that was also hard to deal with. Because when you're using the rapier, you can trust really easy without like showing your moves. (Because they're smaller movements). But the rapier had problems deflecting blows, if you can get them in.
Yes, paired weapons - especially sword and shield of course, can defeat single rapier quite reliably. But single sword vs single sword? Rapier normally dominates. And remember that the rapier can be paired with a dagger, buckler, shield, cloak, or even another rapier!
In a mutual combat prearranged duel where opponents approach from distance yes, rapier or great sword are king. But in a self defense situation I can see an attacker easily getting past your long blade and closing. Especially if it’s sheathed at your side it’ll be slow to draw. Just my thoughts. A mid size cut and thrust with a shorter blade would be more versatile also easier to carry.
The main challenge of dealing with a foe wielding a rapier is that the deadly bit of his weapon is like five feet out in front of him. You have to cover a _lot_ of ground to do anything about him.
Already. I've been a subscriber for years now and his channel is always on point.. In this case, literally He's on the cutting edge of HEMA and historic reality, and he will tell you if he doesn't know something as well as provide you with where you can learn more about whatever he found on the topic. Matt is a competent martial artist in his field of study and thoroughly explains the weapon or historic time reference which it was used. There are comparisons between different weapons and fight styles. Highly informatory I recommend Matt and also shadiversity as two channels for both fun and information But realize the amount of research has been put into these two channels to bring you accurate content. Also Scallagrim, and Metatron also here on RUclips. With all these excellent channels, you're bound to learn something you might not have known otherwise.
If you have a shorter, stronger blade, such as a katana, one way to beat someone with a rapier is to not strike the swordsman but to strike and attack the blade with the potential to destroy the blade or get into range. The other one is that you must realise that the raiper doesn't make huge cuts; it's for thrusting, so you cannot make huge upward or big slicing cuts with your katana; you will get ran through. You need to use slight cuts and slight movements, and this will give you a much better chance.
When I started watching HEMA fights on RUclips it suddenly sunk in that swords are basically long pointy things for poking people, not big chopping swinging things like in movies.

My rapier-wielding opponent when I just grab their La Pokea Poke, and pull them closer into a deep kiss.
So what I'm hearing is: "The answer to a big/long sword? A bigger/longer sword."
Some things never change.
A sword the size of the universe is clearly the solution here
I was watching a katana Master go against a guy with a rapier and he was struggling.
He said outside of the range, the rapier had a big advantage, it was the speed that was also hard to deal with.
Because when you're using the rapier, you can trust really easy without like showing your moves. (Because they're smaller movements).
But the rapier had problems deflecting blows, if you can get them in.
Ahhh, Matt in the snow playing with swords. How lucky are we?
How about two short swords? You can bind the blade with one and get in range for the other... I've done it in sparring against a big two handed sword.
Yes, paired weapons - especially sword and shield of course, can defeat single rapier quite reliably. But single sword vs single sword? Rapier normally dominates. And remember that the rapier can be paired with a dagger, buckler, shield, cloak, or even another rapier!
How to beat rapier? Rapier + parrying dagger in the offhand.
You've made my day with that one mate.
Spear and polearm laughs loudly
Guns came just to end "the best sword" debate.
Remember the rapier can still trust through small gaps in a armor
In a mutual combat prearranged duel where opponents approach from distance yes, rapier or great sword are king. But in a self defense situation I can see an attacker easily getting past your long blade and closing. Especially if it’s sheathed at your side it’ll be slow to draw. Just my thoughts. A mid size cut and thrust with a shorter blade would be more versatile also easier to carry.
Thank you and love this snow
The main challenge of dealing with a foe wielding a rapier is that the deadly bit of his weapon is like five feet out in front of him. You have to cover a _lot_ of ground to do anything about him.
Already.
I've been a subscriber for years now and his channel is always on point..
In this case, literally
He's on the cutting edge of HEMA and historic reality, and he will tell you if he doesn't know something as well as provide you with where you can learn more about whatever he found on the topic.
Matt is a competent martial artist in his field of study and thoroughly explains the weapon or historic time reference which it was used.
There are comparisons between different weapons and fight styles.
Highly informatory
I recommend Matt and also shadiversity as two channels for both fun and information
But realize the amount of research has been put into these two channels to bring you accurate content.
Also
Scallagrim, and Metatron also here on RUclips.
Was sure the other sword would be a spear!
Against a rapier? Crossbow please...lol
How to counter a rapier:
Long range ballistic missile
I'm not sure if it was this channel, but I heard that the two hander was used to hold choke points as it was so hard to close the distance to one
Even when its snowing Matt remains super dry!
The rapier is for the Sunday drive. The other one is a Saturday night accessory.
When I started watching HEMA fights on RUclips it suddenly sunk in that swords are basically long pointy things for poking people, not big chopping swinging things like in movies.
Depends on the sword. Most of the dedicated chopping swords were from a much earlier era than the manuscripts the HEMA crowd uses
The only problem is that the spadone/zweihander cannot be comfortably worn at the side.
Great for guarding doorways and certain areas as a static position.
Good form Easton! Good Form!
