      If allowed to make the analogy, when I was younger I had the opportunity to come across some books written by Mr. Jim Corbett. It was about his experiences as a hunter of man-eating big cats in India and for some strange reason Aaron story narrating reminds me a lot of those books, maybe same personality? Who knows.

    @keywestwaterman your fuel theory is 100% correct. In aviation, we have vents on our gas tanks in the wings and we typically fill the tanks all the way up the night before. So the gas will cool down and then when the sun comes up the following day on summer days, it is not uncommon to walk outside and just watch gas pouring out of your wing onto the ground.

    • @KeyWestWaterman
      @KeyWestWaterman  Год назад

      wild! I've seen the vents do the same on the boat

    • @bradleysnyder6540
      @bradleysnyder6540 11 месяцев назад

      I too am a pilot and we plan for this. But if you fill you tanks with cool fuel in the morning and your tanks warm up, like you mentioned, they will vent the excess fuel overboard, you can never get that fuel back and you paid for that wasted fuel, and it’s not good for the water. If your tanks below the waterline on your white boat do not heat up enough that it causes your boat to vent… keep doing what you are doing!

    I've been to Key West ( Waterman ) l o l , 3 times in my life ! I always wanted to go to the Dry Tortuga's, but never made it there ! That last Hurricane destroyed my sister's condo off of Fort Meyer's ! I caught many a Jack Crevalle's, but never a yellow one ? I would have liked to tasted one before I returned to Illinois ! I like the Gulf waters more than the Atlantic side ! Incredible colors in the waters ! I would have liked to see a CLEAN & COOK on that A.P. ! As a marine Technician, you were correct on the fuel heating up creating a possible Vapor Lock situation ! I was surprised that you used black totes down in Florida where temps exceed 90 degree's !

    Great video Aaron! I’m not a petroleum engineer, but as an accountant, I’ve done audits on gas stations and when we counted the gas, we always measured quantity and temperature. That temperature was used to convert the litres to 15 C (roughly 60 F), which is the norm in the gas industry. Supposedly, the gas pump would convert the gas going through it to 15 C when we pump it. In essence, we should always get the same amount per litre/gallon at any point of the day. Obviously, gas pumps go through regular testing here in Canada on predetermined dates, so I’m sure no big oil people would ever tamper with that.
    Loved the video. Thanks for sharing!!!

    Very good Aaron on the coolers , they do exactly what you said. On the fuel note I did read a few years ago that it is smarter to fuel up in the mornings being that it's cooler. But another note should be that when people in general put the nozzle in the gas tank they usually press the handle for the fuel to come out quicker. That is what burns the fuel down. If you press it si the fuel comes out at a slower pace it also lets you get more fuel for your buck. It's like the harder you step on the gas, the faster that gas gets consumed. Great video brother. I'm gonna check out today's after I'm done with this bad boy.

    So there are actually some good reports supporting your theory on fueling times.
    Also, never run the pump handle wide open.
    They say that in the heat of the the faster you run the pump, the more it releases the vapor trapped in the tanks.
    So you are definitely on the right track.

    Awesome video !! I've always wanted to camp out on Tortuga ! Not so much if there's a lot of light . Touching on fueling up . I've always done the same after working with a fuel company . Especially if the holding tanks are metal . Once they heat up there will be a tremendous amount of condensation. Now mutiple that condensation per day . Water sinks to the bottom hence the reason your pump being at one end of the tank and slightly unlevel . The suction tube for the pump should be anywhere from 1.5 to 4/5 inches off the bottom depending on size of tank . After working for a fuel company I won't fuel up anything after a bulk fuel drop delivery due to sludge being stirred up . Yes there's mutiple micron filters to help but so does waiting . Early morning top offs would be best imo due to water condensation buildup throughout the heat of the day . I've pulled shop vacs full of sludge because of this . Talk to your distributor if you're picky about how often they clean their tanks. It's definitely needed preventive maintenance ! Thanks for the video Dibs !!! Can't wait to see the rest of the trip .

    With the fuel it doesn't matter what time of day you get fuel. All fuel pumps have to be calibrated according to what type of fuel pump your using. Calibration for 5 gallons for the average pump 100 gallons for your high flow pumps.

    I loved the Dry Tortugas when I was there a little over 30 years ago. My highschool in Sarasota took us to Ft Myers and we took a boat out there for 4 nights I think. We fished one day and fished and dove from the boat another day. It really was awesome. I caught the biggest fish AND the most of out 25 kids but only wanted the prize for my big mutton snapper. Nobody was surprised, I fished a lot back then. And I just moved to VA Beach so I can do it again. The NC foothills sucked for a Florida man.

    As an engineer I can say yes you'll get more fuel into a given space of it's cooler. Racing teams use this concept to pack more fuel before the start of a race {see motogp}. However you'd need to know if the pumps compensate for such a thing, meaning how they measure the volume of fluid getting delivered. So, you'll get more fuel into your fuel tank when it's cooler but I imagine you still pay the same total cost per gallon. Because, loss prevention...

      @KeyWestWaterman  Год назад +1

      Makes sense! Appreciate the info

    • @alanmartinez45
      @alanmartinez45 Год назад

      The way most pumps compensate for this is double walled underground tanks that barely change in temperature so it doesn't matter, in cases where you may be pumping thousands of gallons like in airplanes or really big boats it does, and the measurements are made by weight and not volume so there is no compensation to do exactly to avoid this, at your normal leisure boat pump the machine measures by volume, so if the gas is heavier you get more, but even then the pump doesn't loose because it compensates with the people who won't or can't fill up in the am(time is limited)...

    fyi, a gallon is a gallon. summer gasoline has a lower reid vapor pressure (rvp) which means it doesn't evaporate easily at higher temperatures like you have in the keys in summer. It is however more expensive to make than winter gasoline which has a higher rvp and will evaporate more quickly when things are very warm. Its a smog thing mandated by the Clean Air Act and EPA.

    I’ve always precooled my coolers and everyone called me crazy. The gasoline does contract and expand. I deliver gasoline, when I load the gasoline at the terminal it comes out of the million gallon tank and it loads at 70 degrees. If it’s 90 degrees outside and I drive one hour or more to the store the computers in the store usually show I bring 200 gallons more than it shows I loaded. The winter if it’s really cold and the fuel is loaded with a 40 degree difference it shows I unloaded 200 gallons less. But, the above ground tanks at marinas are double walled so they are decently insulated. You might gain 5 gallons by getting 200 gallons of fuel in the morning. I like the cheap 2 gallon pump bug sprayers for fresh water cleaning. You can pack less fresh water and clean more with the sprayer.

    I believe You're right about the gas! Can You still get blocks of ice there? We used to get them in key largo at Rowels marina back in the early 90's and it lasts a long time. Sad that place is gone now.

    Gasoline expands at 0.069% for every degree Fahrenheit. So 70 degrees in the morning and 95 in the peak afternoon is about 1.7% difference.

    Clams rocking that Wu-Tang merch! 😂❤ Fish love Wu-tang. That’s why we named my brothers boat the “Wahoo-tang”

    Awesome video! My fiance and I have been there via the seaplane before but taking our own boat and fishing/camping on the island is definitely a bucket list trip for us!

    Great video! My brother in law told me to look up your channel and I had to subscribe on the first one I watched. I live on the east coast in Brevard county and spend a lot of time taking my boat out in the Sebastian Inlet and Indian River Lagoon. I would love to trailer it down to the Keys one of these days but I have no idea how to navigate the area, whats legal and not etc. I'll have to watch more of your content and do some more research. The keys and surrounding areas are on my list for some exploring one day. Thanks for putting it out there for us.

    Lots of rats down there. In the mornings they would run off with anything that they could. Whisks, spoons, coffee cups, spice shakers, etc. Thought I was losing my mind at first.
