      Idk much mandarin but when i do know the words the pronunciation is perfect becuz i copied how my friends say it
      But now because all my friends are chinese, my english is starting to take on a chinese accent 😂 although it only comes out when i'm angry like normally there's no accent but then i rage and in like "WAH LAO WEI SHEN ME NI ZAI WAN ZHE GE YOU XI YING GAI SI DIAO LE" or some shit

      My theory is it is just an extension of fitting into the tribe the language belongs to i.e. natural for self-preservation , kind of how your accent changes when you talk to home language speaker from a different city or location internationally. I do it in English when visiting Ireland wales or Scotland , its so subtle intially and only your family notice it at first (since they know what you actually sound like)

      @PaulBaumann80 I caught on to the grammar fairly quickly (it's basically reverse of English!). And I studied the alphabet daily for several weeks about a year ago but dropped off from that. I listen and speak Thai daily but I really need to get into a structured program as I want to become more fluent and also fluent in reading/writing.

      @@dajourphil0soph3r36 well, I don't stay away, I feel like different languages are complementary as they require similar efforts such as memory, cognition, identification, differentiation etc so I guess sharpening those skills by learning a language will simultaneously be good for other languages that you are learning. Actually, except for the 2. effect (worse first lang) ı dont think any other effects are sgnificantly harmful compared to the gains you get by learning multiple langs. :)

    • @Pundae
      @Pundae 4 года назад +8

      My first language never really got worse. You just always use the wrong language subconsciously. Like I'll go to say something in to one of my friends in one language but it comes out in another cuz I just finished a Russian TV show or something. Once you start speaking it again it comes back and your brain readjusts to it.
      It's like playing a video game you haven't touched in a while. I went from destroying bosses in sekiro to taking tons of damage from regular enemies, and I kept hitting the wrong button to dodge because I'd been playing the witcher, but after like two deaths I fixed my grip, got used to the buttons, and wasn't getting hit by anything.
      I wouldn't say you're first language gets worse, nor do I think you ever forget how to speak it properly, you just get a bit rusty after not using it for a while, which is true for literally everything your brain does.
      Rest is pretty accurate. Like I exaggerate my speech so much in Japanese just because it's fun. Like instead of just saying "okaeri" when I'm talking to friends, I'll go "okaerinasaai". I also speak russian super informally as a joke because me and my friends find russian slang words really funny. One of my friends also always used to leave me voicemails and texts in really angry polish when he got drunk even though he knows I don't speak it lol

    My friends are always amazed when they see me and my siblings argue, because we grew up bilingual and we argue in languages we don't even speak, we learn phrases and then use them intermixed with our fluent languages. We switch mid sentence, or we answer in a different language. It really is a lot of fun to carry on a conversation where everyone is constantly changing what language they are responding with.

    I subbed and bought the ebook. I'll update my progress on learning Arabic.
    I'm Egyptian but live in America. So I know very little Arabic. I was born in Chicago.
    The languages I want to learn are the following:
    Arabic
    Russian (it just sounds cool)
    Japanese
    Spanish (I'm also Hispanic)
    French
    That is what I'm focusing on now. Wish me luck and I hope you guys try to learn some new languages as well!
    2/4/19 - bought the ebook and starting to read
    - Already doing the first few steps of the ebook (obviously I can't specify what the steps are lol) I honestly love the way he talks in the ebook. He is very comforting for someone who is trying to learn a language for the first time. He is very positive and I actually really enjoy the ebook. The programs he suggests are really great and even come with free trials and discounts just for us readers. Honestly, this guy is a great person and I do have faith in myself to learn Arabic!

      Chinese mandarin isn't as difficult as it seems, actually is a "logical" language so grammar is very simple, you just gotta memorize all the characters.     That dream thing is basically;

    I totally can get behind that! the personality change is real and the vocabulary loss is too... My mother tongue is Geman, next was Serbian, then englisch in school, next french and Latin (though I stopped cause our teacher retired) and I also lern Japanese and stared Chinese this yeah (buut couldn‘t continue for now, I will though!) I‘m not sure if I experienced the dream thing though... can‘t remember my dreams well xD what I noticed for myself is: I differentiate between Languages I can think in, means, I don‘t first think in german and translate to it, but actually immediately start thinking in that language, which is German and Serbian, maybe english too sometimes and the ones I usually „have to translate“ how is that for you!

      @yukaowo4249 5 лет назад +2

      Angie Ordóñez that’s awesome!! Korean and Japanese are really similar in grammar structure so if you learn one you can easily transition into the other! Since you know Chinese, learning Japanese first might be a little easier because Japanese uses Kanji (Chinese Characters) - although some characters’ meanings are different some are similar or same. For example Shugorei 守護霊 guardian means protector in Chinese! Just to give you a starter in both languages- Korean has one alphabet, Japanese has 3 (Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji- Hiragana for Japanese characters, Katakana for Foreign characters for example アメリカ amerika (america)), and Kanji is Chinese characters). Arguably Japanese is a more difficult language but since you are familiar with Chinese it may be easier for you. Good luck!
