Retro Review: 1991 Ford F-150 SuperCab

- Back in 1990, we realized people were buying more trucks...a lot more! We tested the new F-150 and (correctly) predicted that Ford would continue to dominate the truck market.
Авто/Мото
This truck was 13,000 in 1991 which adjusted for inflation in 2018 is 23,592. But yet in 2018 for a 1500 series truck v8 well equipped runs 50,000-60,000 sad greedy world we live in.
that being said, think about what a “fully equipped” truck was back in the day. it meant AC, ABS, maybe an airbag, a better powertrain and tow rating, and bucket seats. the base level trucks today come with all that and more as standard, so really a base level truck today is about what a top tier truck would have been back in the day. doesn’t excuse how much they’re charging for a base truck (if you can even find one)
@@johnclark6139 I miss the trucks and how they were back then. Nothing you didn’t need or want, tastefully designed, MUCH more affordable, in quite a few ways more robust, less to go wrong and break, and oh how I miss real wheels and tires. More side wall for a better ride, didn’t have to constantly worry about scraping the wheels off of pretty much everything, and much much cheaper! Oh and have to add that anything bigger than a 17 or 18” wheel on a pickup looks so goofy. Like it’s some life size Hot Wheels haha
Nah, gimme a 16 or 17 at most
And a 15 is plenty on older trucks
But the main thing is all the shit on trucks today that most will never use but you can’t get one without it.
All this electronic drive mode, park sensor, traction control, auto stop start, lane assist, auto braking BS that is adding nearby $10,000 to the base price of a truck. And most of that stuff is shit that many will never need nor use.
Dont ya just love wasting thousands upon thousands of dollars?
I think I’d rather find a good used 90s Ford (especially one with the 300 six)
@@johnclark6139 thats the problem. People who actually use trucks don't need anything fancy.
And don't forget they are over computerizing the crap out of everything in vehicles and that is really blowing up in their faces with these chip shortages. Now the windshield wipers are controlled by a computer module. Were we suffering back in the '80s and 90s with the basic electronic or mechanically controlled wipers? It's really ridiculous. Before long there will be a computer module just to pop open the fuel lid, if there isn't already. That stuff really adds up. I don't like any of that crap because it's all destined to tear up and it's all going to cost you extra money.
We can make excuses why they are now so expensive but the real reason they are so expensive is because idiots will pay it.
I'm a GM guy and I still say that Ford made damn good trucks from the 70's to the 90's. Now nobody makes a good simple dependable truck that won't rust to shit in 15 years. The truck shown here in standard cab with the XLT package a 5-speed, 4X4 and the 300 I-6 or 302/351 with modern fuel injection would sell like crazy today. Bet on it!
GM here too. Hard to argue with older ford trucks. Their doors actually shut and the seats don’t disintegrate. Ford trucks of 69-91 imo are better than GM but I prefer GM motors. Especially the LS over coyote.
The good old days when trucks were basic and affordable...20K fully loaded and available with a 7.3liter diesel that would reliably go 400K miles😳
I have never seen an F150 with the diesel engine...don't think that was actually an option, it was when you stepped up to the F250 but I don't recall it ever being an option in the F150's.
When adjusted for inflation, a comparable new truck will actually be cheaper. Besides that, it will also be safer and cleaner running.
*"When adjusted for inflation, a comparable new truck will actually be cheaper."*
Um, ORLY, Felix? You got the math on that one handy? The truck was sold in 1991 (or late 90), and cost $13,323 for an XLT Lariat Supercab.
Ball's in your court...
+William Todd
Video says you could, but I question the wisdom of putting such a capable work engine in a half-ton. You'd be limited by the GVWR and tow rating far more so than the engine; with the Diesel being heavier, it would actually haul less (legally) than even the I-6 gasser!
If you'd "spring" for the Diesel, it would make sense to pay "a few dollars more" and get a 3/4 ton, at least. Unless they had an unloved F150 w/ 7.3IDI on the dealer's lot, and were letting it go super cheap!
+bcubed72 Yes, even though this is called the "Lariat", it's actually very basic by today's standards, more basic than even the base model 2017 F150 in most ways. This truck doesn't even have powered mirrors or full airbags, and most certainly doesn't comply with any of today's emissions or crash standards. Beside that, it doesn't even have the capability of even the base V6 F150. And when adjusted for inflation, $15,785 = $28,232.55 in 2017. That actually makes it more expensive.
Man, that Ford Nite still looks good today!
When I was a kid, I always liked this particular iteration of the F-150 SuperCab. It looked tough, but not overly so. Plus, I still see them on the road over 20 years later, still looking great. I see more of the 92-96 SuperCabs, but I still smile a little when I see one of these still on the highway.
One of my favorite retro reviews. My Dad special ordered a 91 F150 XLT Lariat 2wd with the 5.0. I recall it cost around $17,500. Kept it for 12 years and over 200k and no major issues whatsoever.
By far my favorite body style! Simple, reliable, affordable. I admired the modern tech packed in the news ones but you just can't beat these old workhorses!
I love this body style of F-Series, 1987 and 1988 is my favorite
This bodstyle of Ford F Series is my favorirte, 87 and 88
that 4.9 l straight six was a great engine
It as also known as the 300 CID straight 6 came out in 1961. Came out after Chrysler 225 slant 6 in 1959 which was used always up until 1988. The 225 Slant six (3.9L) was used in the Dakota always until its demise in 2009 I think was alright but not as good as the cast iron 225 slant 6.
Mine still is. I have a 1993 F150 XL with a 4.9 5 spd,will flat out pull and outlast my 2001 F150 Supercrew 4.6 Liter Automatic.
@@lawnmowermanlawnmowerman9930 i have a 94 4.9 5 speed. Its an awesome truck.
Oh I agree. Coupled with the 5 speed manual it was great! Mine was a 1990 and I am sorry I let it go.
Leo Durocher Had one in my 1996 F-150 I just sold. She was gutless, but took quite a beating.
Today's trucks have tripled in price since the early '90s. But the average U.S. income hasn't. There is your problem. It's gotten out of control.
You need to factor in inflation. So 10 grand back then will be closer to 30 grand in today's money
Yup. Was at the Toyota dealership today and a loaded trd pro Tacoma is 60k! WTF? An SL 500 loaded Mercedes Benz was that in the 90s. I can't afford new anymore. Had a new 93 Z71 GMC extra cab loaded 23,900
Womb Raider
I’d rather find an older truck and even work on it a bit if needed. You can’t get a new one in manual
@Womb Raider sticker to sticker since we don't know what negotiations there were.
@@TheScrubmuffin69 still a factory worker in the 80s- 90s made 15-20+ per hour. Same ppl in the 2000s made much less. Factory worker today is lucky to get $15per hour now. My mother made about $16/ hr in the early 90s same position pays LESS now 20 years after she left. Only low income jobs went up
A much appreciated upload! That "Nite" edition F-150 is deliciously 90's
Would love to own one
@@oliverdelgado6952 i wonder how many are still around
I love this F150 Nite, beautifull truck
87-91 ford trucks/bronco- that bucket seat interior plus that particular dash/windshied angle made for IMO the most comfortable truck Ford has ever made. You sit upright, everything is easy to see, outside and in. Everything is easy to reach, radio, etc. Doors were still close enough to the seat you could hang your arm out the window if you wanted. And lets not forget the long lost triangle vent windows. As the video mentions, the engines were suitable for the time, and reliable. The brakes were good, for a truck, for the period. Go look up some late 80's Chev/GMC reviews to see what the competitions brakes were like(the K5 Blazer would put you in the ditch with hard braking) 91 was also the very last year of the solid frame f150. 92 introduced a body style refresh and a crumple frame, along with a significant interior revision. To all the people ranting about engine HP, this truck had a curb weight of about 3900 lbs. That is actually less than a 2017 Ford Taurus. It's only about 150lbs more than a 2017 Honda Accord. They are trucks. The Ford small blocks can easily add 100HP with aftermarket bolt ons, without touching the short block, just by putting some more modern design heads and cams on, and will be 100% daily driver friendly and maintain most of it's fuel economy, in some cases improving it. Funny what 25 years of technology advancemt can do.
I miss the vent windows. They were awesome!
So very true, also the HP and torque ratings were downplayed in these trucks for insurance reasons so what people see on paper isn't really what they were capable of. I have the 88 F250 4x4 XLT Lariat Supercab with the 7.5L 460 V8, still going strong as is the 3 speed automatic transmission and that truck has spent most of its live towing/hauling, currently the odometer is at a little over 490k. Haven't done any engine or transmission work other than regular maintenance and transmission serviced very 35k.
Wouldn't want one of the new trucks at all.
I daily drive my 1995 super cab f150 with the original 5.0 it has as of right now 336,200 miles on it. I have owed it since 2007 had a many person try to buy it I will never sell it
Such a good looking truck......wish they still had this appearance
Yes i know!! Bricknose forever!!
F250 plat in black is a monster but the price tag is 100k
Totally agree brother.
he still could've carried that plywood with the tailgate closed if he put it on an angle
Yes, but people want to lay the plywood flat. Clearly is not (and was not) a big deal, but this is MW we are talking about. Mr. Davis hates it when there is not an ammeter and voltmeter on the dash, something that is exceedingly rare in 2019!
The intent was to show the size of the bed, which he perfectly accomplished.
How many construction workers are going to load up 20 pieces of plywood at an angle?
Same type now days will cost you $50k. No lie. I just looked the other day. Welp, looks like ima buying used forever.
Slug Jones yup my uncle looked at a pick up with some options...he died whey they told him $70k not included final fees and taxes xD.
bought himself an Ls series (late 90's) with 27k miles and called it a day.
or you can just finance a new one and have one easy monthly payment every month for the rest of your life 😂 Id rather have the old one myself.. they dont build em like they used to!
my dad had a 1992 F150 Custom 4.9 I6 with the stick, regular cab.. loved that damn truck it was a bull.. lots of torque and never let us down
Mike Baer I know that's what I love about the old trucks man is that you don't have to be in huge dept unlike you would with a new car or truck and they'll outlast them as well.
CJ Colvin agreed.. all my freinds taking out loans on $20k used trucks and they end up in the shop half the time whereas my $2k Ranger has never ben in the shop.. and its got 240,000 racked on the odometer lol
Great trucks. I still see lots of these still in use.
Same here, in Argentina you see them everywhere
The 5.8 was dependable but sure loved gas......the prices sure are jaw dropping, especially compared to present day- wow!
Yeah, the 5.0 was a better option for a balance of power and mpg.
Dude the 7.5 was worse 😂😂😂
Could be worse try daily driving one now a days
idk what you are talking about. i get 17-19 on the highway with the 5.8
Starting at $10k and fully loaded at $20k? Holy crap I wish I could buy trucks back then. Nowadays a decent loaded F150 will cost around $45k and up to $70k
Sinister yeah and a guy working in a mill or on an assembly line could support his family without his wife also working....
I go so tired of hearing these comments that I decided to do some reserch. The truth is those $45k F-150 XLT's sale for anywhere from $12k to $15k below sticker. So that $45k truck may only cost you $30k before ttl. Upon further investigation Ford claims to not make much if anything on XL and XLT trim sales. Now you may have a legit beef with the Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum and Limited because we all know it does not cost Ford that much more money to build the upper trim F150's. But at the same time I have really been paying attention to sales here lately and the last 2016 F-150 Limited that was sold in my area sold for $10k less that sticker.
redd7188 So that means rebates back then would've taken off an additional $5k- $8k off a $10k MSRP? Damn now I really wish I could've bought a truck back in 1990.
what would you be willing to pay for a pickup today?
a base f150 today with inflation is similar in price to this base model f150
My dream truck in high school was an F-series Super Cab with the XLT/Lariat trim & either the 302 or 351 V8 with the E40D 4-speed overdrive automatic!!!!!! AWESOME FIND!!!!!
Nice retro review as always Motorweek. I love the reviews coming every Thursday
WD WILL DESTROY YOU
I used to have one of these as my first truck in high school, Mine was a solid blue XLT Lariat (top of the line for its day). Was an excellent truck and ran great! Today I have the 2011 Version of this haha.
31 years later, F-150 still leading in sales.
my dad had one of these! i remember when first got out the dealer. loved that new truck smell.
I still have my 88 f250hd with it's 460 ci engine, 5 spd stick. Supercab, 8ft bed, 4wd.
AND...
My 95 f150xl 302, auto. Supercab, 7ft bed 4wd.
Both run great! Both have the spring bench front seat--if you have back troubles like I do, these are THE BEST!!!
I wish today's trucks were this good!
I love the long, wide wheel base---they ride as smooth as a caddie! Again, a big deal if you have back trouble!!!
These are some of the best pickups ever built. This coming from an ex-chevy Man!!!
so that's what that old engine looked like new! I love these retro reviews!
What happened, trucks are so expensive now, I thought our '99 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer had a very hefty sticker price at little over $39,000. a comparable new Expedition is nearly $70,000! The new ones don't even have V8s!
Sean James the 39k is 57k in today's money. Still though new cars are getting pretty expensive.
Sean James my 04 expedition Eddie Bauer was $49,150 in today's money that's $63,383 so it now isn't that far off a fully loaded 2017 expedition and those have a shit ton more option than mine will ever have.
Shawn Prickett we also had an '04 Expedition Eddie Bauer, green, bought it back in '06 second hand. I agree, my comparison wasn't ideal to get my point across, would've used our '96 F150 4x4 Supercab for the comparison, but I did not buy it brand new, we no longer have the vehicle either.
Sean James my dad bought it and he still has the 04 with 145,000 miles. I have a 06 F-150 with 70K miles I'm trading up to something newer and financing it so I can have something new with no problems my f-150 has rust issues and a header leak.
Shawn Prickett our '04 only had 105,000 miles on it when we traded it, we would still have it to this day if it weren't for the passenger side rockers rusting out, you could've stuck your hand in there and move it from one end of the doors to the other.
We traded it in November for a new 2017 F150 5.0 Lariat 502A Crew cab, we got $3,500 of trade in value.
Oh by the way washing it by hand weekly caused water build up between the body and running boards, of course, causing the rot. Other than the rockers it was a perfect truck, like new condition.
We still own the '99, it's currently a company vehicle, 450,000 miles and counting!
Man, I love this show! Can’t stop watching.
Prices have gotten crazy. Car companies need to offer more affordable models of pickups these days. I’ve recently priced some new ones and forget it! Thank heaven there are plenty of good used ones out there.
Roughly speaking, $10,220 in 1991 has the same buying power as $18,438 in 2017. Why then, with all of the leaps forward in automation, technologies, and engineering/production efficiencies, is the cheapest F-150 starting at $27,328?

Kcducttaper1 safety stuff also. I would love a decent older truck.
At that time, trucks were just work vehicles. Automatics, power steering, and air conditioning weren't as common as they are now. Most people didn't want them as daily transport. Demand outside of fleets and the business/farm market was low. It's when people started buying them for DDs that made them get more stylish and full of creature comfort. Demand goes up, prices go up.
Because of all the stupid electronic dash and stuff. Also they insist on having a slushbox in them
AC, automatic transmission, safety equpment, aluminum body emissions.
Hahaha lol at inflation in 2017
I love watching these old videos.
Those F-Series trucks are legendary, I grown up in Brazil , we also had those there , then I moved to Australia in the end of the 90’s and luckily we also have them in Australia.... I love Ford trucks so much especially this era showing here , such a tough trucks and so awesomely luxurious, I’ve seen few like this one here in Australia like show room condition....
I love this motor week review thank you so much for posting.
Australia 🇦🇺
How does this early 90's pickup have virtually zero nose dive? That's pretty darn baffling and amazing at the same time!
It truly is amazing how much better trucks are today. So much more capable and nice
The most comfortable vehicle seats I ever sat in were in a '91 Ford Lariat that I had as a work truck in 2000.
200,000 miles left the 302 a bit gutless on the interstate, which made it perfect for a kid just out of high school.
I had the 94 xl model, two tone blue. It was the six with the 5 speed manual, rubber floor, hand crank windows. It came with the factory aluminum wheels and overall was a nice looking truck.
Wow first time I hear about the Nite edition. Never seen one on the road. This is awesome MW!
I had forgotten about those Nite trucks...almost a precursor to the Lightning?
I am building an '88 ford reg cab long box to Nite specs. Thanks for providing content of how my truck should look like
"Quality is Job 1" motto was accurate for the F-series
2:40 “Many of the cars we tested should’ve offered this much information.... “ Ford trucks man have always been a few notches above the rest .... bless Henry Ford ...
MotorWeek added a new Retro Review = best Monday ever.
Wow, the truck in the beginning that's grey with silver is exactly like the one my dad bought new in April 1990. It was a Supercab, longbox, 4x4, 5.0, 5-speed. I remember he hated parking it because it was such a boat.
my dad had a 91 f150 lariat brand new. It was a great truck
Chris Bowman my pops is still driving his 91 F150 XLT Lariat. The truck wont quit.
Ive owned 2 of these. An 89 short bed reg cab and a 91 long bed reg cab. Both 4x2 with 5.0 AOD. Good durable trucks for work, farm, or play.
1990 F150 regular cab 302 auto was my first vehical I loved that truck.
My dad bought his 89 F-150 brand new and it had that red interior with captain's chairs just like the test truck. Talk about a flood of memories. Those back seats sucked! You could get a 4 inch lift for the seat and it still sucked. Rode from Texas to Colorado when I was 8 or 9 and it was torture, haha!
When I was in high school, I had a two tone silver supercab just like the one John Davis stood by in the segment intro. I miss that truck!
Yep my 88 F250 has the rear seat riser kit in it, its fine for little kids but you wouldn't want to ride back there as an adult, but the back seat in mine stays folded down and I keep work gear and coolers, tools, etc back there.
I remember how "modern" this truck looked when this body style first came out. Times change.
When trucks were trucks!!
I bought a brand new 1987 F150 Lariat when I was 18. I was on top of the world. I had many trucks since then and up until I bought my 2014 GMC Sierra, it was my favorite of all the trucks I owned.
Thank you for sharing this!
I’m on love with that clean engine bay
Wow this brings me back. My father had one. it was blue and was a super cab with power mirrors... he used it haul us but it constantly broke down. -_- we nicknamed it Dinosaur because was big.
Back when trucks were trucks! Now it's just hi tech and confusing.
0:34 damm this is the SHORT wheelbase version of the truck?? damn i miss the 80s/90s😭🤣😭
I have an '89 F-250 and love it. Wish I was able to experience it new but oh well.
V8 power, 4-wheel drive, simple, no-nonsense interior... This is the way a truck ought to be.
$60,000 luxury trucks are a disgrace.
*like a god neighbor state farm is there*
AtomicGamingSnake *good
computerguy5437 -- I guess being called "god" ain't too bad, either. hehe
When I was a teenager I bought a brand new Nissan Frontier 4x4 with A/C had 4 wheel ABS but power nothing, roll up windows, no power seats(had bench seat) and had lock outs the price out the door was $13,800 in 1998 and that 4 banger made 143 hp Try finding a 4x4 truck today for that full or midsize
Why don't you buy a horse and wagon.
My God but I miss REAL pickups.
Seth Thomas Ford needs to bring back this old body like they did with the ford mustang and dodge with the challenger.
I still have my 94 f150 5.0L
I have a 1996 Ford F150 with a 5.0L (302) Windsor V8 with 209,000 miles and still going strong.
The mystery gloved-hand tester strikes again! I wonder if he is still wearing his glove in 2019? Probably makes doing anything on the touchscreen display very difficult!
I have a 91 XLT Lariat that my Dad bought brand new, 200,000 miles and still runs like a champ
I had a 1989 ext cab with the legendary inline 4.9 very solid and dependable pick ups ford ever made!
I wasn't expecting to see the Nite, I had a '92 standard cab flareside boy I miss that truck.
Man do I miss that red interior. My 1992 Explorer had the same color interior and I loved it. It never seemed to fade or tear and I was not easy on that thing by any means. Always cleaned up nice and it smelled like a Ford. I don't know what it is but all old Ford's smell the same lol every time I get in one my childhood flashes back at me.
'92 to '96 body style was my favourite F-series
Where did the cab marker lights come from
Until now, I didn't know there was a night edition F series truck. I now have something new to look for while browsing for things for sale.
I had a 1990 F-150 2wd with the I-6 and 5 speed back in the day. It looked just like this truck but black! It was a good truck! Last I saw it, it had over 200,000 miles on it and it was full or rust.
Still see em around, never owned one but they look like good workhorses
Have any retro reviews of a Silverado by any chance?
Also, oh how far Ford went, F-150 now Turbo V6 lol
I'll never forget seeing the "Nite" edition truck for the first time. I was a kid and thought it was something special. It wasn't nothing more than an appearance package.
Did you miss the part where the said it has custom suspension..?
I had an loaded 87' and it was a GREAT truck.
It just hurts me knowing I can’t own one of these trucks new. Second owner of a 94 2wd inline 6, 188k, still have the warranty card and window sticker, 13k
And still better quality than a Motorweek video from 2012!
I've always liked those old F-150's
So funny when i see one of these old trucks today with that red interior i always think its really faded.I now notice that the red came that way when it was new.
No they were a bit brighter red when they were new, most just faded over time as all interiors do also all the wear from people sliding in and out of the vehicle and such, I kept the seat covers on mine so the seats in my 88 F250 still look new as did the seat in my 84 Ranger when I sold it in 2002. Its all in taking care of the vehicle which many seem to forget I guess because you sure see a lot of destroyed interiors even in newer vehicles :(.
i have the same truck, same year, same trim, just different engine. mines a 5.0 302. my front seat is a bench seat. and i didnt know the back seats can fold
3:34 the nite may have looked like any other paint and body package back then but it sure it's beautiful today!
Esta pickup es la mejor de la serie F-150 muy bonita .
A friend in high school drove one, it had over two hundred thousand miles and we couldn't break it. With the inline 6 cylinder engine it was ridiculously slow.
Straight to the point trucks!
Just finished puttin a starter in my old 1990 with 160,000
Kilometers. These old trucks are nice.but they start to nickel and dime ya when they get this old.
But I luv it.
love that truck
Did dodge intrepid was ever reviewed I can’t find a single video about it
My 1990 F250 diesel cost 14,000 brand new! It has held up well and has hardly rusted. Bought it 12 years ago for 1000 dollars and have had to do many repairs but now it's so reliable! I intend to restore it someday.
Damn it must have been a base model with no options to be that cheap new. My first truck in high school was a 1990 F-150 XLT Lariat and it still had the window sticker, it was stickered at nearly $17,000 dollars.
i miss them trucks 80-90 best ford trucks ever. had a 96 5.0 4x4 offroad ext cab. lots of good and bad memories. truck never let me down and i was hard on the old girl.
Just got a 1990 ford f-150 supercab for just $2,000. Love it
Build these again and I will buy one immediately.
This is identical to the truck I learned to drive on as an 8 year old in the pasture behind our house.
0:20 My grandfather has that truck with the exact same color but a single cab.
Looks like this truck might not have had the "handling package" which gave front and rear sway bars. The rear bar is quite visible from behind.
Prob my fav generation of F 150s
Always wanted one!
3:53 makes me wonder how many CHevy and GMC C/K series sold that year?
Back in the day when real work trucks were built you could afford.
These vids are awesome lol
The dudes gloves are awesome
I was wanting to restore a 1992 but now I'm torn cause I like the exterior of the 92 and the interior of the 91 !
How come they went from this to the ecoboost?
But...will it blend?
I sure do like how those Nite trucks look but I myself have a FreeWheelin truck
They mention that there were 5 engine options - Can someone tell me if the 460 ci gas engine was an option in '91?
daddygoncrazy yes, right up to the end of the generation. Was offered in f250 and higher trucks for heavy hauling, usually with a manual transmission.
Had same truck as the two-tone one with same interior. The folding rear seat was a great idea, but the material on the back of the seat might as well be teflon -- cargo slid all over the place, ridiculous! The power steering sounded like a scalded jackrabbit. But those were the good old days.
If u have a Lincoln Blackwood review upload it.
Man those 5.8 Windsor are bulletproof when they are well taken care off. Those old ford trucks where real work trucks.
Yep, the 351 was a great engine, and arguably better than the 350 Chevy's of the day. That'll really ruffle the Chevy guys feathers, but the up until 1995 or so when GM started giving the Vortec treatment to the 350's, the 351 was the better performer and equally as reliable.
