- SPRAY-WATER!
There’s no denying that some of the most delightful and entertaining moments with elephants involve water! Most elephants absolutely adore it, often becoming quite playful when splashing around. In episode 15 of our Elephant Behaviour Series, we focus on the "Spray-Water" behaviour, examining the playful antics that occur in two main contexts: "Lone & Object Play" and "Social Play." However, at HERD, we’ve identified a third context that Elephant Voices refer to as "Novel & Idiosyncratic." This is because two of the elephants in our care have developed a unique habit of spraying water while enjoying a refreshing drink. Tune in to find out which elephants we’re highlighting!
A big thank you to the Elephant Voices team for making their research accessible through the Elephant Ethogram. This platform offers invaluable insights into elephant behaviors for everyone to explore.

* Our elephant behaviour videos highlight a range of fascinating behaviours observed in the unique semi-habituated Jabulani Herd. Utilising the information from the Elephant Ethogram-a public platform developed and generously shared by the team at Elephant Voices-we present some of the more commonly seen physical behaviours. Through a series of easy to understand examples featuring individual behaviours, we aim to provide insight into some of the surface complexities of elephant behaviour. It's important to note that all behaviours are subject to interpretation and are influenced by various contributing factors that we take into account.*
Like a child that blow bubbles in their milk. A form of self entertainment.
Loved it when Lundi sprayed water at Adine❤ it also gave us a quick remembrance of our little pink Princess Khanyisa as a new member of the HERD and Lundi being her new Mommy❤❤🐘🐘❤️❤️

Oh, wow. It's wonderful to hear how much you enjoyed watching the elephants! Here's to many more delightful elephant moments 🐘💦🎄.
Jabulani looked like washing his face and trunk 😂
Good morning. This was a very interesting video. I Always thought that this was done to clean out their trunk. I now stand corrected. It was very funny to watch Lundi 🐘 spray Adine. I knew that Lundi 🐘 and Tokwe 🐘 did the water spraying but never noticed that Somopane 🐘 did it also.
So in this episode I learned something new. Thank you for this episode and showing us Lundi 's 🐘 funny side 😂.❤️🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘❤️
Thanks for watching! Somopane's water spraying antics are always entertaining.
I have seen Mambo spray as well. He sprayed the carers.

Thank you. The education and knowledge that you have taught us about elephants, is amazing. I have truly enjoyed all of your videos. There is so much to know about elephants. I love them all, especially the Adine family and carers. Have a very, very, Merry Christmas. 🇺🇸💕🌴🎄🌺💗
We are so glad you're enjoying the series! Season's greetings.
Lovely play, regardless of herd status.
Hi everyone. Very interesting and informative video. I love these majestic animals.. Thank you all carers at 🐘🐘the Herd. ❤🙏🙏🙏
I wonder if the Carer's line up to get a refreshing spray from Lundi on a hot sunny day!! 😆. Thank you for this very informative video! Have a beautiful day!
Absolutely wonderful play by play this is really a great learning experience while watching wildlife videos I often wonder why are they doing what they’re doing and how this video is truly wonderful thank you so very much the more we learn the more we love thank you
It’s so rewarding to share these fascinating moments with you!
Could the elephants also be practicing a form of clearing or cleansing the nostrils? Seems likely when you consider all of their trunks uses. We wash our hands frequently...😊😊
Absolutely! Elephants' trunks are incredibly versatile, and using them to clear or cleanse their nostrils is definitely one of their many functions.
Merry Christmas Everyone and ellies too!!
A fascinating video!!!
I am 😅😅😅!
I adore their water fountain trunkies!!!
So cuuuute❤❤❤
Wishing you a joyful holiday season.🎄🐘❤️
Sebakwe sprayed down one the carers while carer was filming . It was very playful and cheeky :)

Beautiful elephants 🐘 😊
Thanks for watching!
Many thanks for a very interesting video, I wonder if carer's ever get sprayed, whilst being near a Ellie, 😀 ☔🐘🐘🐘🐘🤗❤️
Oh, yes, they do. Apparently, everyone needs a bit of cooling sometimes.🐘😉
That was interesting and fun. The little wild ele and Jabu both had such fun playing, and maybe showing off a little, with their spraying skills.😅 And Lundi's water shot at Adine was a riot! Thank you so much! ❤❤❤❤❤
It was definitely a "spraying" video, thanks for watching.
Yes, they indeed have a little trick up their trunk or rather water. 🙃🐘.
I love this series inspired by the Elephant Ethogram. It always teaches me something new.
It rather amazes me just how much water their trunk can hold at one time. It's the original multi-tool: a hand, a snorkel, a hose, & a straw.
I'm curious: do they ever spray at each other?
Watching them have a water fight would be hilarious!
Yes, they do! And it can get quite playful! 🐘💧
The wild elephant 🐘 really seemed to be experimenting. When Lundi sprayed Adine and Adine really laughed Lundi turned her head listening to the sound! Merry Christmas and happy holidays everyone! 🎄❤️🙏🇨🇦
Elephants are known for their playful and curious nature, and it's always heartwarming to see them enjoying themselves. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and happy holidays too! 🎄🐘
Lundi and Somopane 💦 😂
Thank you all! 🐘💕
This is TV quality your posting lately 👌 Well done all involved 👏👏👏👏 Love to all and a very merry Christmas 🙏❤️🐘
That is very kind of you, we appreciate you saying so. Happy Holidays 🎄🐘.
The bull elephants are so magnificent. I wonder if any of them will be super tuskers in the future. I really enjoy these educational videos about elephant behavior. Looking forward to more of them Adine. Merry Christmas to you & your loved ones and to all the carers and their families. From an 🇺🇸grandmother
Merry Christmas, Monica, from South Africa. 🎄
Fascinating 👏🏻 I did know about Lundi; from her spraying Adine 😂 But Somopane was a surprise. I loved Jabulani; in a little world of his own amusing himself. Too cute. Did anyone spot the resident hippo? 😅❤️🐘❤️
Lundi's playful spraying and Jabulani's amusing antics is always a delightful to watch. Hippo, visits can be very elusive and when they do make an appearance, it's always a treat! 🦛
what a great idea for a series! super interesting
“No need to explain it to the audiences I’ll demonstrate why we do it, HEY FISHAN”
You can assume what happens from there
So great to learn like this! thanks,,!
And here I was thinking they were cleaning their trunks out from mud sand and foliage. How about when it is done on purpose as Sebakwe likes to spray the carers and Adine and Mambo who likes to get Adine with mud lol. I know that beautiful bull does it on purpose lol.
Spraying water or mud at their carers and each other can be a form of play or even a way to show affection. Thanks for your support.
💕
Oh how fascinating!! It’s like watching a group of teens in a pool! lol. I had to laugh Everytime they sprayed! Thank you so much for your series and your information. I truly appreciate it. Blessings always! 😊🙏❤️
It truly is a joy to watch them play.
I absolutely love these behavioral series episodes.
In this one, I again wonder about the multiple possibilities for the behavior reasons other than "play" (or maybe both or several 'reasons' at the same time). For examples, the water spraying could be: hygiene (cleaning dirt, sand, gunk from the trunk cavity, cleaning the teeth/gums/incisors; cleaning other parts such as the underside of the trunk); soothing or attempting to dislodge irritants; muscle exercise; dexterity practice; deterring terrapins; etc.
Admittedly, I don't know them anything like the experts at HERD or Elephant Voices, and the behaviors do appear very humorous and playful, so I yield my wondering to your explanations. They are such intelligent beings, I have no doubt they do have a sense of humor and playfulness, and I had a good laugh at several of these scenes.
You've hit the nail on the head, there are indeed many reasons for this behaviour beyond simple "play"! We're glad you enjoyed the video and appreciate your thoughtful insights.
Hahaha!! So fun to watch❤️❤️🐘🐘!!
Merry Christmas, Adine. 😊🎄🎅
Approximately how much water does an elephant drink in a day?
200 litres
About 5 bathtubs 🛁 full for adults!
On average, an adult elephant can consume between 70 to 100 litres (18 to 26 gallons) of water each day. However, in hotter climates or during periods of high activity, they might drink even more to stay hydrated.
What fun to see this come up this morning! I was watching an older video just yesterday and a group of the herd was standing at the water’s edge drinking when I noticed two of them, Lundi and another one, drinking part of their water them throwing out their trunks and spraying the rest out. It was the first time I noticed this in your videos, I only started watching your HERD about 3 weeks ago, and I was wondering why the heck they were doing that! Then this morning I get my answer! Too funny that you posted this the day after I was wondering why! I absolutely LOVE watching your beautiful videos and learning more about these magnificent creatures and the wonderful, needed work you all do there!!! Bless everyone of you, you all are suck kind, caring, Grace filled people! ❤️🐘❤️🐘❤️🐘❤️
Welcome, we hope to have many more interactions with you. So glad you enjoyed the video and the answer to your question!
Lundi and Sebawake, have both sprayed the carers
The Wild Elephant seems to be having a good time playing with the water all by himself!
Certains comportements d’auto pulvérisation dans leur propre bouche comme l’éléphant sauvage ou Jabulani font penser à une sorte de nettoyage buccal : un véritable hydrojet …..
🙏❤️🐘
HI EVERYONE 💕
Hello 💕
So funny how they play with water. I remember when I was a kid playing like that forcing water through my hands spraying water. 😂
What about elephants' pharyngeal pouch ? Please, can you tell us more about it ? Thank you.
The pharyngeal pouch is a remarkable adaptation that allows elephants to store up to 4 litres of water. This stored water can be crucial for survival in extreme conditions, helping to maintain their body functions. Additionally, the pharyngeal pouch plays a significant role in the production of the low-frequency rumbling sounds that elephants use for communication. These sounds can travel long distances, allowing elephants to stay in touch with each other even when they are far apart.

Happy Christmas and New Year!
Humans have just got around to inventing water flossing. Eles have been doing it for thousands of years. ❤️🐘❤️ Eles - 1, Humans - 0.
Well said, 👏.
At 11:30 that elephant more splashes from the surface than sprays from the trunk - in the blooper video part
I wonder if part of the reason Lundi developed it as a habit is because she likes to mess with the rhinos. I've often seen her do that to the rhinos to agitate them out of the water so she can chase them. I wonder if when she sprays the pond like that she is also checking for responses from any possible problems.
Hello Adine, I always love elephants so much, they are so beautiful & intelligent. 😊 I would like to visit your elephants. 💜
Thank you so much for your kind words!
@ Merry Christmas to you guys at the sanctuary. 😊💜🎄🎅
Thank you, I love these videos ❤️💦
Looks like he is also cleaning their trunk out
You know, when I do that, my wife calls it neither novel, nor idiosyncratic...
lil shit💖hehehe
I enjoy the Elephants. I do not enjoy your anthropomorphizing of them. And though they have similar looking interactions, your conclusions are VERY assuming.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! We appreciate your perspective on anthropomorphism. Our goal is to showcase the fascinating behaviours of elephants while grounding our observations in the extensive research conducted over the past fifty years by the team at Elephant Voices. We aim to present their actions in a way that highlights their unique traits and the complexities of their social interactions. By making these behaviors relatable, we hope to educate viewers and inspire a deeper interest in the remarkable world of elephants.
