I wasn't able to locate this rule in the rule book, so I went to BGG and actually found a thread on this very subject. You are correct, I should not have gone after those bombers. I will remove the VP and keep playing on the next mission. All is not lost, I still only need to down one more bomber to at least not lose the season. Thanks for pointing this out.

I believe that bombers which are damaged by flak and has fallen out of formation before the mission are not put on the turn track.
