Back in the late 90’s at Liverpool, many managers in the PL were so focused on stopping McManaman and him only, as he was the driving force behind that great team. Supremely underrated by those that didn’t watch him.

There's footage of Ferguson giving his Man Utd team talk that focuses purely on concentrating on stopping McManaman.

Various Utd players from the 90s era have since said that no one inspired more fear in Alex Ferguson than McManaman. Apparently, they would be wary of other top players like Shearer, Wright, Ginola, etc...but McManaman was the one Ferguson would devote entire team talks to.

Such an underrated player. Macca would run past players for fun. I think the fact that he looked so casual and not built like a typical footballer meant he has been often overlooked as one of the all time greats.

As a Newcastle fan -- I still have nightmares about this guy. But what a player. Modern footballers are perhaps fitter and more athletic, but the players of this era would annihilate a good modern side. The best Barça sides would let the ball do the work -- but why let the ball do the work, when players like Mcmanaman could just go past players and draw defenders towards him, unlocking teams. Ironically - it was probably Michael Owen's acceleration and pace that forever changed the English recruitment system of players. These things will come full circle again, I am sure. Little wonder English sides look abroad so often for skilled players now. Some of the best players that have existed probably never played at the highest level in English football because they didn't score high enough on a bleep test, or showed too much "character" in the dressing room.

That's not entirely true. Venables was playing 4411/4321/3142 attacking but defended in a 442. Hoddle played 3412 and Scholes was used in Macca's role that he was doing under Roy Evans. Keegan was making up stuff as he went along but he did play 352 sometimes. Sven was the only true 442 man.
Young Macca who was MotM in the 92 FA Cup final and the 95 League Cup finals was more of a winger up til 96. Then, under Evans and up until Real signed Zidane signed Macca was more of a central player who occasional played on the wing.

McManaman seems to have had a wide, evasive dribbling style on the one hand, but also aimed for short passes on the other. If he had played longer on the continent, he would have been able to harmonize his game more.
