    I bought capture one 23 in January of 2023. I'm a little pissed off to have spent a sizable chunk of change and just realized from your video why I've not been able to update to the latest AI tools, like masking . Am I out the $300-$400 I thought would carry me with updates, at least until version 24? If I purchase another perpetual license, will it be outdated again in another year? I'm really not happy with the direction this company has taken with pricing. You compared it to Davinci Resolve. It's definitely not the same. The biggest difference is that with resolve once you invest in the fully functional version, it's good for life! That's a huge difference! Not to mention the limited version is free with DR. Capture one's pricing scheme is more like Adobe's. One of the main reasons I chose Capture One was the licence. The latest inability to update in the same version is infuriating and makes me question my choice moving forward. Can you please explain the options and what you meant by an amazing loyalty program? Right now, I'm not feeling it. Thank you.

    • @StudioBuilder
      @StudioBuilder  7 месяцев назад

      Perpetual licenses are good only for the version you own, such as 16.2, 16.3, 16.4, etc. You get minor updates such as 16.2.1, 16.2.2 and 16.2.x but not 16.3. Capture One dropped the year numbering in its name last year and just went to Capture One Pro (at 16.3) likely because they knew they were working on splitting into Pro and Studio. All of this has been documented and announced on their website and in multiple emails. As for the comparison to Resolve, that was a comparison to the split in the two versions, not in pricing. As for the loyalty program, all the information is on their website. Just log into your account and click on "Loyalty Program."

      @@craigbarnett5992 I disagree with the statement they're another Adobe. Because 1 - Adobe ONLY has the subscription model. They're not going to sell you a major version update, then add some amazing new feature a month later and charge you another $400. 2 - Lightroom and Photoshop are still FAR better software than C1 (IMO), and also include more features since there are 2 different pieces of software that cover different purposes. This is the perspective of someone that does not work in a studio, though, which I've heard C1 is far better at (tethering). In my opinion, based on the fact ALL these companies are introducing on-going subscription licensing, Adobe is now the best value all around, because it's the cheapest per month, and still does more than all these others. FYI, ALL software in business / enterprise is subscription-based and always has been, if you actually want updates, feature additions, etc.

      @@craigbarnett5992 I think it's okay. For example, I only use Perpetual licenses. Why? Because even if I don't have a period or pay at all, I always have my copy of the software. I own it. With the subscription model, I don't own anything. This is software rental and inclusive capitalism. When I stop paying for my subscription, all my money will remain with the company, and I will have nothing left. And this is terrible when it comes to software that runs completely on a local computer and does not use the resources of the company. Therefore, I better buy Perpetual license when they make enough significant updates and it will be worth it. In such a situation, I save money on a subscription and I always remain the owner of the software. And as experience shows - these constant updates most often do not significantly affect the quality of my work. Therefore, they can be missed for six months and even a year, which does not change anything at all.

      C1's pricing structure sucks. It's bad. They've joined the dark side. I'm sure they love their pricing structure, it's real optimized for them, their profits. But the people don't like it. They'll lose respect and "loyalty" over it.

    *Thank you for your review! It was very useful.* From the video, I realized that so far there is nothing in the updates to rush to pay for the new perpetual license again and move faster to 16.4. That is, at the moment there are no significant, significant improvements that would force me to spend another $180 dollars. While I observe and remain on version 16.3.8 🙂

    I only can imagine that the real goal is to remove or stop updating tether support in the pro version to force professionals to pay a much higher price for very much the same software now called studio. C1 is loosing ground and I am not surprised, the ai crop simply does not work as advertised and ai masking is still no competition to adobe even simple objects need manual correction not to speak from the options to mix and combine masks in LR. adobe added also tether support for Sony recently and it is as fast or even faster than c1 which was an important reason to stick with c1 for many pro sony user. so for most applications LR is all you need and PS is a free benefit. the massive price increase for enterprise customer will likely also not have the desired effect as big corporations are even much more cost sensitive than creatives.

    I have used C1 for around 5 years and it gets better and better, to the point now where I rarely need to take an image to another editing program - and only then for something like a large object removal or frequency separation. The addition of the AI tools has been another big improvement in end to end workflow and as a portrait/people shooter (mainly) I was hoping C1 would enhance the subject selection with AI facial features selection too. But never mind, the AI crop tool will come in useful. My Mac Studio has shown a significant speed increase in the AI selection tools, so things move much quicker. What I cant understand, like you, is why the differentiation with the new Studio version in terms tools not specifically improving collaboration/team work. I can see the need for new tools that improve collaboration in a studio/commercial environment to be limited to the Studio version, but C1 is effectively now differentiating between Professional Photographers - those that work essentially alone and those that work in teams. They are suggesting that the former don't need as good editing tools as the latter? It's even more ridiculous when they stopped the free Express version and the brand versions so they could concentrate on developing one package! I won't be upgrading, no compelling reason for me to do so.

    I really hate what Capture One has turned into. As you said, capture one was initially created for tethering. Then they made Basic and Pro... now Pro isn't actually Pro anymore, cause they want you to pay 3x the (already very expensive) price for a few extra features that should really just be included in the Pro version.

  • @davidgrandy4681

    I don't do tethered studio product or portrait photography so C1 Studio is not something that I need. Having said that, in many ways - based on C1S tutorials, it seems be fixing a problem that doesn't exist. The sample images were when the shooter was way too loose with their composition. Then C1S fixed it into a nice tight 4x5. The other fix would be to shoot properly to begin with. When I think about where the advantages of some camera and software assets lay, it seems to be for when the shooter really messes up. If you are in a studio, you control the lighting ratios - or at least you should - so why would you need the multi stop dynamic range unless "I underexposed the shot by five stops, and look how I recovered it." Do you not check the histogram? Or "I need "XX" megapixels in case I have to crop in." How about you fix that by getting closer or by using a longer lens? Surely a professional art director can see a 2x3 proportion and interpolate that into 4x5. At least I would hope so. About the only actual use of the C1 Studio re-crop of loosely composed images I can think of would be if the art director wants to be able to crop either vertical or horizontal from the same file, and I don't think that such a great idea either.
    I liked your tutorial but I was confused when you were talking about AI Crop. I thought that you were talking about a Studio feature and my brain turned off. Then I realized that it was for C1Pro (I think). It would have been helpful if you could overlay something on the screen like "For Capture One Pro" and then "For Capture One Studio".

    • @StudioBuilder
      @StudioBuilder  7 месяцев назад

      It IS confusing. C1S has an AI Crop tool but C1P has AI Crop added to the Crop tool. That's why I think the implementation needs some work.
      As for getting it right in the studio, well I don't think I've ever looked at a histogram and shoots on set can be fluid and chaotic and change rapidly and often are not even happening in controlled environments like studios. Ecommerce, sure, but a lot of POS is shot on location and models are constantly moving. These features are actually extremely helpful.

    • @zacgrimaldo
      @zacgrimaldo 7 месяцев назад

      In the commercial world, you sometimes shoot to a layout, so things are really tight and sometimes you have to shoot loose, so that the images can be used horizontally or vertically. In fact a good majority of fashion shooter will shoot horizontal in the event it gets used as a double page spread or double truck. If it used as a full page, it will be cropped vertically, not to mention most images are shot for different uses and ADs will change their minds way after the shoot. Professionals or their digit-techs may click on the exposure warning, but very rarely or never do they check a histogram...hope this helps.

    • @friendofarca6550
      @friendofarca6550 7 месяцев назад

      I too can´t think of a situation ai crop during a shooting makes sense. what c1 posted is marketing and does not reflect real world work and btw I did test it and it does not work reliable enough to save any time.

    • @davidgrandy4681
      @davidgrandy4681 7 месяцев назад

      @@StudioBuilder Why is there chaos during a photo shoot in a studio? Is not the photographer in charge? Slow down and control things. I've done studio fashion photography and I want to get the lighting set up first, and I measure the main and fill. If someone is tapping their feet well let them. Those clients and art directors often work by the principle of "There's never time to do it right, but there's always time to do it over." I know what kind of lighting ratio I want. I know if I pull the fill back a bit the ratio may go up, but it's still under control. I never want the lighting to be out of control as that could create terrible problems later. I do check the histogram, not for lighting but to make sure I've got the correct exposure. It's too easy to have one ISO on my flash meter, and a different ISO set on my camera and that has happened. If you don't check then that five stops of underexposure protection you get from a Phase One might come in handy, but it ain't exactly professional.

I have been a pro for 30 years and have had quite a few fits with C1! It is so much better with the sub plan and continues to update. My old studio mate doesn't like change so he has the perpetual license and it suits him just fine. I like anything that will make my job faster and easier and I don't mind learning, so I love the sub version. I'm glad they at least give you that option for now. I am somewhat new to Capture One (1 year in) and I am wondering if you maybe have any incite to what I would consider a minor feature. Will they ever support .PSB's? I have requested this and seen many more online requesting this. I mostly photograph landscape and C1 (IMO) has far superior color rendition but the workflow of trying to keep track of which images I have to bring into Photoshop that end up as .psb is becoming a nuisance. Sorry for the rant just curious if you have the ear of anyone at that company.

    Studio is aimed at a very different market, but I dont understand why they committed so much time to this when the user base for Pro is so big? Or is it because Studio will bring larger revenue? It all seems a bit odd. As many have suggested they need to update the way previews are done, at the moment C1 doesn't make use of new hardware, whereas Lightroom can utilise CPU and GPU cores across different hardware configurations, the preview draw time on C1 is still very slow.

    I don't think you can compare C1 with DR. With DR, there is the free version and the purchased version. The purchased version is a buy-once situation and you get all the new releases going forward. That makes jumping to the Pro version a no-brainer decision. C1 you either have a continual subscription each month or you will need to buy in again when the next "major" release comes out -I put major in quotes as it seems C1 are the ones that decide which releases are major. I started using C1 years ago and there was a shift a few years back where the price increases were well out of step with the new features being offered. With regards to Studio and Pro, they've done this switcheroo thing before but still, each of those are a purchase option. There is no free version of C1 as there is in DR.
    I feel photographers are getting squeezed from both sides and it's only getting worse. Hardware and software providers are increasing their prices and clients are getting more frugal with their budgets. Now with AI solutions getting ridiculously good and many free open source AI apps that don't cost a penny, I feel 'photographer' as a livelihood has died.
