Normally in Bonsai bending branches is accomplished by carefully wiring the branches to the desired shape. These "Bonsai gadgets" claim to bend branches without the need to wire. I had to try them out!
These branch benders did do what they are advertised to do. I used these on the trunks of four small trees. The trunk is something that can be hard to wire since you cannot anchor the wire on a second branch. The devices put a noticeable bend in the small trunk of the trees. They did leave some scarring that will likely take quite some time to become unnoticeable. For that reason, it seems like these will work best for young trees that are still in development.

Measuring the marks on the trunks is an ineffective way of using these branch benders. Raffia is usually applied to the trunks and branches to protect the bark and cambium from damage and to help heal from breakage. Also these can’t just be applied and taken off a a month or so later. Different trees are more resilient and flex back, so one has to wait until the cells repair the micro cracks and build new wood. Some trees like pines and hemlocks are notorious for needing retiring and rebending for a number of years before they set.

I think you're the 1st person in all history to actually use one of these, even though everyone owns one. lol. Mine is literally on the floor by my feet now, unused. I had it out recently to see if it could weirdly help straighten a branch.
Interesting to see the results though. That is the first time I've seen what it can actually do. I also think you're right about young trees being best for it
lol Impulse purchase! I was skeptical at first but all four of these were very straight to begin with. It will be interesting to see how it grows in to that bend.
I wonder if raffia would help prevent the damage. I've never used raffia but was really curious about these benders!
