Ok so, think there are some Easter egg's to this video with all the sides: -Virgil watching Bela Lugosi as Count Dracula: a callback to his Halloween vampire look. Curious if because Lugosi was very charming and how vampires often have been symbolic of last, and Virgil being scared, relates to his fear of thw relationship with Nico maybe? Think I am reading too much into this. -Logan reading Sherlock Holmes (thank you @SeerOfTime from your comment); of course a reference. But also, being in a pumpkin patch reference to the second episode of OTGW at Pottsfield. But also... pumpkins are orange... Logan looks around surrounded by orange pumpkins... orange boi is approaching, maybe consuming Logan. -Remus laying down waiting to be hit by a train, a reference to the train that leads Wirt and Greggory to being in The Unknown. Also how Renus asked C.Thomas "When are you going to jump out of a moving car" maybe, Remus finding ways to live that dream. Maybe a sexual reference to 'run me over' kind of thing? -Roman with the red cape, just like Wirt maybe? Janhs sings "If dreams can't come true, then why not pretend" at that moment, as Roman wraps the cape around him like a hug. Roman wanting to be the hero he always thought he was, a idea he feels he either isn't or has been pretending to be. - I feel like Janus and Patton being in the woods together portrays them both as Wirt and Greggory. One being more pessimistic and the other optimistic. Also them both being in the woods together. I feel like also this might be their place they go to to chat, as Janus said they have been meeting up and talking. So this is their place they go to to get to know one another more. -Janus smiling as Patton says maybe it is all ok, and Janus turning to say "yes, maybe" I think is him lying. Similar to how Janus said "yes, everything is just, fine" at the end of WTIT. But I think I could see this as Janus, yes, playing with Patton slightly as he seems to want Orange Boi to come, but also that sense of lying to Patton as he still admires the optimistism and wants Patton to still have that. (Would have loved it of Patton had a rock, would have been just amazing. But still, this is a really perfect video).
I love how when Patton says ‘maybe things will be okay’ Janus smiles like he knows Patton has fallen for the lie of comfort too and he’s happy Patton gets this moment of calm
I wouldn't call it a lie though cause Patton's being hopeful. A lie would be saying there is no chance for things to get better. Or worse. Janus would basically be someone who realizes that yeah.. hope for better but expect the worst. Don't fool yourself into thinking it'll go only one way.
Hope, the lie we hold close to our hearts to fight on against all odds because we can't bare to believe that things may be bad, so we keep telling ourselves "It just might be okay. Isn't that enough reason to fight?" And sometimes... sometimes that is all it takes to truely become free to fight again.
Hope and dread are both not lies, as it's random in the world things will get better or worse, and I think janis deep down knows this but dosent want to full comit to knowing that becuase he to like everyone else doesn't wanna let Thomas down, janis want Thomas to feel as much of control of himself as possible with a few lies cuzz that's what Thomas needs janis is doing this for Thomas and by extention everyone else Logan patten Virgil even Roman
I totally forgot that these characters are really just Thomas in different outfits... he just looks so different in each of them that I believed they were completely separate people
They are Morality and Deceit, two sides of the same coin, and Patton has no harsh feeling against Janus, so it makes sense. I love this interactions more mundane between the Sides.
I cannot believe i was not told about this. This actually fits Janus so well. It really shows how sure, Janus is Deceit, so he lies a lot, but lying isn't always a bad thing- that he uses those same lies to comfort Thomas. That just for a little while lying can be ok if you need it. It really shows that Janus isn't really "Deceit," he's closer to "Selfishness" or an instinct for self-preservation. That all he really wants is for Thomas to be ok.
I think the name 'Dark Sides' should be changed to something else. After all, you're right. They aren't bad people, because they also want to help Thomas. Janus and Remus. And the others that haven't been introduced.
i once saw someone make a graph like thing and they first had janus as “wants” but later when thomas developed feelings and views in emotions and things, he changed to “selfishness”

Dark can be the anti-hero, it's the attitude of the pessimist, or even the voice of reason in a dystopian story. It's Virgil, when you think of the things he likes such as horror movies and Halloween, or his sarcasm. Janus' snark and cynicism. Remus', well, everything. I like the way the sides' videos are developing, where it is becoming more clear that "dark" doesn't mean bad, just like "light" doesn't equal good. There is more to it than that. I like that nuance.
@@Justve1n I agree with your opinion :) looking back the series, it was Roman who gave them the name of ''darksides'' when Virgil just called them ''the others'' so I guess it could be only how Roman sees them, especially how distressing Remus makes them. Darksides is definitely not an accurate term, maybe the season finale sees acceptance of them and they are no longer going to be defined as ''darksides'' who knows, either way im excited to see it!

I love how every got a song and how each song shows more of their personality. Roman - Dramatic but emotion as any actor/dreamer Patton - Cheery and fun, just like Patton Logan - straight to the point, but it also shows he has a "fun" side and that he cares. Also attempts to rap at some times. Virgil - a bit dull, but also shows that he does enjoy the sides company and thats how he bonds with them. Remus - ... do I have to explain? (music is a bit chaotic and also dramatic just like Roman since they're brothers.) And now Janus - just like his personality, his song is smooth and soft. Leading you to a comforting state of mind. Patton and Janus are two sides of nostalgia. Patton is giddy and happy. He remembers with such warmth and excitement at what was. Janus is melancholy and sad. Knowing they can’t get their days back, never to change it, and doom to one day forget them and lie about what we do remember for the sake of happiness. Both are fond when they talk, but in different ways.
I just realized! All the characters sing in different ways! Patton sings like a proud dad, Roman sounds like a Disney prince, Remus is well...Remus! Logan is a angel, Virgil sounds like a rebel, and Janus sounds like a majestic snake! That's so cool!!💛💛💛
And with this, Janus has become my favorite side. When he was introduced I really just thought of him as an antagonist. But I couldn't have been more wrong. It is very clear now that Janus deeply cares about Thomas and wants the best for him. With the line "He needs it, even for just a little while." It became so clear how much Janus cares about Thomas's happiness. Possibly more than any other side. Also, the nostalgia vibes from this song are unreal! I love how Thomas can change the way he speaks and sings to portray each character as a different entity. So talented!

Janus finally sang! Also the sides wearing normal clothes (except for the darksides) that you can TELL they would wear any other day. Finally people like me whom adores the darksides can be happy at this day of the year (your voice is gorgeus btw)
As always, absolutely adore the different outfits on everyone! All the cozy sweaters, Roman and Janus' fancy coats, and even the small details like Patton having a sucker... Not to mention your voice was amazing for the song! It was like hearing the autumnal version of "Once Upon a December"!
For the first time, I really felt for Janus. He knows the truth, some truth, but due to his nature as deceit, he can't reveal it. He just seems so lonely. It even seems like Patton wants to make him believe that it will be okay, but it's obvious that Janus can't fully believe. Almost a reversal of their roles.
This is such a sweet video. My grandmother had a stroke two days ago and is now in hospice with irreversible brain damage. She may never speak coherently again. This video came just in time to calm me down. Patton saying "Maybe things really are going to be okay" is definitely what I needed to hear.

Oh, this was so so good!! Also it’s a testament to Thomas’s acting abilities that I knew it was Patton talking right from the beginning…and Janus singing!! My boy!! I loved all the casual fall looks, especially Patton wearing his “Trying Too Hard” sweater!
Exactly - as soon as his voice came on, I knew it was Patton over Thomas or any of the Sides, even when Thomas was the one who appeared on screen first, and that shows just how talented Thomas is

I love it. I just... I just love it. It gave me this vibe that, although the others aren't aware of what Patton and Janus are doing, they are still somewhat affected by the mood and they all contribute to how character Thomas feels about things. It feels like this little insight into the background of the show.
I really love this song. It tells you that Janus does kind of have a softer side than his deceitful self. This is one the most beautiful songs for the fall. Keep doing you, Thomas! ❤😊

Genuinely this is one of my favorite Sanders Sides videos. The way it makes me feel almost matches the way Over the Garden Wall itself makes me feel; it's like a peaceful dream, equal parts calming and unsettling.

I have replayed over that final scene where the camera pans up and away from the 2 figures facing away in the woods like 5 times now. Something about that moment just catches the spirit of Autumn in such a somberly sweet way~
A few years back I had stopped watching Sander Side videos but the hyperfixation has finally come back and this was a brilliant way to rejoin the fandom! I remember Janus quickly becoming my favourite shortly after he was introduced and also become my first ever comfort character, but to see him finally have a song has me way more excited than I probably should be at like 2 in the morning. This song is so brilliant, I've always loved Over the Garden Wall ever since it came out and I have no words to describe how I feel about being back in the Sander Sides fandom other than thank you Thomas for being your amazing self, even after all these years.
This was so gorgeous! The coloring, the warm cozy feeling, the hint that something may be lurking underneath, and the singing tying it all together. Perfect! Happy Halloween everyone reading this!
Oh my gosh I adore this! I am so giddy over this, the song fits so well for Janus. It feels so new and beautiful, yet the nostalgia from the show mixed with the gorgeous voice feels warm and inviting, yet still, ironically, unknown. Patton and Janus are my favorite sides so seeing them talking at all also makes me so happy, their chemistry and characters work so well put against each other!!
Man being 19 now but being so young when I started watching explains my love for music dude, Thomas has made such a beautiful universe in his own right man I’m just glad I got to be apart of it as just a listener
YO when i first heard Into the Unknown my first thought was “Janus would sing this tbh” all the references to lies and gold and the entire song in general seemed like his cup of tea. So this is LITERALLY PERFECT AAAH Also YAY Jan and Pat are vibing. I have waited so long for this blessed day :D
It feels like a testament to _something_ how obviously 1:44 is Logan, to the point where I can imagine I would have been able to instantly tell even without the book, despite Logan and Patton pretty much looking alike on paper
That something is Thomas's pure talent and skill as an actor and YES. Not only do the characters all have distinctive ways they talk (not just vocabulary but cadences, the way Virgil is lower and raspier while Roman and Janus are silk smooth but Roman's is indeed Princely and emotive while Janus has a "head voice" that is more nasal, and etc etc), but they all have distinctive body and facial language too! Patton is more open and relaxed in his postures and expression (except when he's trying hide nerves with false cheer), while Logan has more rigidly "proper" upright posture and keeps his face much more reserved. In short, Patton FEELS like a more emotional person just from looking at him, while Logan feels stiffer and more controlled (except when losing his temper, of course, but even that becomes firm and forceful). Janus is i think somewhere between Logan and Roman in posture - he often holds himself like a Victorian gentleman who had to pass Posture Classes in finishing school, but unlike Logan the control just... feels different. Like his every movement is a Performance. (Which is where the Roman comparison comes in - Roman's movements are dramatic and full of gesticulation and the emotive motions you'd expect from a theatrical actor, and Janus does sorta that but more reserved or slinky). He just. Absolutely inhabits these characters when playing them. You can almost always tell within seconds by voice, facial expression, or body language, and it's wonderful 💙❤💛💚💜🧡💖

Logan - straight to the point, but it also shows he has a "fun" side and that he cares. Also attempts to rap at some times.
Virgil - a bit dull, but also shows that he does enjoy the sides company and thats how he bonds with them.
Remus - ... do I have to explain? (music is a bit chaotic and also dramatic just like Roman since they're brothers.)
And now Janus - just like his personality, his song is smooth and soft. Leading you to a comforting state of mind. Whatever he does with that is up to him. He could lie for all you know or in this case, it shows his "soft" side.

And with this, Janus has become my favorite side. When he was introduced I really just thought of him as an antagonist. But I couldn't have been more wrong. It is very clear now that Janus deeply cares about Thomas and wants the best for him. With the line "He needs it, even for just a little while." It became so clear how much Janus cares about Thomas's happiness. Possibly more than any other side.
Also, the nostalgia vibes from this song are unreal! I love how Thomas can change the way he speaks and sings to portray each character as a different entity. So talented!

For the first time, I really felt for Janus. He knows the truth, some truth, but due to his nature as deceit, he can't reveal it. He just seems so lonely. It even seems like Patton wants to make him believe that it will be okay, but it's obvious that Janus can't fully believe. Almost a reversal of their roles.
This is such a sweet video. My grandmother had a stroke two days ago and is now in hospice with irreversible brain damage. She may never speak coherently again. This video came just in time to calm me down. Patton saying "Maybe things really are going to be okay" is definitely what I needed to hear.

I love it. I just... I just love it. It gave me this vibe that, although the others aren't aware of what Patton and Janus are doing, they are still somewhat affected by the mood and they all contribute to how character Thomas feels about things. It feels like this little insight into the background of the show.

I remember Janus quickly becoming my favourite shortly after he was introduced and also become my first ever comfort character, but to see him finally have a song has me way more excited than I probably should be at like 2 in the morning.

Oh my gosh I adore this! I am so giddy over this, the song fits so well for Janus. It feels so new and beautiful, yet the nostalgia from the show mixed with the gorgeous voice feels warm and inviting, yet still, ironically, unknown. Patton and Janus are my favorite sides so seeing them talking at all also makes me so happy, their chemistry and characters work so well put against each other!!

It feels like a testament to _something_ how obviously 1:44 is Logan, to the point where I can imagine I would have been able to instantly tell even without the book, despite Logan and Patton pretty much looking alike on paper
That something is Thomas's pure talent and skill as an actor and YES.
Not only do the characters all have distinctive ways they talk (not just vocabulary but cadences, the way Virgil is lower and raspier while Roman and Janus are silk smooth but Roman's is indeed Princely and emotive while Janus has a "head voice" that is more nasal, and etc etc), but they all have distinctive body and facial language too!
Patton is more open and relaxed in his postures and expression (except when he's trying hide nerves with false cheer), while Logan has more rigidly "proper" upright posture and keeps his face much more reserved. In short, Patton FEELS like a more emotional person just from looking at him, while Logan feels stiffer and more controlled (except when losing his temper, of course, but even that becomes firm and forceful).
Janus is i think somewhere between Logan and Roman in posture - he often holds himself like a Victorian gentleman who had to pass Posture Classes in finishing school, but unlike Logan the control just... feels different. Like his every movement is a Performance. (Which is where the Roman comparison comes in - Roman's movements are dramatic and full of gesticulation and the emotive motions you'd expect from a theatrical actor, and Janus does sorta that but more reserved or slinky).
He just. Absolutely inhabits these characters when playing them. You can almost always tell within seconds by voice, facial expression, or body language, and it's wonderful 💙❤💛💚💜🧡💖
