  • What's the difference between normal aging and dementia? Besides the disease itself, one of the most frustrating things is the medical community. Let's start with the so-called "age-related dementia."

What you spoke of here relates to my mother-in-law. She has dementia but we don't know what kind. At times it seems like she is getting worse and other times okay.

Thank you so much for your time and your insight. Your video style is so relaxed , like a friend is just sitting and talking with me. I came across your channel about a year ago when my mom went into an assisted living facility . Your videos were God sent.
I also purchased and read your book La Belle Communaute.
I LOVED it! I laughed. I cried , as well as , learned some things about dementia.
Thank you again Deborah for being genuine!

Thanks! My intent when I started the channel was to be real about things. Everyone's experience is different and yet somewhat the same. When I looked for videos, I found that many seemed to think they had a simple answer to getting a person with dementia to do/understand something. There is no "one answer," - and what worked today may not work next week. Things aren't that simple. Thanks for supporting the book endeavor - I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I came upon your channel awhile back and sent a few videos to my bf in Northern California that has been watching over his Mother with Dementia for the last 5 years. It has been a very trying time for him. I so wish he could personally talk with you Deborah. He really liked your no-nonsense and being straightforward with this disease. His Mom is getting towards the last stage we believe where she has limited mobility, loss of appetite and just seems to stare out in space. He has had his half sister there this month to help. ( he is 67 sis is 70 ) Your channel has helped many …
    God Bless You🙏✝️

Thank you for the insight which was very well presented, as usual. My husband was officially diagnosed six years ago, at age 59. He stayed in the early/moderate stages until early last year, when he noticeably began declining. And this year he is slipping even faster. He is unable to comprehend anything, but does still remember who I am, and our two children. Our 92-year old neighbor on the other hand, although experiencing some age-related “senility,” is much more aware and able to understand what is going on around her. To prove your point😉

Many of my relatives lived well into their 80s and 90s with no cognitive decline. The medical community is all over the place with this disease.

I agree 💯 Debra. Dementia is not age related. I know many older ones in their 70's -90's and they are able to function on their own quite well.

@@lifeunderdeborahspalm-thed8114 The book was an AMAZING read Deb! I purchased and read it on kindle and when I finished it, I purchased it in paperback because I knew I would want to refer to it often. I read so many passages aloud to hubs as well because we are on this journey with my Mum. Superb writing. I hope you are working on another book. Your storytelling is brilliant! Such heart and humor!
I pray you are all okay now that you are finally on the other side of that difficult path. You were a beautiful gift to your families and now are a gift to the world Deb. Thank you for writing "La Belle Communauté". It has personally been the most meaningful book I've read and it honors those you loved and served and is a wonderful guide and aid to those traveling this path. Thank you!

I was wondering if you saw any experience with aggression. My mom is animalistic. The Care Home doesn’t want to keep her.

We did not, but we know someone who did. The person was as nice as could be until they ended up with dementia. Assisted living doesn't allow that behavior. Have they tried medication with your mom?

@@lifeunderdeborahspalm-thed8114 : yes, the medication has mixed results. She nearly goes comatose. The Care home and Psychiatrist are preparing documents to move her to a Psychiatric facility. She had mental health issues since the 60’s. I’ve dug out records and strangely old police reports. My jaw hit the floor at these unknown issues. She was psychiatrically hospitalized on 3 different occasions. The diagnosis from the early 80’s was Borderline Personality Disorder. I think that’s why the secretiveness. Untangling this mess actually explains many things that I couldn’t understand from the past.I am making sure she goes to a private secured facility. Other than screaming and fighting she won’t speak. My father provided well and she will have the best, safest care possible. They used to call them Sanitariums, now they call them Specialized Care homes. It’s pretty far away but I don’t have much choice. They think it’s late stage Lewy Body + BPD.

There can develop dementia from end stage Congestive Heart Failure and also from Alcoholism.

When I first got the keyless car, it took me a couple weeks to adjust, so I can't imagine what it's like for someone who is older and not used to technology let alone cognitive issues.
