I personally think that people should deconstruct a language by using their own language and finding all the equivalents and then learning how to use your study language as if it were your own. For example, find out all the pronouns, all adjectives, then find the 20 most common verbs, top 100 every day objects and places, and get basic sentence structure/grammar rules in the study language and make flash cards and study them. Then after hearing music or video's in your study language you will start learning from them 10X faster because you actually KNOW what words are being spoken in the tv and music. I don't believe in learning a language RAW (as in learning it like a baby does). NO matter how much NOISE you hear in the study language, if you don't know what they are saying, you are making very slow progress at best to learn the language. That's why it takes babies 4-5 years to talk despite full immersion in the language 24/7. Turning NOISE into Knowledge is not as effective as building a language blueprint and filling it in like a puzzle.
Wrong. You learn faster if you disconnect your native language to the language you're trying to learn. Think of equivalents in the same language just different, simpler words

Fantastic video Ikenna. You are so articulate and passionate about learning languages and have given me some great tips in my quest to improve my German. Vielen Dank!
So I started serious self studying korean last year and I have sort of discovered these techniques naturally. Though everyone finds different methods more effective than others, I have found that daily immersion in multiple forms and mediums really helpful. Even when I fall off of my formal studying in my books or audio/video lessons..I find my Korean is still improving steadily just by taking in so much Korean content on a daily basis. I am ACTIVELY watching/ listening though but I think even subconsciously hearing the language as often as possible tunes your ear to pick up even more of it more easily. Thanks so much for the tip on the Viki site! I have been using youtube for most of my content watching (there is a lot of great content to enjoy while studying) but this site will help A LOT!
If you wanna learn a language, watch something which is basically in the language you wanna learn. I mean if you wanna learn French, watch french shows, not English shows translated in French, because the translation isn't always good and you can't notice every joke or something else specific to the language you wanna learn.
I guess Id do this, if you are: Beginner: target language audio+your language subtitles Intermediate: target language audio+ target language subtitles Advance: target language audio+no subtitles
My personal method of learning French with video media is mostly through short youtube videos. The process is not necessarily the same as what Ikenna mentioned about Tv series as they are generally longer and contain multiple episodes or seasons. Since the youtube videos I watch are shorter, I can watch them multiple times. When I started out as a beginner, I watch the video repeatedly with my native languages (I'm bilingual, so either work). The important part is to be interested in the content to the point where you subconsciously start to mumble or mouth certain lines from the video. Moving forward as an intermediate, I did a similar method of watching the video with French subtitles or no subtitles at all, as Ikenna said in his video. However, again due to the short nature of RUclips videos, I would watch the video once without subs, once with French subs, then one final time with English subs to make sure I understood everything. I then go back to the French sub to check for any words that I didn't know previously and try to figure out the meaning based on context and my knowledge from the English subs. I find this quite effective for me. Hope this can serve some help for people who are trying to learn from RUclips.
3:58 Actually it is possible to learn a language with jus watching TV. For a person that’s already fed up with school studying I know that I’d never be motivated enough to learn a language by studying it. It prolly will take a long ass time but it is possible. I’m Saudi Arabian so my first language is Arabic and considering the fact that Arabic is a pretty difficult and different language it’s kinda hard to learn any other languages. But I’ve always watched RUclips videos and movies n stuff for years and now I can speak English fluently. Now I’m switching into learning French so wish me luck:)
I’m not sure if anyone has already brought this up but CaptionPop is another really good source for language content with double translations. Plus it’s RUclips videos so it’s native speakers speaking in modern language as well as it’s free!
As someone that just finished with kana, I approve this! ありがとございます Just for the newbies, he's saying の which is the sound "no". Which is basically saying no in English. In Japanese no would be iie いいえ although!
I got into kpop and kdramas In January of 2020 - so it’s been over a year now since I’ve been hearing the Korean language like daily. I had no intention in actually learning Korean and honestly I’m still not seriously learning it but I generally pick up things (especially languages) pretty fast. So even I have noticed that I can make full sentences in Korean now, just by watching and listening to Korean ppl speak. (Obviously im not a pro lol) but if I can learn without even tryin that hard - you can definitely do it!! believe me, like if you actually pay attention - you’ll for sure be able to get to atleast a late beginner stage or something! So good luck to everyone trying to learn a language :)
I;m 2 minutes in and I just realized Tous Les Memes by Stromae was playing in the background. Or at least some version of it. This makes me very happy since I haven't heard it in years.
Watch a movie you're very familiar with, in the dub of the language you want to learn, with english subtitles. Like, I know the whole script to The Fast and The Furious off by heart, so what if I watch it in another language? Because I know what's going on and what they should be saying in English, but instead comparing it with the other language. So you're learning like "Ok, so this phrase is said like this in this language", etc. Genius.
I have been watching foreign programmes and films for a long time in many languages for entertainment purposes but after watching this, I will apply the tips that you gave for next time. This is really helpful. Thanks! 😊
It would be great to hear you talk about how much time you think someone should spend learning grammatical rules and stuff. I'm not a fan of it, but obviously it it's place, in moderation.
I do this with ASMR in the language I'm trying to learn. I find a voice I really like and pick a "ramble" style video and just replay it over and over until i no longer need the subtitles to remember what they said. Helps learn "everyday" vocabulary!
Now that I'm thinking of it, the og dragon ball was really linguistically simple. I watched it in English, and never saw words difficult for people learning English.
Watching your videos really motivated me to learn a new language. I picked spanish because the pronunciations of the spanish words is really similar to tagalog words (filipino).
I recommend using RUclips once you've passed the subtitles stage of watching things. Most native content in Spanish doesn't have subtitles so that kind of sucks haha but there are channels where there are subtitles available.

I don’t think you can learn a language from zero just by watching a TV show. I am watching animes for 6 years now and cannot speak Japanese at all. But I do think that TV shows are a good source of learning a language if you are actually learning the language with books or in a school, then you can practice your hearing comprehension and pick up new words. That’s how I learned english, was learning English in school and watched lots of tv shows to improve it but learning a language just with a TV show? Nahh
i learned english that way, i didnt watch TV but i've watched youtube. i also started to read books after a while. i never used subtitles and i talked english by myself everyday. i never had to open a grammar book.
Nah... I don't think so... I learned English and German just by watching tv and nothing else... It wouldn't make sense from a evolutionary perspective to not be able to learn a language just by listening... What if one day you get stranded in a land where you don't know their language? The body would have to have a safe plan for that.... And that is being able to learn a language just by listening.
I tend to go with RUclips videos or Podcasts instead of TV, because most of the TV shows I find not very interesting or a little bit too simple and obviously don't reflect genuine conversation with native speakers. Am I the only one with this problem?
After years of watching anime and playing Japanese game my Japanese level sort of stuck at a stage where I can watch Japanese kid shows without subtitles but can’t make any conversations with a Japanese person.
i actually learned english watching youtube and series in about six months! i decided to try use the same method for learning korean, alongside ttmik books
SUMMARY: 1. Only watch shows that you would watch in English (or your native language) or you would get bored and learning languages should be fun. 2. For the beginning parts of your language learning (3-9 months) use English subtitles, and then remove them and replace it with the language you’re studying. 3. When you learn a new word put it in Anki (flash card program that forces you to remember the word) 4. Some really good websites to use are Viki rakutan (I definitely spelled that wrong but it’s good for Chinese, Japanese, and korean), Fluentu, and Yabla (has a lot more languages) Good luck on your language adventures 😊💕
Great advice re: TV shows. I did a lot of this in the beginning learning Korean. I had the advantage of living in the country so I could easily go out and practice daily. I started out watching mostly half hour shows that I was interested in like restaurant reviews and cooking shows. Luckily, the shows were very formulaic and a lot of repetitive vocabulary with video graphics shown on screen. The visuals of Korean food made it super interesting as well because I knew what to order and ask for when I ate out which was nearly every day. Made learning memorable, delicious, and personally interesting.
I've been planning on learning Spanish and Korean. And so far, I can understand 10-25% of spanish that I read(5% of spanish being spoken to me) and I only know how to say "I am american/korean/japanese" in korean. Oh And I also know the korean word for milk haha, so I have a lot of work to do! Thanks for the vids!

The problem is looking for shows that interests you 😂 Like you really have to dig deep
Well, let's watch Jojo.
i agree. i do find that for the language i’m learning (norwegian) it’s hard to find movies or series that interest me, but i definitely agree
@@em-vo4ml there is this Norwegian show called skam. Check it out. Its really good!

I watch your videos more than actually learning a language 😂
Before the video started, I got the ad for your book.
It was meant to be.
I guess Id do this, if you are:
Beginner: target language audio+your language subtitles
Intermediate: target language audio+ target language subtitles
Advance: target language audio+no subtitles
Cette méthode a l'air effective. Félicitations d'apprendre le français !
Woo just bought your book! And I'm so glad someone else feels TV shows are a great way to absorb language
Please give me tips :)
Good luck! Btw, do you have recommendations of arab youtubers?
Me learning Japanese : "Bu..bu..but... Japanese subtitles???"
Thank you man
I like watching korean and chinese dramas in Viki, but i didnt know it has the "language mode" feature. It's extremely useful
I’m not sure if anyone has already brought this up but CaptionPop is another really good source for language content with double translations. Plus it’s RUclips videos so it’s native speakers speaking in modern language as well as it’s free!
Thanks bruh...Learned about this resource just now.. well I have Spanish specific resources...beta.conjuguemos.com/activities/spanish/verb/1
I have been wondering for about a week if I could get Korean subtitles for K-dramas. Will look around and see what's out there!
OMG I’m so thankful for you telling me about the viki thing. It should be really helpful for my chinese learning journey!!

As someone that just finished with kana, I approve this! ありがとございます
Just for the newbies, he's saying の which is the sound "no".
Hehe.. sums up the video with one word for me

I'm proud 😂❤️
Thanks! 😊
Your vids are so cool and you just naturally seem chill
It would be great to hear you talk about how much time you think someone should spend learning grammatical rules and stuff. I'm not a fan of it, but obviously it it's place, in moderation.
Bro watch "Destinos" it's an educational telenovela from the 90's, it's free on the internet, super entertaining and helpful.
Watching television totally works! Since my dad watched anime I pretty much got into it when I was 5 ;) so now I actually know a lot of Japanese.
I do this with ASMR in the language I'm trying to learn. I find a voice I really like and pick a "ramble" style video and just replay it over and over until i no longer need the subtitles to remember what they said. Helps learn "everyday" vocabulary!
Thanks for the subtitle learn tip! I was watching hwarang and I’m about to rewatch I need that soo much!
NANI😲⚠ I've been taking classes to learn japanese... I've learned more about Japanese from the original dragon ball.

And... Which spanish ytbers do you watch? 👀

Imo, if there is no subtitles for the Spanish channel, just watch it.
Nahh
thats what i said in video, never let tv be the only way to learn, it's a supplement
i learned english that way, i didnt watch TV but i've watched youtube. i also started to read books after a while. i never used subtitles and i talked english by myself everyday. i never had to open a grammar book.
TV shows also help with learning the usage context of a word.

Your channel is so helpful thank you I’m currently learning to fluently speak Spanish & your tips really help me
I tend to go with RUclips videos or Podcasts instead of TV, because most of the TV shows I find not very interesting or a little bit too simple and obviously don't reflect genuine conversation with native speakers. Am I the only one with this problem?

SUMMARY:
1. Only watch shows that you would watch in English (or your native language) or you would get bored and learning languages should be fun.
2. For the beginning parts of your language learning (3-9 months) use English subtitles, and then remove them and replace it with the language you’re studying.
3. When you learn a new word put it in Anki (flash card program that forces you to remember the word)
4. Some really good websites to use are Viki rakutan (I definitely spelled that wrong but it’s good for Chinese, Japanese, and korean), Fluentu, and Yabla (has a lot more languages)
Good luck on your language adventures 😊💕
Thanks!

Congrats on learning Korean!
Dude this deserves much more likes and views than this! Seriously, this vid got me so motivated rn haha
