Why Colleges Like Columbia, UCLA And Harvard Refused Demands To Divest From Israel

- Student protests against the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict have brought battalions of police in riot gear to college campuses, enraged some billionaire donors, and led to canceled graduation ceremonies.
One constant refrain at these protests is the call for college endowment funds to divest from Israel and the many American companies that do business there. Tech companies such as Google and Amazon and defense contractors such as Boeing and Lockheed are on that list.
"These endowments are famously opaque," said Alison Taylor, clinical associate professor at New York University's Stern School of Business. "So there is very often not any information publicly available about what is happening to these funds. And that is, in fact, one of the student demands as well."
Putting divestment into practice, though, is a tall order. Some universities, such as the University of California, Berkeley, agreed to review their investments. However, many universities have ignored the calls to divest from Israel or companies that do business there.
"Universities are reluctant to divest on any issue because it might lower the returns on their endowment, which would affect their ability to serve the needs of future students," said Witold Henisz, professor of management at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. "If we introduce greater risk or lower returns in the endowment, there'll be less funds available to cover ... tuition assistance, to cover the running costs of the university for students who may not even be born yet."
Watch the video above to learn more about how divesting from Israel and companies who do business there would actually work, and how it would affect the tens of billions of dollars at stake in college endowment funds.

The Professor of Management at The Wharton School, Witold Henisz, conveniently failed to mention that the endowments for these elite universities also and primarily pay for their salaries and overhead,. Therefore, a reduction in endowment investment in industries of war can easily effect their pocketbook, so why would they change this system that benefits them so well?

It’s not as if any institution in our modern world have any sense of integrity, responsibility or morality.
It just comes down to money and power. These schools are beholden to their biggest donors and supporters. Most of those people care minimally about this issue, but some of them blindly support Israel. Because these people are powerful and care deeply, the school will side with them over current students who are much less influential and powerful.
The people running things just want to keep their jobs and those jobs are more dependent on raising a 100 million a quarter to the 10 billion endowment than about anything else.
Some people in charge might even sympathize, but they care about the Palestinians as much they care about starving African children or the children stitching clothing in Bangladesh.

Awesome video, Gracias,! I think the market is over-heated. And I am concerned that people are focusing less on fundamentals and just chanting the mantra of dollar cost averaging and driving the market higher without considering fundamentals. It is a catch-22 for me. I mean I like crypto prices going higher but I also hate buying over-priced market and ETFs. Personally, I have stopped buying growth ETFs- they are ridiculously over-valued. Dividend crypto and ETFs are a little better but they are still over-valued. There is some hope with small and mid caps. I am not sure they are undervalued but at least they are less over-valued..This pattern offers a valuable insight for strategic planning. Despite these trends, i have delve deeply into active trading and managed to grow a nest egg of around 100k to a decent 432k in the space of a few months... Exactly why students claims about their tuition money being used to fund genocide is extremely wrong. Even if their claims of genocide is even correct, it's genocide that's funding their education, not the other way around. By not wanting endowment money to be linked to their education, students should instead ask for funding for their education to be cut or tuition to be raised so that endowment money isn't needed.
If students can remain true to their position after divesting and the subsequent spike in tuition, then more power to them. If they didn't consider that as one of the consequences, then only goes to show these students are all talks until situations become inconvenient for them.
@FlyingKoreanMinja it's ironic cuz the same student bodies that protested against tuition increases months prior are now actively pushing for something that will garuntee increases to their tuition.
Didn't these schools literally just record their most profitable year again or something?

We should allow the alumnis to decide to contribute or not. Not the future students that have not graduated.
Those students create value for their university and also become alumni too, might be strategic to listen to them. Hell there are kindegartens that let the children play a role in their education. Funny how you don’t mention the Israeli casualties as a result of Hamas. Or that Hamas has declared genocide against Israel.
This is urban warfare. Civilians unfortunately will get in the crossfire. In this case, especially when Hamas doesn’t let people evacuate. When they install missiles in civilian areas.

@@brianpatrickjames how would you go about this situation if you were the Prime Minister of Israel back in October?
War. Especially in the name of make believe sky wizards is awful. Both sides need to stop. Then kids can protest about real issues here instead.
I studied the South African Apartheid in grad school and wrote a research paper about it. My analysis was that the divestment campaign had little to no effects on the end of the apartheid. The real reason was the collapse of the USSR, which led to the US no longer needing an anti-communist ally in Africa.
If Palestinians wanted to replicate a similar result, they should either prove to the US that they are a better ally than Israel, or they need to defeat the Iranian theocracy and other US adversaries in the Middle East.
They could also just not say they will destroy Israel at any chance they get. Divesting from Israel would just embolden Hamas/ Palestine to attack again. And I don’t even support Israel.
That’s essentially it. Apartheid South Africa was propped up because of how anti communist the government was which made them a good regional bulwark ally during the Cold War. The students these days truly have little to no understanding about how much of an impact the Cold War had on the world as a whole and so they push for ideas that don’t really work because their historical examples come from a context that no longer exists in the modern day.
Whose purposes? Whose goals? Hamas?
Or about IDF killers?let me think
Maybe because they dont want to succumb to the demands of a bunch of spoiled brats

The students have a right to ask for divestment and any institution with a positive social mission should not be making profits off murder and war..
Then the students should at least suggest as to where they want the Uni to divest to.

5:42 that's exactly the problem. S.A. had Nelson Mandela as an alternative lined up who propagated non violence and a peaceful transition, whom do the Palestinians bring to the table? Hamas and a pledge of genocide.
Ask yourself how exactly did Hamas come to the fore front of the Palestinians struggle for independence. They only came in to existence in the 1980s so how exactly did that happen? The Israeli state itself came in existence through violent means, so why hold the Palestinians to a different standards?
Also Mandela wasnt as peaceful as he was portrayed. That was just the PR given to him after he won.

That is a rather dumb argument because the consequences of divestment are precisely the points. When MLK led the public bus boycott in Alabama, it hurt the salaries of the drivers, the customers who had to find alternative transportation and the Bus Company. This in turn led to major changes being made and people started to actually listen to the protesters.
