    Hi Jack, personally I am not so keen on Italki these days as they seem to keep moving goalposts and updating the site without letting teachers know in advance but it is handy to keep a profile live. For anyone starting out/unqualified I would suggest Cambly. The money is bad (by comparison) but you work when you want and get paid out weekly via paypal. I use it to fill my dead times, better poor money than no money!
    Incidentally Jack's course is a worthwhile investment.

    Hi. Great video. I teach for SayABC. I think it's a great company for starting out. I am brand new to teaching online, so it's helped me see how an effective lesson plan progresses. You have 9 lessons in a unit with the same students over 4 1/2 weeks. I took an online 150-hr TEFL/TESOL course but still don't feel confident about planning lessons for teaching my own students independently. It would be helpful to see how the initial lessons go and how they're structured.

    • @EnglishwithBob1
      @EnglishwithBob1 5 лет назад +2

      Remember to find out what your students need and then design the course around them. Once you have a needs analysis you can start to break it down into smaller parts and to lessons and then build the lessons. To start with you could adapt lessons from a course book if you are not sure and then as you get more confident you can start to produce your own materials. As I am sure Jack will tell you, once you have a niche you can start reusing materials again and again so it becomes more cost effective.
      Usually the first lesson is getting to know you, finding about them and them finding about you.
      Try to give them a take away so they will remember you and show/tell them how their course will develop.

    Hi! Thanks for this video it was really helpful. I am a primary school teacher and have a PGCE, but am looking to get out of the classroom and into something different. Although I am a trained teacher, I feel teaching English to adults is very different and I have a lot to learn! I would like to know, what inital assessment do you give the student so that you can pitch the lessons accordingly? Do you just make up you own assessments or is there a particular book or website I can go to? There is so much to potentially teach ( grammar, vocab, pronunciation, reading, writing, speaking, listening etc) how do you know where to start? When I'm teaching children I usually assess them first to find out what they already know, but I can't find anything on the web or in the library regarding this part of ESL teaching. I am hoping to gain a CELTA and do some voluntary work before I take the plunge into this career, but if I can get enough information I might feel more confident to start earlier.

      englishwithbob thanks for your reply, it sounds good, but I don't want to have to pay for a subscription. I thought there would be a book I could buy or criteria check list/ ruberic to follow as a guide. I will need to use something to measure the students progress. I know I will get to grips with their language proficiency just by teaching them, but being new to this I would like a guide. For example, if they can do this and this and this they are working at an intermediate level and they need to work on this, this and this. Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree. I'll figure it out.
