You can eat meatballs anywhere in Sweden. A majority of ordinary Swedish lunch restaurants serve it. So sorry you had such a stressfull time! Swedes won't initiate conversation with strangers as that might be intrusive but if you ask someone they'll be happy to help, and if you talk to drunk swedes they will be very social.

so happy to see you here in our little corner of the world.
I actually started watching u reacting to something Swedish..

i hope the rest of your travels are at least as good as the first days.

There are numerous restaurants in Stockholm that serve traditional Swedish food. It's not like it's ONLY a tourist city :D You just need to find them. Next time you visit, try and find someone who can guide you to those places before you come, especially if you have limited time to visit.

    • @frida507
      @frida507 8 дней назад +4

Yes, and the Old Town is the most touristy place. Last time I went to a cafe there the Swedish staff replied in English even though I addressed him in Swedish. I guess they get used to all guests being tourists in the summer so it comes automatically.

You should definitely visit Visby next time you're in Sweden. Really preserved old city from medieval era and very beautiful. Alot more chill than stockholm too :)!

Depending on the time of year. I doubt Dar would find it relaxing during the Almedal week or the medieval week. It's also quite pricey. Student towns like Lund or Uppsala are nice. Or Östersund if he wants to go urther north. Perhaps stay a day in Östersund, see the Överhogdal tapestries, and then take the train to Trondheim and a short stop in the little Norwegian town called Hell (meaning "luck" in Norwegian).

Agreed! Visby is defenitely worth a visit! As long as he doesn't visit during Almedalsveckan or Stockholmsveckan :P Medievalweek might me fun thou, if he likes that kind of stuff.

@@anjajosefsson8262 During some of the summer weeks perhaps. But I live and study in Visby, and there are a lot to see, experience and do, especially if you are interested in history. Just some of the islands 92 (still in use) medieval churches is worth a visit, or the picturestones, or all of the beautiful nature and landscape. You don't have to visit during the most busy tourist weeks. Just an example 💁‍♀️

You can avoid a lot of walking in Stockholm by using the subway and busses. It is very affordable and efficient. To get mobile data working you need to enable roaming, not disable it, but it can get expensive depending on your plan.

You dont really have to use subway to travel central stockholm. Walking or using an electric scooter is more than enough. Or a bike if you rather. But I guess if you ahve to be somewhere at X time then subway or a bus is I guess worth it.

The ”excuse me” and stuff is definetly a small town vs. Big city thing. I am from a smaller town in sweden and we are often more social with hello and excuse me and stuff than Stockholm. Stockholm is definetly the most anti-social city here 😂
I think if you come back you should visit gothenburg. It’s more of a city life with a small town vibe ☺️ glad you enjoyed yourself though. Happy you got to have a vacation and leave the us for the first time ☺️

If you ever travel to Sweden again i can recomend checking in Örebro, summertime is a must. Perfect sized city for walking around snd checking out the culture, at the same time your almost in the middle of Sweden with good roads and trainrouts taking you where ever you want :) also close to nature, people living there usually takes the bike just 30 min out from town and you gave good spots for swimming, camping and so on, making use of the "Allemansrätter" :)

In the very early 1990's I was flying from the US to Sweden on business. My flight to JFK was delayed and I was concerned I would miss my final flight. I notified the cabin crew, who said "I'll tell the captain". Once we had landed at JFK, they announced that "we have a passenger who have to get to his connecting flight as soon as possible, which is waiting for him. We'll arrive at gate XXX and his connecting flight is at gate YYY (which was the next gate). We ask all passengers to sit down and allow this passenger to disembark the flight first."
That passenger was me. As soon as the fasten seatbelt lights came off, I got my carry-on and ran through the plane and the corridor and to the next gate. They closed the doors behind me as soon as I was onboard.
By magic, my checked baggage also got it onto the next flight. I realised the pilots must have had a serious talk with JFK before arrival. The gate we arrived at was for international flights. The remaining passengers were apparently bus'ed to the domestic part as we arrived at the international part of the airport. The airline was AA.
I don't think they would ever do this today.

You can find traditional Swedish food in Stockholm.. More so than in the smaller cities.. In the smaller cities.. They'll have a pizza restaurant.. Or a burger grill.. A sushi spot.. And many small Thai shacks..(a lot of older married Swedish men have a late life crisis, divorce and then travel to Thailand and they'll marry a new younger Thai wife that they bring back home. These women open small thai food places when they come to Sweden.) And then nothing more.. In Stockholm you have at least the old restaurants that have been around since the 1800's. Still serving original cuisine. In smaller towns they might have small lunch restaurants that serve "husmanskost" during weekdays. (Traditional Swedish food) But they are rarely open for dinner and weekends.

I have visited several large cities in the US, and my experience has been that they often feel quite empty, with few people on the streets. European city centers tend to be more bustling with activity and people. This is likely why you feel that Stockholm is similar to New York, as New York is one of the few US cities with that kind of atmosphere.

  • @Ikaelgo

The first time you travel to a big city you will always be a bit ”dazed”. There are many, many, small and lovely places in Stockholm. An d I would guess it’s, generally, easier to find restaurants with traditional Swedish food in Stockholm, compared to small places (where the only restaurant might be a pizza place). Btw Stockholm is tiny and quiet compared to e.g. London.☺️ But it’s nice to hear that you enjoyed it. And that you made it all the way to Sweden, on your first trip abroad. Excellent!👏Safe journey back!🛫

If u ever come to Scandinavia again brother, i recomend u going to a smaller city than copenhagen or stockholm. those 2 citys wont give scandinavia a proper picture. im swedish atleast, there is alot of places worth visiting outside of stockholm. the north of sweden is a good place to visit, ppl are very friendly there. shit like the "ice hotel" during the winter and early spring is dope to visit. u also get a big chance of seing the northern lights up there. I been following u for a while now, i love that u have some passion for us in scandinavia.

Your flight experience matches one I had back in April 2001, on a flight from Sydney to Stockholm. My flight from Sydney to Paris got delayed so I had to run like hell through all of the HUGE Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris to catch my flight to Stockholm. I was 28 years old and I don't think anyone older than 30 made that connection. Lesson learned: always make sure you have many hours between your connecting flights, it's better to wait 3-4 hours in some random airport than missing a connection!

You should go to west coast next time and land in Gothenburg! And move north the west coast and visit Lysekil, Smögen, Kungshamn, Grebbestad and Strömstad all small to mid size towns. West coast is amazingly beautiful during spring/summer time ❤️. And people are more relaxed and chil 🤪.

A 3 day pass on the public transport is well worth it in Stockholm. There's nice places to go with the public transport, like Sigtuna about an hour north of Stockholm by public transport. It's the old capital of Sweden, Stockholm only became capital after Sigtuna was pillaged by baltic raiders in 1187 and the land rise made it impractical for trade. It's a small town, but there's a lot to see there, there are 35 runestones (most of them in the city) and a lot of churches from the 12th and 13th century.
Vaxholm is another nice place to go with PT in Stockholm, a small town in the archipelago northeast of Stockholm. Nice to just walk around, have an ice cream at the harbour cafés and tour the fortress they've got there.
As someone else said, Visby can't be praised enough. More of a two or three-day trip though, it's a 4 hour boatride from Nynäshamn (a port town south of stockholm, you can take public transport to Nynäshamn though) so maybe not something you do just over one day.

Thanks, those were the personal experiences I missed in what you posted earlier. You do a lot of walking in Stockholm and definitely as a tourist even if you take the subway, but we didn't think you would only walk. You would probably have gotten more out of the trip if you had taken some means of transport and had a company. Either someone who followed you, or if you met one of your subscribers. Dream team Neal and Dar goes to Visby next time? 😉
Nice that you had a good time in any case and that we didn't scare you away! Looking forward to more stories.

Too much time spent walking, Yes that was my exact thought, as tourist you can be so efficient with the time. I know a million things to see and visit in Stockholm.
Tram for example would take a few min directly to Vasamuseum from central.
      transit is cheap.
Subway also covers city well and stops in gamla stan. But maybe he'll try it on his next visit.😊

Walking is a great way to get a sort of more "immersive experience" of the city you visit.
When I was younger and traveled more I and my friends used to just pack a backpack with some sandwiches and water and basic necessities, some pocket change for a few cold beer stops and just wander around for an entire day.
Barcelona for example is a great city for just walking around in with no real aim and just seeing where you end up...

I wish someone would have told/taught you how to buy and use the public transports. I have only been to Stockholm twice in the past 15 or so years so I am not an expert but I used some kind of 3 day ticket that worked all over the city and the boats as well. It's beautiful to walk around of course and you see a lot more but it takes a lot of time.

If you go back, you should try the west coast. yes I'm biased cus I live here. But Gothenburg and the smaller towns and islands around Gothenburg is really nice, at least during summer. Not as much tourists as Stockholm, mostly swedish tourists who go on a daytrip or to camping sites. Winter is shitty here tho, winter is probably best experienced in the north where they actually have a lot of beautiful snow and northern lights and shit. The further south you go during winter the less it becomes a winterwonderland and more a gray slushy depressing shit.

If you want the more traditional food its easier to find if you look for lunch places that serve "husmanskost" which basically means traditional everyday ordinary food lol such as meatballs. I personally find it funny when non Nordic people rave about meatballs talking about them as something special, & sure they are tasty but when you grow up with it as a basic food stable in your home, eating it like once a week, not to mention the meatballs for almost every holiday feast, it gets kinda boring lol

I'm not exactly surprised that you struggled with public transport and ticketing. And bicycle lanes for that matter.
Ørestad, where you're recording is very modern and good looking, but it's far from midtown and you don't really get the same kind of city life out there.
And yeah... the bright nights in the nordics are known to drive people mad when they're not used to it 😋 made me think of the movie Insomnia.
