😂😂, I can only imagine the PTSD your back was going through, my condolences. I haaaaaaaaate scrapers. Can’t speak for anything past 35 yet, but even this is too old, haha. When I’m telling my friends and family about scrapers, I tell them how the only cool part of operating them, is bragging about it to your friends and family. They move a fascinating amount of dirt, but to me they’re fun for like 5 rounds at most. Fortunately I’ve been getting to hop around different equipment instead, but I have to fully agree, not once would I have rather been in a scraper. Luckily it’s been less and less, and it’s just a few days here and there now, with the occasional gravy job like disking fields. Im with you on the finish work and don’t mind the paddle wheels either. Couple weeks ago got a couple days in a 627k with only 14 hours on it, and that was a pretty killer. Didn’t last though, they had me back in a 637D this week, which was older than I am, lol. What a dog! Plus it 2 mile haul, and I’d say 90% of our road was pumping hard! My back and I are super glad that job is getting an inch of rain today 😂.
@7b7decker7 I ran a 637 for 2 years consistent, then moved up. Had alot more here and there days, fill in and what not. It's a good place to start. If you aren't out of the seat in 2-4 years you will be there until you can't walk. The dozer is a nice place to be. If you get a shot, move on to grade checker if you can read plans. Then it's foreman. After that I quit, got my own license and now do my own thing. Never looked back. I don't regret any of it but I don't ever want to go back. Good luck with your future and keep moving that dirt. There is alot of money to be made in the dirt

My Dad use to drive the Big 657/657B Motorscrapers in his youth on the various Motorway🛣 jobs in the UK and always remember him telling me years ago about how he'd operate them as you were there with one foot on both peddles and him also saying about having to be extra careful with regards to the back engine as if you weren't careful you would end up jacknifing the scraper if you put too much juice on the rear motor! He also said when you had a cushion hitch it made all the difference! Never operated scrapers myself but sat up in the cabs of 637's & 657B's along time ago and looked out back into the boxes and imagined what could be, those boxes just seemed go on forever! I hope all goes well for you! Scrapers get pretty gnarly sometimes, but they can be pretty fun too. Crazy machines. If it gets stressful and seems like a lot at first, just stick with it, it’ll get easier with time. You’ll find what works for you, especially if you get good partners that are willing to share some tips🤘🏼🤘🏼.

Yea, I actually kinda prefer open cab equipment. The windows just make it harder to see. Cabs are sweet if you actually get a rig with working AC, otherwise it’s like another 10 the outside temperature, it sucks.

They have a D7 leveling with a 613c following it to scape up. So my first question is in what situation would you use this paddle wheel scraped instead of a regular one?
Haha, I’ll do what I can for answers. So the paddle wheels are usually used for finishing work, since its less about”move that mountain” and more of sweeping the last of the unnecessary dirt up and making it perfect. With the paddle allowing it to self load, you save on equipment cost as well as diesel. Technically you can still load a double engine scraper with the right finesse, but it will take longer, just as a paddle wheel would be in a double engine’s shoes moving big dirt.
Solid advice! Although this video doesn’t reflect it, I generally do wear them when it’s applicable. Used to use the foamies, but have since upgraded to noise canceling buds. 🤘🏼
Where in California are you? I see your riding videos all over the places I used to ride when growing up. I got out of cali and made it up to Idaho. Found you from your equipment vids. Im a main line digger operator here in the treasure valley.
Unfortunately I just have the one camera. I wanted to put it on a couple spots on the rig, but with the nature of push/pull scraping, I wasn’t going to be able to set it up to record without needlessly stopping production a bunch of times. I was just able to grab this footage while I was on the go. Hopefully I can figure something out for the next scraper job I’m on. 🤘🏼
I’m some cases, probably most, yea. We did split off once in a while to cut in a couple corners that day, but there wouldn’t have been any benefit to doing it every round in this case. My partner would for sure have had to stop and wait for me before the next cut because there’s no way I wouldn’t get left if I were solo cutting that clay, even though it was a 57 vs. 51. Imagine how unstoked the boss would be if they see that scraper separated from their partner and then waiting lap after lap.. Unhooking would have increased my chances of getting stuck and stopping production. It was super slick and soft clay, so it ate any momentum you found, unlike normal dirt. As soon as your cutting edge was more than .2’ in earth, it was a dog fight, solo. If it was a longer cut we could have just skimmed it, but we didn’t really have the distance to get full loads that way. So even if it was just a 51 pulling, we needed all the help we could get. The entire rest of the job, we were teams of 57s, and the 51s were gettin dozer loaded like normal. It was just my luck I had brought my camera on a day that my partner’s rig was down, but luckily they opted to hop in a 51 over both of us going home. Took what I could get..
The scrapper operators should keep their own haul road smooth. I used to keep my ejection out, apron up and bowl down. Yall bouncing around for no reason.
Man, for a second I thought you were giving your 2 cents based on just watching the video, but no one would do that and expect to be taken seriously, right? You were out there. 😂 Seriously though, I don’t disagree with your theory, unfortunately that only works on conditions that aren’t saturated clay before the bottom line falls out. Believe me, we tried, and after one round it would just blow up again. With big dirt, the developers are paying based on yardage, and scraPers are the ones actually moving that yardage, the rest is just support to increase load counts. So if scraPers waste ALL day dragging out roads and not pulling loads, they don’t make the money, and the bosses are pissed. That’s usually when they bring in a blade; long or messy hauls. It’s cheaper to pay one blade than slow down 6+ scraPers to smooth their own road continuously. I wouldn’t let my back go to waste in the name their money, but when you could easily be replaced by the next guy, you shut up and just get it done. So there actually were reasons oddly enough.
😂 31 years of moving dirt and I’ve never had my scrapers bouncing around like that. You have 6 scrapers there. They can smooth the haul road faster than the grader! Sometimes you have to sacrifice a little to go faster. It will all work out in the end. And as a boss I would never have my workers thinking about not doing something they think is good or be replaced. Dude you need to leave. I used to work for Kiewit. You should go there where you can grow. I see you know what you’re doing. I think you’re at the wrong company.

I started out on a terex ts14 ,pedestal seat no air controls . It was a pleasure to move onto a CAT 631 with a cushion hitch
