Do u know what happened the day he died? His song Edmond Fitz which was true included the line "In the maritime sailors cathedral" is real place even today. Once a year the descendants of those sailors journey down and ring that bell. The day this man died, they walked down again and rang that bell for him.

This is one of my favorite songs and one of my favorite artists. The late Mr. Lightfoot wrote it to his wife that he was getting a divorce from and trying to explain why. He had fallen out of love with her and wanted to end the marriage. Sundown was a story about the woman he was seeing after his divorce who he couldn’t trust. It’s a great song even without the backstory. His most famous song was The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald a sad but wonderful song. Unfortunately, Mr. Lightfoot passed away on May 1, 2023.

As a 80's kid, loves metal, goth, industrial, punk, I freakin love this song! took my wife to see Gordon a few years ago, and so glad I had a chance to see this genius live. RIP Gordon, you were amazing, and this song is so so powerful and great

The Woman that broke his heart brought out the best in Gordan's music. His pain had shown brightly in his lyrics. He was a wonderful writer and human being. Try Gordan's "Railroad Trilogy".
Gordon Lightfoot was the premier storyteller/songwriter/singer of my generation and is a true national treasure in Canada. Do take the chance to listen to more of his music. It's a wonderful adventure.
Harry Chapin called his songs "Story Songs" as they all told stories. The most famous were "Cat's in the Cradle" and "Taxi"
Lightfoot's Canadian and this is the song that enabled him to break into the American market only when a Seattle dj discovered it on an album, started playing it and his audience really loved it. The single had never been pushed and the album had mostly been ignored on store record shelves.

Lightfoot broke into US market when Peter Paul and Mary recorded his brilliant "Early Morning Rain" in the late 60s as far as I'm concerned. I admire his lyrics as much as his singing.

Your friend did you a nice favor recommending this. I grew up on this music, and Lightfoot was a legend in his own right. It was okay for us to have ballads and story songs back then. No corporation was controlling the artistic process. You or your manager pitched your songs to radio DJs. Back when people listened to radio, if the response was good, they played your music more often. The audience decided what was best, not a suit in an office in some city far away.

Gordon Lightfoot was an amazing singer songwriter, this song as well as Sundown and The Wreak of the Edmund Fitzgerald are among the greatest classics of all time, he could brilliantly tell stories in a beautiful and melodic way.

Someone else probably mentioned it already but his daughter, who was about 12 at the time, helped him write this, and managed to make the song far less impact full and less mean.

The arrangement is absolutely beautiful. He wrote this song when he left his wife for what was essentially a drug pusher/groupie/monster. The same woman who gave John Belushi his fatal drug overdose. The song is beautiful, though.

As a Gen Xer myself, I remember loving this song since I was a kid, playing the heavily scratched single on our record player. My older siblings had played it to death, and yet I still loved what remained.
Definitely check out his Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. He is a master storyteller, and while Sundown went to #1, WEF is his most famous song - and rightly so. One of the most haunting songs ever.

It's a very sad song and a very beautiful song. Gordon was a bit special. And his lyrics are stunning.
Check out Gordon Lightfoot's Canadian Railroad Trilogy, commissioned by the Canadian government for Canada's 100th birthday in 1967. It's not new, but is one of Lightfoot's best.

My guilty pleasure is (Do) The Hucklebuck by Coast to Coast. The first single I bought as a 10yr old. The fast pace matched my youthful energy, and I liked to sing along! It reached no. 5 in the UK singles chart in 1981.

I truly hope you will listen to Gordon Lightfoot’s The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (be sure to use the lyric video) which is arguably his greatest hit. Gordon was an incredible songwriter/storyteller and any of songs are worth a listen. I was a teenager/young adult when he was at the peak of his career and his music always touched me.
You want to hear a good story telling song listen to Juan Gabriel in Spanish with subtitles song called AMOR ETERNO. I doubt you'll listen to it anyways.

They have a bit of an overwhelming discography, which I am still working through myself. From their low-fi period I highly recommend All Hail West Texas as a whole album. As for more polished albums I would recommend either The Sunset Tree, or Tallahassee.
