      I fully agree. No matter how many time this gets explained, people just want to argue about it.
      And seriously, who is going to keep their AIO long enough to burn up the pump? It isn't like it has a sliding shoe impeller that will burn up. It's a fixed impeller and volute. Heck, use a marine pump that isn't even connected to the motor with a shaft. That one you can just replace the impeller once it wears down.
      Ok getting off my soap box

      what i really hate is people who keep saying it like they've known it all along, when we know for a fact exactly where they got it.
      I doubt GN ever imagined their experiment would be used this way. They even explained this very well on their original video, which, if you watch and understand in its entirety, doesn't make the assertions that most "barb-watchers" claim. Some of them are even quoting it wrong.

    I was having a huge cpu over heating issue a few weeks back I had taken everything apart put everything back together perfectly but just kept over heating and I finally figured it was my AIO (m22 kraken) so I got a new cooler and that night I watched one of your fix or flop videos tackling the exact same issue I was having you swapped out everything (genuinely scared that you’d replace the cpu or motherboard and it’d work) but nothing worked till you swapped out the cooler and after you looked into the cooler there was gunk in it, the next morning I checked my cooler and sure enough the same issue. Your content is actually amazing and so educational you help out a lot man genuinely.

    Im a custom loop person. The main reason why I never recommended AIO liquid coolers was due to Asetek and their patent shenanigans. But its real cool to see others find another way. That Bequiet AIO is really interesting. Thanks as always greg. Love the the construction paper cutout presentation.

      InWin BR24 and BR36 have the pump on the tubes as well, plus the VRM fan, that I believe Hardware Busters noted that also cooled a little bit the back of a Gpu. Sadly their review units had problems with the "over-block" fan. I wish more manufacturers build with fans over the pump like InWin's BR36 or Arctic's Liquid Freezer II

    • @shaneeslick
      @shaneeslick 2 года назад

      Yeah Asetek are always crying 'You can't do that or We'll Sue' yet they have no problem with copying others designs like they did with the design they made for the Dell/Alienware RTX2080 with the Blower Fan Cooled Rad that looked like a SLI Set up (which Greg had a look at here), Blatant Rip Off of previous design but 🤷‍♂️

      @@Grid21 I think it has something to do with Asetek having the sole right to produce these designs for pumps. So other companies could not copy them, well not directly anyway, which forced companies to include Asetek in the production process of their branded AIO product.

    A great clear video Greg.
    One thing that I do have to mention, Case airflow. You say having the AIO in the front usually will have the system running cooler than having the AIO exhausting out the top. I've tried both ways, and found with my case, that has 3 120mm fans at the front with a mesh front giving good airflow drawing air in, the system runs cooler with the AIO exhausting out the top by about 8-10 deg C. I believe that's due to the good flow off cooler air coming in through the front off the case. My GPU also ran hotter with the AIO in the front off the case. Something to consider.
    My AIO btw is a Cooler Master Masterliquid ML240L.
    Looking forward to the next video Greg.

    • @SirDaffyD
      @SirDaffyD 2 года назад +1

      @@MrLazer44. Blowing through the radiator they say is better, but it'll work the other way.
      I'm gathering the pump is in the middle of the radiator, so putting the hose at the bottom should be OK, but quote me on that, it's not o good idea doing it that way when the pump is in the heat block on the cpu, because air will get in the pump and cause it to fail.
      There's heaps of RUclips videos in the best way to situate your aio radiator. Check them out.

    • @MrLazer44
      @MrLazer44 2 года назад +1

      @@SirDaffyD i know about front mounting for a "regular" aio, but since the pump is in the first 1/3 of the radiator (in the middle of the fan), no air will go in the cpu block because the higherr part in the aio will be the radiator so it should be okay i think.

    Hey Greg. I think another thing that people overlook when complaining about barbs up is this. The Radiator (part where the fins are) has 2 tanks. One at each end. The tank in which the barbs connect, is split in half. It's essentially 2 tanks. Fluid enters one tank, is passed through the fins to the tank at the other end, and then is passed back through the fins to the barb side. People complain that if the barbs are up, there's a chance that air can collect at the top and be pulled through the tubes to the pump. If you realize that the barb side tank is split. If the pump happened to suck in any air, the air that has left the pump (in the cpu block) would accumulate in the tank where the input barb is located. In order for that air to reach the output barb tank (Since they are split) it would have to travel all the way down through the fins and back up again to the other side. Those asetek pumps are pretty decent, but it would have a hard time fighting gravity to push air all the way down through the radiator in order for it to reach the other side of the barb tank.

      I have mine mounted barb side up on the front, all working fine but would the air in the input side of the radiator hinder the water getting into the radiator?

    I had to recently help a friend to upgrade his failing AIO and even as I have experience building PCs we spent some time removing AIO cooler as the thermal paste was hardened and bracket didn't have too much space to do small twist movements to get it loose.

    A question has come to mind: If you have a case that mounts the motherboard horizontally, like many ITX cube cases that can accomodate a 120mm AIO, mounted usually on the front as an intake (Cooler Master Elite 110-130 series, Silverstone Sugo series), how does rotating the radiator/pump affect the air? My current opinion is that, in such a limited use scenario, it won't matter too much, becasue you can only really mount the AIO in one spot and realistically the barbs are going to be either on the left or right of the radiator. This means that the highest point in the system is going to be the edge of the radiator, right? If so, there will be the radiator itself, possibly some space in the topmost channel, and space in both end tanks for air to accumulate...

    I'm not going to disagree with your radiator/barb position, but there is a MAJOR caveat that you should mention. Indeed I trust that Corsair completely filled my AIO when I bought it, but I purchased my AIO in 2015, and it is now 8 years old, and has almost certainly lost some liquid. My Corsair AIO is still running strong despite it's age. My point is, if you want longevity, you want those barbs down or a top mount. Agreed however that tubing may not allow. I feel like a lot of reviewers fail to mention longevity because they have the luxury of building a new machine yearly or better.

    I've got my Cooler Master 240mm AIO mounted to the inside front panel with the barbs up and the 2 fans pushing air through from the outside front panel, but still covered up by the actual front panel cover. Also have a 120mm side panel mounted air intake fan blowing directly onto the dual fan GPU and the PSU. The GPU fans pull air through and exhaust out the rear. The PSU is mounted with the fan down, so it's not sucking warm case air into it before it exhausts out the back. I've also got a 120mm top exhaust fan, a 120mm rear exhaust fan, as well as the GPU exhaust fan, which means that I technically have 3 intake and 3 exhaust fans (PSU fan not counting). CPU is a Ryzen 7 5800X and temperatures hover around 32*C with the lowest so far at 27*C. Haven't seen the CPU temps go above 42*C yet.

    in general positioning rad so the air is away from barbs? example front mount rad barbs towards bottom of case? This is how i plan on installing my aoi given the hoses are long enough. planning on open loop watercoolig after this.

    Thoughts on which side of the radiator fans should be on a front facing AIO?

  • @Alvin853
    @Alvin853 2 года назад +1

    The front mount with barbs up will still get noisy quickly (relatively speaking, probably a couple years, but faster than other mounting positions), because the first air bubbles that form eventually will be trapped at the inlet of the radiator. This is fine for pump lifetime, because no air is being sucked into the pump, but water from the inlet will be dripping into the water inside the radiator almost like filling up a reservoir in an open loop system. Which is why most reservoirs, that have the inlet at the top, have a tube going through the reservoir so the inlet water doesn't drip and cause noise.

    i just recently built my fist pc and bought a msi coreliquid 240r without knowing the pump is in the radiator. as i only have mounting option it s making some weird sounds sometimes.
    One question: if my pump dies, how likely is it that anything spills? Cause i wouldnt be that sad if my aio dies, as im gonna buy a new one with a pump in the block if it does, but i dont want my other components die with it.

    Hi Greg, just want to ask how about for cases like nr200p, if I have an aio like Nzxt X53 and I installed it on the side of the case, is this better than putting it in the bottom? Or is it same same?

    So thorough but clear, thanks for this video! I've always used air but this is all super helpful to know. Can't wait to see Linus' new labs buy a bunch of AIOs and measure the amount of liquid in each 😉

    I'm using Be Quiet! Pure Loop 240MM on the front of my H510. So far it's working flawlessly but it just the 2nd year of it. Hope it can last longer. Idle temp that I usually get are around 35-45°c on my 11th Gen i5. Great video!

    Thank you, Greg! This is a good, clear summary of the Gamers Nexus content as well as JaysTwoCents where, he too, sought to clarify the issue due to people not really paying attention to the Gamers Nexus content. What I've found is that many, if not most of the AIO manufacturers seem to assume or desire you to mount the AIO in the top of the case if you go by their documentation and the pictures it contains. I have also found, as you mention, most AIOs have 400mm hoses. Depending on the case and size of the GPU, it may be impossible to position the radiator with the barbs down. I prefer to position the radiator in the front with barbs up. I have positioned it in the top on occasion and have set the fans to both intake or exhaust at different times. I saw a video from Paul's Hardware where he tested this and created high positive pressure by using all intake fans and only on rear exhaust and it actually reduced the temps. Thanks again!

    I have a CoolerMaste ML360 sub zero, it have the pump between the radiator and the header, I placed the pump than the header (like in the third fan mount of the front panel), and the radiator in the top, that's right? (Btw I hear sometimes like bubbles in the pump but the AiO doesn't have even a year with me)

  • @RyukkaV

    i had the pump on cpu block and put the radiator on top of the case, but my aio started to bubble/rattling sound when i open games, is it possible because of the cpu block placement because i put the cpu block facing down so the tube came from under the cpu block, i really appreciate any helps😢
