  • Larry Bird would average 40 ppg 13 rpg and 12 apg with today's rules I truly and realistically believe that...It's just nutts to me how people act like Bird wasn't the best small forward ever by far!!! Bird is underrated believe it or not...he was an innovator at the position in many ways but as the years go by people tend to forget or haven't done they're homework and just talk gibberish like Bird wouldn't average 35 pts 13 reb and 11 ast per game (year in year out) with these rules today come on....STOP IT! There are only a hand full of players today that would persevere under those old stressful conditions back when it was more for the love of the game than "The Bag" My Dudes Bird is a Basketball God of the highest power and don't you forget it!

    Everyone talks about his MVP years and rightfully so, but for me, the true measure of Bird's greatness is this: in his last season, a 35-year-old Bird, with two reconstructed Achilles tendons and a back that required hospitalization and traction between games, averaged 20.2 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 6.8 assists and shot 47.8% from two, .40.6% from three, and 92.6% from the line in a league in which players actually played defense.

      people that say that also don't understand that there is more to athleticism than jumping high and running fast. Hand Eye coordination for example is an "athletic" trait and Bobby Knight is on record that Larry Bird had probably the best Hand Eye coordination of all time. Balance is an athletic trait, flexibility, quickness, reflexes. Bird was more of an athlete than people give him credit for.

    • @KenD67
      @KenD67 4 года назад +4

      Bird says he's unathletic, but he's also humble as anyone I've seen, AFTER his career ended. "Athletic" is often defined as being quick/fast, jumping high, etc....but your point is a good one...Bird had what he needed there to play HIS game. He wasn't a great straight-up defender because of his lack of foot speed -- I'd see James Worthy dart right by him for a reverse dunk more than once, but Worthy was particularly agile and quick for someone 6'9" where Bird wasn't. But Bird was the far better PLAYER with a toolbox the size of the state of Indiana. What he lacked in "explosiveness" I guess is the best desciptor, he far more than made up for with his brain. How many ankles did he break, faking defenders out? And I LOVED absolutely LOVED it when he was wide-effin'-open with the ball. He'd start to shoot, re-cock, grin, then in NO hurry he'd ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS sink it. ALWAYS!!!!

    I've been watching the NBA since the early 70's and Larry Bird was the best I ever saw. As great as Dr. J and McAdoo and Cowens and Havilcek and Maravich were in the 70's, Bird was better. As good as Magic and Kareem and this sixers and the bad boys were in the 80's, Bird was better. The 90's is all Jordan with no real competition for him. Bird was someone who you wanted to go see play against the highest competition because win or loose, it was going to be a GREAT game. Bird rose the competition level against all the greats in the 80's and beat them. He is, in my opinion, the best all around player of all time.

      Bird was one of the best of all time but without any doubt the best small forward of all time. Bird's shooting & IQ was unparalleled still today. 90% from the free throw line (career), an assassin, a finisher, a tactician, and just light it up all over the floor. Tough as nails, solid rebounded, & a great passer. Most impressive, Bird would tell you where he was going to shoot it from, but there wasn't a damn thing you can do about it. If you look up the word "NBA Small Forward", Larry Bird's picture & career highlights would define that position.

    I just dont think youngsters today, who never had the opportunity to watch Larry Bird live, year in and year out, doing the things he did, at a time when the game was much more physical, and the competition much tougher, can truly appreciate just how good he was thru clips and highlights. Oldsters like myself who were lucky enough to live thru the Golden Age of basketball (which I do believe the 80's & 90's were), know, without a doubt, he is absolutely one of the greats, and hands down, a better player than Lebron ever will be.

      This is what I was thinking about for a while. What if I were in the NBA and having to guard him, knowing what I know about him? I'd try to get into HIS head by being overly nice and silly/funny...like Bird comes up all trash-talking "I'ma shoot it in yer face from the wing for a 3," I'd be like, "Okay Larry...rim or no rim, though? Ya gotta gimme more INFO here..." Kill him with kindness and respect. That might be the ONLY way to get into LARRY'S head -- react the opposite way of everyone else. Then whenever I'd get lucky and make some play on HIM, just say something like, "Wow, will wonders never cease?" or "Now, I got something to tell my grandkids I don't have yet."
      I'd just take his jawing at me and even add do it...he says, "You don't belong in this league, rookie!" I'd come back with something like, "I didn't in college, either, that's why they kicked me out after a few years" or "SSSSHHH, PLEASE don't tell my GM; I NEED THE JOB!"
      If I could get him laughing at me FOR REAL, I think that might be the only way to get him off his game, frankly, if at all.

Better shooter, better rebounder, better passer. As good of a defender too as Bird was a really good defender especially team defender and getting in passing lanes, double teams, etc. Bird one of the highest basketball IQs of all time and right there with guys like Jordan and Russell as far as the "obsession of winning" goes. Also obviously more clutch than Lebron but thats not some tiebreaker like Steven A talks about the "last two minutes". Bird is by far the superior player. His game for the most part was "clean", rarely carrying the ball, no palming or walking or exra steps to make the shots. Rarely did he use his off hand to push the defender out of his way, a common tacket used by some "greats". He played within the rules.In a era were the game was still defensive minded. Second the year Pippen came into the league he was not a contributed bruh he was the 7th or 8th man off the bench for the season and the playoffs. Horrace Grant was not even ready to start yet. He also came off the bench. Pippen was drafted in 87 did not start until 89 and was not an all-star until 91. The year the Bulls finally won a chip. The year Jordan got out the first round Pippen rookie year Pippen was not even the 6th man dude. Jordan won MVP The scoring Title and DPOY all in the same season. So it was a peak level Jordan that got his team out of the first round finally. Pippen never won a DPOY award NEVER. So what season was he ever the best defender in the league ? Yes Pippen contributed later into his career but he had to be groomed and developed into a all-star with the help of Jordan. Horace Grant also had to be developed with the help of Jordan. Bird had 3 allstars and 4 HOFers on his team from the time Jordan was drafted. So let's not act like Jordan was ever expected to beat that champion level veteran team his his first few years in the league on his own. Your argument is mute. Jordan's team never missed the playoffs that's all that matters. You talking about making the playoffs everybody knows Birds accomplishments in the league. are u trying to make the statement that Bird's accomplishments in the game of basketball are greater then Michael Jeffery Jordan. I know your not trying to push that agenda.

I can only guess that they all learned REAL fast, in practices, to expect or at least be ready for a pass from Bird at any time at any place under all circumstances, period. In his senior season he takes that horrible college team undefeated into the championship game losing only to Magic Johnson and a Michigan team loaded with future pro talent.

    Who do you wan t to have the basketball in the last 2 mins? Or the last quarter? No one else, the answer is simple. In his prime, no one, no double team(Jordan n Pippen) could stop him. He would absolutely score at will in today's NBA. Its's not even close. EVERYONE feared him, not respected, feared.

    Larry Bird is my favorite basketball player of all time, he was at the top in all the needed skills the only thing you can criticize is physicality. He could dunk if he wanted to but by no means at MJ's level, he could dribble well but not as the point guard. Larry wasn't perfect but he came close.

    • @KenD67
      @KenD67 4 года назад +2

      a made dunk is worth 2 points no matter how it "looks." MJ though...he could almost dunk taking off at the 3-pt line. I've been waiting for a 3-point dunk ever since...but yeah I'd take Larry in his prime over Jordan in his. Only reason I'd probably take rookie Jordan over rookie Larry is longevity, but then again you don't know that stuff yet when they ARE rookies. Larry came in damaged - had screws in his hand or something, and was still sinking shots in a workout...didn't miss from what I recall from Red Auerbach. So, I might've wondered about Larry's career durability. Jordan, OTOH, I'd worry about his back and how well it stands the test of time with having to _land_ after all these flying leaps, but he held up well.

    Thanks a million for posting. Great job!👍 To this day the folks have know idea how good Bird was... Most think it's all hyperbole... And the more time that passes they think the stories become more exaggerated; but not in the case of Bird -- much of it is documented -- thankfully.
    If you were to write a screenplay over Bird and submit it to Hollywood? They would think you are completely off your nut and full of shit --nobody would buy it! That's how unbelievable Bird was. I think Bird is the GOAT, but that's debatable. What's not debatable?! He's the most unique talent the NBA has ever seen. As Magic said, "there will never be another Larry Bird."

      What most ppl don't know is that Jordan was a little "scared" of a small number of players, and very unlikely ones, at that. Mitch Kupchak was one...a career Journeyman player? But Bird didn't care; he'd just trash-talk them into the "torture chamber" as he once told a teammate, while the opposing player was standing right there, hearing it all....

    I'd found Steven A. Smith kind of annoying over the years and felt he'd drag race into almost anything and everything...but the last few years, once I started LISTENING to what the man actually SAYS, some of what he'll say might be uncomfortable to hear, and yes, sometimes I still feel he goes a bit overboard on "race" at times, but I've always found him to be a bright guy...but then part of it is it was almost always Skip Bayless counter-arguing, so Skip probably makes Steven sound even smarter lol....but once you listen, Steven is also insightful and sometimes on things he will make you think a bit. It took time, but he grew on me and these days, I ALWAYS listen to what the man says. I may not agree with him, but he almost always puts forth a legit point or concept to chew on and often seems to come from a point of view I hadn't really considered before, and that's what makes him an asset, IMO.
    When he speaks of Larry Bird, yeah, he DOES drag "race" into it, but that's because "race" WAS at the forefront of everyone's mind when Bird entered the league as a rookie. He just so happened to be both white AND better than anyone else. Bird changed the way people look at "white guys" playing basketball and proved that, yes, a white guy can play the game just as well (and, in Bird's case, better than) any black player, especially before Jordan came along with his once-in-a-lifetime talent, black, white, green, orange, red, checkered...whatever "color" you wanna put on someone. Jordan's by far the superior athlete, but then again, "athleticism" never was part of Larry's game, either.
    I think Steven A. Smith sums it up quite well with the line that's edited in this video a number of times:
    Larry Bird was the TRUTH!

    Early on it's hard to say who was better Bird vs Jordan. Bird was the ultimate team player and Mr. Clutch but had a much better team around him and Jordan was simply unstoppable with no team. It's interesting to think what kind of numbers and careers these guys would have had had the players switched teams. I believe Bird would have had similar numbers, maybe more points and fewer assists and made the Bulls a little better as a team whereas Jordans points on average probably would have taken a dip but may have had more assists and the Celtics may have not been as good.
