Yeah, putting on a public face at cons is important. When i know I'm gonna be interacting with normies in suit (like at the AC block party), i usually wear sports jerseys to break the ice. People are chill about the furry thing when you're chill about it

One of the best interactions I had with a normie at the block party last year was because I commented on the sports jersey they were wearing. People are a lot more open to interacting with this community if we are approachable!

One thing to note about cons and the city they are held in: Vandalism through Stickers. Last year Anthrocon was fined quite a lot (over $10K) because a light pole near the con was COVERED in furry stickers. To help prevent that they are going to be putting up a sticker wall so folks can put their stickers up without having to damage public property and being fined for it.
So, yeah, think twice before putting a sticker on a building please!

The issue of representing your community is particularly important for a fandom like this because it's a very distinct one.
When I go to my conventions, unless someone is in the meeting rooms with us, they can't tell if we're mechanical engineers, guidance counselors, business owners, or anything else because we are in normal clothes and look like everyone else. If we act like a fool, only a few people will be able to associate the trouble we cause with our specific group.
But if you folks are out there in these very distinct suits, it's very easy for any witness to associate any bad behavior they see with people who wear these distinctive suits.

In regards to fursuit, is bets to keep in mind:
They are doing that to have fun for themselves.
So the fun of other is a secondary aspect.
Of course, given that is full of people of all types, there need to be some tolerance towards how someone have fun.
But also consideration for not doing something that may make others too uncomfortable.
That is, be weird, let the others be weird, as long is harmless.
And if you feel uncomfortable, move away, if they follow, let them know (politely) why they are bothering you.
If that fails, better to call con staff.

My first thought: "We can't get enough of those kinds of lectures; just yesterday, I heard a horror story from a friend about how, when she was 16, _four adult furries_ invited her to join them in their hotel room at the Great Lakes Fur Con!"
Maybe that's just one datapoint, but it makes GLFC sound like it was almost as awful as Rainfurrest, and only didn't get as much attention as RF because it was a much smaller con!

  • @maelstromeyre9062

I enjoyed the heck out of this video. I know there are some in the fandom who have the mentality that they just want to have fun and be silly with their friends, and that's awesome, but never at the expense of other attendees, con staff or volunteers or vendors, or the people working at the hotel or nearby businesses. It really DOES matter, because it CAN affect whether or not that con is welcomed back in the future. It can affect whether the con staff and volunteers decide to hold the con again in the future.
It's entirely possible to have fun while still being considerate of the people around you.

My First time going to MFF and a Furry Con was last year for me.
I was happy to be there but I agree that hearing so many bad tales and even seeing the sirens constantly wasn't great tbh.
I think the points you give are very solid and I feel like the 621 comes with a very heavy asterisk, as I ended up eating a lot more than that due to the distance I walked/ran at the Con.
I really hope we can all be better but Cons getting more actual paid staff or even more security would be nice.
I tried being more careful with fursuiters, they're basically limited in many sensory inputs.
Even semi handling a friendo in fursuit head, I was trying to help him not fall or something.
Here's to future cons and con goers being better, as a whole.
We're all there to have fun, to be ourselves, but more than anything, I think we're there to be better too.

Salesforce Dreamforce is expected to have 100K attendees this year. They basically take over San Francisco in the Market Street area. They hire their own security and partner with city police. It works. Perhaps apples and oranges but Furcons can do the same to handle the large attendance if they can afford it.

I've never been to a convention, a mix between the fact that i still live with my parents (who don't know i am a furry - have been for years but it's nothing i'll ever confess) and secondly is because of the fact that I don't have a suit. I could only ever dream of going to a convention :'3

    • @drawerganizer785

As long as you're not a minor, It shouldn't really concern your parents. Just say you're going away on a weekend trip to [name of city the convention's in] with friends. You might might also be surprised at how much they probably don't care. It's a given that everyone has their thing they're into, and we expect that from others.
And you don't need a suit to go to a convention. I don't have a suit, I've gone to several cons, and the majority of people there don't own a fursuit. It's much more fun to go to a con without a fursuit than to spend the same weekend at home. And it doesn't stop you from attending more cons at the point in time in which you do own a fursuit.

Why does MFM not allow grills in your hotel room? Because a non-con guest setup a grill and was cooking one year. Lots of smoke and other issues including, I believe, a fire department visit. Some things might not make sense in a code of conduct, but I will bet that everything is based upon someone doing it. SO before you blow off these "weird" and "ridiculous" restrictions, ask someone who has been there for some time why they exist. You might even get a good story out of it. 🙂

I entirely disagree with your point in this. People should be treated as individuals. It's ridiculous to expect that your behavior in society reflects aspects about your life like a college degree or being a furry. People can do whatever they want. It should be their image they should worry about, not the image of parts of society they associate with.
As decent people in society, we have an expectation to not be horrible people, but that's about it. I've seen this image thing go too far, and I'm sick of it. Isn't the entire premise of furry culture that we're a bunch of weird people who like weird things? Why censor what we are? It's not any individuals responsibility to protect the image of the fandom. That is solely on the shoulders of those who choose to be representatives to the public. Not to the con goer who just wants to have fun. Not even you as a public figure if you don't want to be.
I agree that people shouldn't be shitty, and the rules mentioned here should be common etiquette, but I disagree entirely on it being a personal responsibility for everyone associated to project a "socially acceptable" image. That's a ridiculous thing to expect. This video would have scared me away from the fandom, or at least going to cons, if I was just getting into it.
