Maggie was heaven sent, she was a blessing to little Kecil. So Glad they found eachother. So happy he found a new sister and kind of a step mom to love him now, he layed on the momma's back and patted her and that was just precious.

Cant beleive she was 53 wow ....

Maggie was the most wondrous, gentle and loving being. She was surrogate to several orphaned babies, and we could take lessons from her ...RIP Maggie, most beloved of her species.

I fell in love with Maggie when she accepted Kecil as her own. She was the best!! Kecil is thriving even with the odds were stacked against him. Love this!

April 28 2022 was the last time I was at Brookfield Zoo Maggie and Jim the brown bear were still alive. I'm still planning to visit before the weather gets bad.

I'm very sad that Maggie spent her last days raising yet another child. Maggie was very attentive to Kecil. However, everyone knows that raising children is very stressful. Maybe that's what tired her out, and did her in. She was already very old. Maybe she should have spent her last days in retirement, just taking care of herself, and resting. Sad! RIP Maggie. Happy that Kecil is doing well though.
I think the baby provided Maggie with comfort towards the end of her life. She clearly loved the bubba, and had that love returned. I think you are wrong.
Fozzy Bear Oh..I totally agree that Maggie adored the baby, and enjoyed being with the little one. I just meant that perhaps it was a bit too much for her. Maggie had difficulty moving around, but she pushed herself to move, each and every time that the little baby needed her. When human grandparents end up having to raise their grandkids...sure, they love them dearly. But, that doesn't make the job any less tiring or stressful for them. Sometimes it's just too much, and that's my point.
take it from me that when u r old love is the only thing that keeps u going ! Nothing makes u forget more than an innocent little one who needs u and u form a bond with and care for. It gives a meaning I cannot put into words.
i dont think you grasp what is going on here....Maggie was not going to retire on a beach sipping pina coladas all day.....observe that human beings as they age...need a reason to wake up...and maybe our cousins do too

We haven't done an official update lately, but Kecil is doing just fine. He hangs out with his adopted sister Kekasih and gets into mischief like any other young orangutan!
its a wonder this guy doesnt have separation anxiety issues
I am curious. How do orangutan adept with different climate there. Are they fine with it? Naturally they born in warmer climate right
The building they live in is kept very warm year-round.

Yes, Thani interacts with Kecil, just like he did with Kekasih. :-)

Because keepers wanted Kecil to bond with his surrogate mom, Maggie, they minimized their contact with him. That's why Kecil was fed in such a manner until he was old enough to forage alongside Maggie.
